Round-up for week ending Sunday October 21

Several tournaments have been held at Boston Tennis Club recently for a variety of age groups. An under-11s tournament saw the club’s Joe Woolley lose out to Nottinghamshire's Thomas Wright in a close final 5-4, 5-4. Henry Beesley, another club member, had lost out to Joe at the semi-final stage. In the same tournament, Jessica Frankish met Charley Madigan in the final of the girls under-11s with Charley winning the final on a third set tie-break 12-10.

One age group higher, Joe Woolley again appeared in the final of the under-12s event held at the club this weekend. In a mammoth match against Lincoln’s Robert Clarke, lasting for over two hours, Joe lost out in a third set tie-break 9-11. Also playing in the tournament were Henry Warren, the winner of the consolation event, Andrew Watson, Henry Beesley and Zach McDonnell-Woods. Madeline Verdegaal won the girls’ singles and Charley Madigan was runner-up. Rebecca Beardsley and Jessica Frankish, consolation winner, were also participants.

Stanley Roffe was the winner of an under-16 tournament held last week with Calum McCaig a losing semi- finalist and Lewis Fisher won the consolation. The girls’ winner was Charlotte Harness-Knowles with Amy Khan the runner-up. Other players from Boston Tennis Club taking part were Beth Ridlington and Sarah Isaac.

Meanwhile, Cate Wight had her first tournament win under the membership banner of Boston Tennis Club at the Belfast 2007 wheelchair tennis tournament. Cate, who has only recently taken up tennis, began to receive coaching only 18 months ago under the guidance of club coach Andrew Cook. She has progressed well and has already figured in several tournaments. But her feat in Northern Ireland represented the first overall win of her tennis career. The 2007 Belfast wheelchair tennis tournament was organised by Spokes in Motion, a Belfast support group that encourages participation in sport by wheelchair users. This was the 10th anniversary of the tournament. It was the first time, however, that a ladies singles event had been held and Cate is therefore the first winner of this event. She came through three matches in the group stages and then played the final. The format was a pro-set, which she won 8-3, a score not reflecting how close the final actually was. The next competition for Cate will be the Nottingham Indoor Wheelchair Tournament at the end of October. Boston Community Tennis Partnership supports wheelchair coaching at Boston Tennis Club.

The Boston and District Winter League continued on Sunday morning. There was a close match between Boston C and Rochford, which ended up as a draw, and Boston B had a local derby against Boston D team. Boston C team was Ron Howles, Rachel Brook, Shane Gray and Joan Beale. At 2-2 the result went to Rochford on the countback of games with Boston winning 33 games to the 37 won by Rochford. The Boston B team of Simon Walker, Ray Frankish, Geoff Short and Mike Sweeney had a 4-0 result against Boston D team comprising Chris Cook, Brian Pycock, Richard Tupper and Mikey Housby.

The ladies’ second veteran team lost out to St James’ second team. It was an away fixture at Grimsby for the team of Sue Dring, Catherine Ellis, Helen Cook and Tricia Sweeney. Just missing out on one set to force a draw, the team’s result was 3-5.
