News for week ending Sunday November 27 Last
weekend play went ahead in the Boston and District Winter League. This was
good news for players after the difficult weather conditions of last weekend
when the sharp frost affected outdoor play badly. In the
Winter League Boston A had a 4-0 win over Boston C team. Callum Simmons,
Charles Cottrell, Will Mason and David Neal proved too strong a combination
for the C team’s Danielle Frankish, Rachel Brook, Helen Motson And Doug Motson. The
Boston B team had a 5 –3 result against Rochford. Sev Smura, Simon Walker,
Ray Frankish and Chris Sweeney narrowly managed to salvage full points from a
near draw situation. Boston
D team was out gunned by Spilsby and managed to win only one set in the
match. The team on Sunday morning was John Gibson, Chris Cook, Chris Mepham
and Graham Housby. Also on a good note the Lincolnshire Mini Tennis League
produced a strong win for the Boston girls’ mini tennis orange team. Rebecca
Beardsley, Jessica Frankish, Hannah Macleod and Pippa Wilson won all their
matches against Tennis Buddies. Boston
boys’ mini tennis green team was also operating in fine style. This is the
older age group for mini tennis and Boston boys played two matches against
Grantham and Eastgate. It was a good 8-1 win against Grantham for the team of
Kieran Evans, Jamie Adams, Courtney George-Jones and Joe Woolley. Later in
the afternoon Jason Wade, Kieran Evans, Jamie Adams and Courtney George-Jones
drew against Eastgate. In the
Lincolnshire Veterans’ Tennis League all three of the Boston teams had
matches over the weekend. The reults turned out to be a mixed bag. It was
a difficult weekend for both of the veteran first teams. The ladies had a
tough fixture against Eastgate – the league champions for a number of years. Away at Eastgate the team consisted of Hilary Calvert,
Rachel Atkinson, Helen Cook and Liz Hewitt. A good effort by the Boston team
pushed several of the sets quite close. However the effort gained no rewards
in a final score, a convincing 8-0 to
Eastgate. The men
forced a closer result against their opposition but the team was disappointed
not to force a draw. John Gibson, Colin Tuffs, Chris Cook and Sev Smura were
away to Bourne and just failed to pick up a vital set to make it even. The
Ladies second team was a different story. At home to Horncastle the ladies — Sue
Dring, Denise Priestley, Catherine Ellis and Tricia Sweeney had a very
comprehensive 8-0 win. |

News for week ending Sunday November 13 After the previous week's disrupted programme in the
Boston and District Winter Tennis League, last Sunday’s matches went ahead
with all the Boston teams in action. The Boston A team was one of the few
sides to complete their fixture when other teams cried off due to bad
weather. Playing for
Boston A against Spilsby were Michael Emery, David Neal, Will Mason
and Charles Cottrell. An experienced opposition just had the edge on the
youngsters and Boston lost 1-3. This week it was a mixed set of results for Boston
teams. An all Boston clash between Boston D and Boston E team was the closest
outcome of all the matches on Sunday morning. The result was a winning draw
to Boston D team with only one game separating the teams. Boston D team had Bryan Pycock, Chris Cook, James
Priestley and James Shacklock. The Boston E team had playing Matthew Deane,
Geoff Droy, Peter Elphick and Rod Horne. In an intriguing match both rubbers
were halved in the first round and then a rubber being won by each team in
the second round to force the count back on games. On Sunday, Boston A team lost out to Louth 1-3 in a
match that was closer than the scoreline suggests. Callum Simmons, David Neal, Nathan Cook and Charles
Cottrell pushed the opposition hard. The first pair was narrowly denied the
opportunity of winning one rubber and the second pair just lost out in three
hard-fought sets. This result shores up Louth’s position at the top of the
table although it is still too early to predict the winners of this season’s
league and the race is still very much open. Boston B team had a 3-1 win over
Horncastle. Playing for the B team were Simon Walker, Sev Smura, Mike Sweeney
and Chris Sweeney. The ladies veteran teams had matches in the Lincolnshire
Veteran’s League over the weekend. On Saturday the first team was away to
Tealby. Boston trailed 1-3 at the end of the first round but still stood the
chance of forcing a draw. It was a close match for the team of Hilary
Calvert, Rachel Atkinson, Tricia Sweeney and Mary Smura but at the end of the
day it was a 5-3 win for Tealby. On Sunday the second team was also away but at St James,
Grimsby, a match which ended with a 1-7 result for the team of Catherine
Ellis, Tricia Sweeney, Lesley Wright and Chris Paige. |
