Round-up for week ending Sunday May 20
Ladies meet challenge offered by old rivals
Boston Tennis Club’s ladies first and second teams
tackled away matches in their latest action programme in the Kia National
Club League. The firsts travelled to Roundhill in Leicester (old rivals for Boston
at this level of tennis). History of the matches between the two teams shows
an even distribution of wins and losses for both sides.
This season both teams are fighting for a place in the play-offs and the
result gains more significance. The Boston
team of Samantha Vickers, Emma Tomlinson, Sam Green and Danielle Frankish
made the score 2-2 after the singles had been played. The first doubles went
to Roundhill and the second doubles became crucial and inevitably stood
poised at one set all. An agonising third set followed on which the result
rested. Roundhill won this set by a scoreline of 6-4 and the won match 4-2.
With two matches still to be played the dynamics of the league may still
alter and a place in the play-offs remains a possibility.
The ladies’ second team of Catherine Smura, Faye Button, Ashleigh Frankish
and Mary Smura played Manor Park
at Great Malvern. The team are in National Division Two for the first time
ever and are looking for survival in this division. All factors considered
the team faces possible relegation back to the County
Division whereas the opposition
needed to win to gain promotion to the National Division One.
However, Boston Ladies second team gave a good account of themselves.
Although the match stood at 3-1 in favour of Manor
Park after the singles, the
doubles were contested well but the eventual score was 4-2 to the opposition.
Boston men’s first and second
teams of had matches at home in the Kia National Club League. Playing in the
National Division Two, the first team hosted West Bridgford
and the second team (in the County Division One) entertained Bourne.
Both matches were close with the first team needing to call on their reserves
of strength to play a third round of tie-breaks to decide the winner of a
generally even match. The result after the singles and doubles rounds stood
at 3-3 for the team of Andrew Cook, Will Mason, Mike Burnett and Matthew
Deane. Boston narrowly lost out
in the tie-break shoot out.
For the men this follows the previous weekend’s match against David Lloyd, Derby
second team. In that encounter the Boston
team comprised Andrew Cook, Chris Herbert, Mike Burnett and Matthew Deane and
the final result was a 5-1 loss.
The men's second team in the county
Division One of the Kia NCL had a
good 4-2 result against Bourne. The team was Ray Frankish, Simon Bush, Kevin
Hawkesworth and Callum Simmons. This follows a 4-2 loss at the hands of a
strong team from Eastgate in a fixture played previously. On that occasion
Ray Frankish, Simon Bush, Will Mason and Callum Simmons made up the team.
In the Junior National Club League, Boston
boys’ under-12 B team played the C team and won 6-0. Playing for the B team
were Dominic Beesley, Joe Emmerson, Ryan Frankish and Jason Wade, while the C
team was Peter Mitchell, Courtney George-Jones, Kieran Evans Jody McNichol
and Kieran Edmonds. Boston boys C
team had a long and gruelling match against Grantham B. It was 3-3 late in
the evening when Boston won the
shoot out 3-0. There was another good result for the same team against
Grantham C when the boys won 6-0 at Grantham. The B team of Dominic, Joe,
Ryan and Jason won 5-1 when they played Grantham B.
In the Lincolnshire Doubles League, the ladies third team lost 7-2 to Burton
Waters. The Boston team was Helen
Cook, Rachel Atkinson, Sandra White, Ailsa Linnell, Rachel Brook and Sue
Dring. Burton Waters went into a 3-0 lead after the first round. And, despite
winning two rubbers, the Boston
team suffered defeat.
In the Boston and District Mixed
League, Boston Mixed II played Boston Mixed III and won 7-2. Boston Mixed II
had in their team the likes of Mike Burnett, Sue Beesley, Callum Simmons,
Joan Beale, Will Mason and Jenny Grant, while Boston Mixed III fielded Ray
Frankish, Helen Cook, Kevin Hawkesworth, Jane Hindmarch, Mike Sweeney and
Rachel Brook.
