Round-up for week ending Sunday June 24

Men’s second team secure important win

Fixtures were concluded in the Lincolnshire Tennis Doubles League over the weekend of June 23 and 24. In Division One, Boston Tennis Club’s men’s second team gained a 6-3 victory against Grantham. The team comprised Andrew Cook, Peter Elphick, James Povah, Ray Frankish, James Puttrell and Michael Audus. Their efforts earned a second success of the campaign and moved the team towards a more secure standing in the table.

The ladies’ fifth team of Tricia Sweeney, Jane Hindmarch, Jayne Walsh, Rachel Bowser, Helen Motson and Claire Smith had a fine 9-0 whitewash win over Horncastle, a result that followed hot on the heels of a previous 5-4 triumph against Pilgrim Tennis Club when the Boston line-up was Tricia Sweeney, Jane Hindmarch, Emma Cook, Jayne Walsh, Helen Motson and Claire Smith.

In contrast to these successes, there were losses for the other two teams in action last weekend. The men’s fifth team comprising Sam Kemp, Chris Beale, David Makins, Joe Vaughan, Chris Cook and Phil Cosgriff fought hard against a strong Eastgate second team. The score stood at 3-3 after the second round og games and then moved on to 4-4. But the final rubber went to Eastgate who recorded a slender 5-4 win on the day.

The men’s fourth team were up against a strong Gainsborough side and failed to win a rubber. The team of Geoff Short, Jake Brooks, Michael Audus, Louis Warren, Richard Tupper and John Fisher lost out 9-0.

Events in the Boston and District Mixed League have recently been badly affected by rain with many matches postponed or halted after the second round. However, despite pouring rain,  Boston Mixed 1 and Woodhall still played their match in pouring rain. The two weather-swept and drenched sides had close rubbers in the difficult conditions but it was eventually Boston Mixed 1 who emerged 8-1 winners. The Boston team comprised Henry Cheer, Frances Keane, Terry Rollinson, Ashleigh Frankish, Peter Elphick and Sandra White.

Boston Mixed 2 team of Sarah Bennison, Will Mason, Jenny Grant, Barry Overton, Joan Beale and Phil Cosgriff enjoyed a 6-3 win against Bilinghay. Boston Mixed 3 finished 5-1 ahead at Heckington. Playing for Boston 3 were Chris Cook, Helen Motson, Sev Smura, Helen Cook, Ray Frankish and Lucy Fowler.

The Chattertons Club Closed Championships begin next weekend (June 30 and July 1) and culminate in the finals on July 8. Entry to any of the events taking place can be made on the Boston Tennis Club noticeboard.
