Boston Tennis Club enjoyed some fine results in the Lincolnshire Veterans’ League. The men have had two wins while the women also won their most recent match.

The Boston men’s team of John Gibson, Chris Cook, Mike Burnett and Clive Green won 8-0 away to Lincoln’s Ruston Marconi. Then, with a line-up of Burnett, Colin Tuffs, Green and Richard Walker Boston enjoyed a 6-2 win over Pilgrim Tennis Club. The women reecorded their second victory when Hilary Calvert, Rachel Atkinson, Sue Beesley and Mary Smura won 6-2 away to Grimsby Tennis Club.

Boston B enjoyed a decisive 4-0 win over Spilsby, the victorious squad comprising Ray Frankish, Simon Walker, Mike Sweeney and Richard Cook.

The Lincolnshire Veterans’ Tennis League swung into action at the weekend. Boston Tennis Club had representations in several sections.

The ladies team tackled a home fixture against Tealby. A close tussle ensued but Boston held on to the lead they established in the first round to register an overall 5-3 success. The team comprised Sue Beesley, Hilary Calvert, Mary Smura and Jenny McGarel.

The ladies second team were on their travels in an away fixture against St James. Against tough opponents, the team of Helen Cook, Sue Dring, Tricia Sweeney and Lesley Wright suffered a defeat.

Boston men travelled to face Tealby with a side comprising Paul Conyers, John Gibson, Chris Cook and Sev Smura. The overall outcome, though, was defeat.

Boston’s junior ranks were also involved in a busy action schedule. In action in the under-10s age group were Emily Hawkesworth, Madeline Verdegaal, Henry Beesley, Ryan Welsh and Jonathan Trevor. Emily Hawkesworth had, the previous weekend, triumphed in the Ariel under-11s tournament held at Graves Park where she won three matches on the day. Other under-11s from the boston club tasting action over the weekend were Dominic Beesley, Henry Warren, Andrew Isaac, Ryan Frankish and Joe Wooley.

Elsewhere on the local scene a new season of action in the Boston and District Winter Tennis League, held at the Boston club, has also started.

Boston B defeated Woodhall 4-0 (team Ray Frankish, Micky Audis, Michael Sweeney and Chris Cook).

Boston D lost to Louth (team Mike Housby, Graham Housby, Richard Tupper and Chris Mepham).

Boston C defeated Boston E (C team Ashleigh Frankish, Sripal Kumar, Chris Beale and Joan Beale; E team Louise Linnell, Peter Elphick, Robert Linell and Ailsa Linnell).

The Boston ladies’ second team had a good win in the regional play-offs also involving sides from Leicester and Northampton. Boston reached the event by virtue of winning their county league section in the summer. The success saw them gain promotion to the national Division Two for 2007.

Victory over Leicester Forest East represented a good start for Boston. Northampton Tennis Club also defeated their Leicester rivals. It left the match between Boston and Northampton as the decider. And here Samantha Vickers, Philida Dawson, Catherine Smura and Faye Button won all their singles, each in two straight sets. Victories in the two nominated doubles was also added to contribute to a spectacular 6-0 success.

Long-time leaders of the two singles leagues run at Boston Tennis Club have emerged successful in lifting the respective titles. Jeremy George-Jones has won the summer league crown while the junior summer championship went to Danielle Frankish. The Bombay Brasserie in Boston sponsored both competitions. The overall leading lady is Joan Beale while top boy in the junior ranks was Andrei Clark (second overall) with Chris Beale third.

Finishing points totals in the junior summer singles league were: Danielle Frankish 12, Andrei Clark 9, Chris Beale 9, Ashleigh Frankish 6, Louis Warren 6, Carl Robinson 5, Andrea Jackson 4, Callum McCaig 4, Kathie Dawson 4.

In the overall summer singles league, Tricia Sweeney and Phil Cosgriff took runners-up honours in groups one and two while Rod Horne attained the most improved player status. The most consistent player not occupying a prize-winning place was Ros Keane with Steve Parker second.

All thoughts now switch to the winter league singles competitions being run at Boston Tennis Club — again the three divisions being back by the Bombay Brasserie. The top section has a competitive look to it, notably with the likes of Will Mason, Andrew Cook, Callum Simmons and Mike Bennett all involved.

Leading lights in section two include Henry Cheer, Geoff Short, Phil Cosgriff and Ray Frankish while some of the juniors from the summer competitions including Danielle Frankish and Andrei Clark, have decided to step up and compete in group two of the main winter contest.

Meanwhile, action in the Lincolnshire Veterans’ League and the Boston and District Winter League start this weekend (October 7 and 8) for club doubles players. Boston A entertain Spilsby, Boston D are at home to Louth and Boston’s E and C teams meet. Boston B visit Woodhall Spa.
