third week and yet again fine conditions on a warm October morning provided
the backdrop to some fine action. In the Boston and District Winter League the Boston E
team played against the Boston A team. Playing for Boston E team for the
first time were Liz Hewitt and Andrea Jackson, who played alongside Rod Horne
and Peter Elphick. The team went on to win losing only one set. The Boston A

rose to the challenge to narrowly win 5-3. Players have been making the most of the school break to
compete in tournaments in the area. Several youngsters from Boston Tennis
Club took part in the annual junior tournament held at Grimsby’s St James
Tennis Club. Kathie Dawson was the winner of the girls under-12 event. At the
semi-final stage Kathie beat fellow club player Elizabeth Hall. In the final
she overcame a local player in three sets. Will Mason was the winner of the
boys under-16 competition also beating a player from St James, Grimsby in
three sets. He was also half of the duo that won the under-14 boys doubles
alongside Lincoln’s Leo Madden. Lewis Fisher was the runner-up in the boys
under-10 event and James Niedermeier finished in third place. Elizabeth Hall
also finished in third place in the under-10 girls. Andrea Jackson played in and won the Watchorn
(Derbyshire) Open. Some good results for Andrea as she out played older
players from both Derbyshire and Cheshire. Both Andrea and Ashleigh Frankish
played in matchplay tournaments at Nottingham where both girls won some and
lost some matches. The ladies veterans’ second team gained the team’s first
win of the season. Away to Spilsby the team of Annette Jakeman, Denise
Priestley, Tricia Sweeney and Sandra White lost out only one set to win 7-1.

Annette Jakeman and Denise Priestley, Catherine Ellis and Helen Cook. The veteran men had a convincing win against Ruston
Marconi. The team on this occasion was Sev Smura, Peter Elphick, Colin Tuffs
and Richard Tupper. |

Lincolnshire Veterans’ Tennis League the Boston men’s team played their third
match of the season. With
one win and one losing draw in the league to date the men travelled in to the
Wolds to the picturesque setting that is Tealby. After the first round all
was level on sets and the total of games. After
the second round surprisingly nothing had altered for the team of John
Gibson, Brian Pycock, Sev Smura and Richard Walker. With the score in sets
still equal the total of games remaining the same for each team the result
was a complete draw. The
veteran ladies managed a 6-2 result against Grantham. Appearing in her first
match for Boston for the first time in a good number of years Sue Beesley
played her part convincingly to take the team towards this good result.
Tricia Sweeney in her first match for this team also put in a good
performance alongside her partner Rachel Atkinson. On the
junior scene the youngsters had another two matches in the Lincolnshire Mini
Tennis Leagues. The turn of the boys’ orange team — Billy Hodgkiss, Joe
Woolley, Zach McDonnell-Woods, And Lewis Wyatt had a good win against
Skegness in a league match and also against Tennis Buddies. The
sixteen counties event that is played at Corby over the winter months started
last weekend. It was
the turn of the under-10s to begin the event that incorporates five age
groups from under-10s, the youngest age group, up to under-18s. Lincolnshire
find themselves this year in a division alongside Hertfordshire, Warwickshire
and Buckinghamshire. Boston had two players in the team representing
Lincolnshire — Emily Hawkesworth and Madeline Verdegaal. The girls overall
finished in third place. The

News for week ending Sunday October 16 In the first week of the Winter League, Boston Tennis
Club’s A team were away at Woodhall Spa. And the fixture resulted in a 2-2 draw. Playing for
Boston’s A team was Will Mason, a regular player last season, and recent
additions to the team. He teamed up with
Asa Elkington, Louis Warren and Nathan Cook. At 2-2 the games won were
counted and Woodhall had the edge by 38 games to 33 games. On Sunday morning Winter League action had Boston C team
up against Rochford. Danielle Frankish, Helen Cook, Rachel Atkinson and
Rachel Brooks held Rochford to a 2 all. However the countback on games was 42
to 38 in Rochford’s favour. Boston D were the only Boston team to reap the full
three points in the first match of the Winter League when Brian Pycock, Chris
Cook, James Priestley and John Gibson had a 4-0 result against Horncastle The
Boston B team lost out in their first match by 1½-2½ when the team of David
Makins, Geoff Short, Mike Sweeney and Sev Smura failed to make an impression
on Billinghay. However, in a reversal of fortunes Boston B had the
upper hand when the team met the Boston D team this week. Ray Frankish,
Michael Sweeney, Simon Walker and Michael Audus lost only one set throughout
the morning. Playing for Boston D team were Chris Cook, Brian Pycock, Matthew
Gibson and James Priestley. The men’s veteran team had a good win against Grantham.
Playing for Boston were John Gibson, Colin Tuffs, Chris Cook and Peter
Elphick. After the first round the result was balanced with one rubber won
and one lost. In the second round both of Boston’s pairs had a win with Peter
Elphick and Chris Cook playing well to beat Grantham’s first pair. This
converted the result in to a 6-2 win for Boston. Young Boston player Andrea Jackson had a successful
tournament recently in the under 14 Ariel County Challenge. This particular
tournament was held at Messingham, near Scunthorpe. Andrea, currently in her
last year at under-12 level, played well to reach the final in this higher
age group. Up against a higher rated opponent from Leicestershire the young Boston
hopeful raised her game to win the final convincingly with the loss of only
two games. This follows a good summer for Andrea in which she
reached the finals of the under-12s and under-14s events at the Jersey Open
tournament. A stronger opponent outplayed Andrea in the final of the
under-14s. And she narrowly lost 5-7, 5-7 in the under-12s final — but
nevertheless it was a good achievement as runner-up. The Lincolnshire Mini Tennis Leagues that got under way last week continued this weekend. There was only one Boston team in action and it was the turn of the boys’ green team. A strong side from Deeping was fielded and they had the edge on the Boston boys. The team of Jamie Adams, Kieran Evans, Henry Warren and Jeremy George-Jones had several three set matches but lost out overall to an on form Deeping team. |
