Round-up for week ending Sunday September 30

The 2007 season of Lincolnshire Doubles League tennis action was completed at the weekend. And there was a notable success as Boston ladies’ first team regained the league championship. Despite a 4-5 loss against St James early on in the season, the ladies won the remaining fixtures to carry off the trophy. Elsewhere, the ladies’ fifth team finished top of Division 3B with six wins out of seven. The ladies’ third team is in second place in Division Two.

In the last match of the year in the Lincolnshire League for a Boston team the men’s first team finished the season with a 7-2 win against Grantham. The team of Andrew Cook, Kevin Hawkesworth, Simon Bush, Ray Frankish, Mike Burnnett and Louis Warren put in a solid performance to round off a fairly steady season. Both the first and second teams hold mid-place in Division One. David Lloyd, Burton Waters won the championship for 2007. In Division Two of the Lincolnshire Doubles League, the third and fourth teams hold mid-table positions and the fifth team finished in third place in Division 3B.

The Boston and District Winter League will begin on Sunday morning October 7. Defending champions Boston C play away at Billinghay, while Boston A are at home to Horncastle. Boston B travel to Louth and Boston D are away at Woodhall Spa.

The Lincolnshire Veterans League, which also run through the winter months, will begin next week. Mini-tennis tournaments were held on the indoor courts at the weekend.

Boston Tennis Club members Myles Bero, Thomas Cozens, Joe Fisher, Sam Fisher, Nitin Joachim, Toby McDonnell-Woods Jack Timby and Sophie Walsh all took part in a mini-tennis orange tournament on Saturday afternoon. This discipline is played on a court that is shorter and narrower than a full-sized court and is suitable for younger children. The competition was good with some fine performances throughout the afternoon.

On Sunday a mini-tennis green tournament took centre stage. For older children, mini-tennis green is played on a full-sized court with faster balls. Boston Tennis Club members Samuel Felipes, Lucy Garrett, Emma Mastin and Victoria Needham were all competitors. Emma had three wins out of four, while Samuel was the winner of his group of six players.

The Bombay Brasserie Winter Singles Leagues (main, daytime and junior) will begin in October. But for players who are not entered at the outset there is plenty of opportunity to take part at a later date.

Round-up for week ending Sunday September 2

The 81st Lincolnshire Junior County Closed Tennis Championships took place at Boston Tennis Club. the number of matches played was nearly half as many again as in 2006 in what is proving to be a popular and ever-expanding championship. The good weather over the week-long tournament was also a welcome bonus.

Saturday was the day that the finals were played and Boston players featured in many of them. And it turned out to be a good for the host club. James Povah and Samantha Vickers won the under-18 boys’ and girls’ singles titles. James has his name engraved on this trophy for the first time, while Samantha capably defended the title she won last year. Samantha also successfully defended the under-16 title, while William Mason won the boys’ title for the first time. William faced Michael Suleau from the north of the county in the final and won in two sets after losing out to the same player the previous day in the semi-finals of the under-18 event in three sets.

In the under-18 boys’ doubles, James Povah and William Mason teamed up to win this title also beating Michael Suleau and Lincoln's Nick Roberts in three sets. In the girls’ under-18 doubles, Samantha Vickers and Kathie Dawson were the runners up to Lincoln's Danielle Smith and Hannah Hume.

In the under-14s age group, Ashleigh Frankish reached the final of the girls overcoming Kathie Dawson in the semi final. Ashleigh was the runner-up to Lincoln’s Danielle Smith.

In the younger age groups, Boston Tennis Club members Elizabeth Hall and Lewis Fisher won the under-12 girls’ and boys’ titles. Elizabeth had a tough semi-final match on the way to the final against Boston's Emily Hawkesworth. Elizabeth booked her place in the final after winning the last two sets of the match having dropped the first in a close tie-break third set. In the final opposition was from Jemma Cardy, of Grimsby, but Elizabeth played well to win 6-3, 6-4.

Elizabeth and Emily then moved around to the same side of the net to win the under-14 girls’ doubles final. For Lewis Fisher, at number one seed, the pressure was on. In the run-up to the final he kept his nerve to win two three-setters including an incredibly tight match against Robert Clark, from Lincoln Eastgate Club. Lewis played fellow club member Peter Watson in the final. Peter also kept his nerve to reach this stage of the proceedings coming through some tough matches. Lewis won the final 6-3, 7-5.

In the under-10 boys singles it was again two Boston Tennis Club members in the final. Andrew Isaac and Joe Woolley both won their semi-finals in three sets to reach the final where the latter produced a competent performance to take his first title in this championship 6-3, 6-3. Jessica Frankish also reached her first county final in this age group. With one year left in this age group Jessica just lost out to the experienced Katy Darke, of Tennis Buddies.

The British Tour event takes place this week in the Indoor Centre at Boston Tennis Club. For youngsters this provides an excellent opportunity to see the standard of play to which they aspire.
