Round-up for week ending Sunday July 22

Andrei Clark of Boston Tennis Club will represent Lincolnshire at the national finals of the Road to Wimbledon 2007 competition. The finals of this National 14 and under competition are held on the grass courts of The All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon, from August 20-25. The Road to Wimbledon event continues to grow every year since it began in 2002. The idea is for clubs, tennis centres and schools to support their juniors and organise a Road to Wimbledon tournament to give opportunities for keen juniors to progress to the county finals and then onwards to the national finals. The event comprises three stages and is open to boys and girls of all standards.

Earlier in the year Andrei Clark, Stanley Roffe, Ashleigh Frankish and Kathie Dawson became the winners and the runners-up in Boston Tennis Club’s tournament held for the Road to Wimbledon event. They qualified for the subsequent stage held at the Eastgate Club, where all four won through to the county finals. These were held at Boston on Saturday. Andrei won his semi- final against David Sunter, of Gainsborough, without the loss of a game. Stanley Roffe played Domonic Banks, from Lincoln, in the other semi and took him to a third set tie-breaker that he lost 4-10. The final was between Andrei and Domonic. Andrei, playing extremely well, pulled off a very good win 6-1, 6-3 against the more highly rated player to book himself a place at Wimbledon. Stanley also played well to finish third in the County Tournament when he beat David Sunter in the third/fourth play-off. Ashleigh Frankish breezed through her semi-final but lost out to Lincoln’s Danielle Smith in the final and finished in overall second position. Kathie Dawson played well in her semi-final but lost to Danielle, but went on to finish third in the competition after winning her third-fourth play-off match.

In the Boston and District Mixed League, Boston Mixed II lost 6-3 to Spalding. The team comprised Phil Cosgriff, Jenny Grant, James Puttrell, Sue Beesley, Chris Beale and Annette Jakeman. The Boston III team of Mike Sweeney, Jane Hindmarch, Chris Sweeney, Helen Motson, Louis Warren and Tricia Sweeney had a 7-2 win against Woodhall Spa.

In the Lincolnshire League there were narrow losses for two of the ladies’ teams. The seconds of Jenny McGarel, Sue Beesley, Rachel Atkinson, Faye Button, Catherine Ellis and Mary Smura lost 5-4 to Grantham Tennis Club ladies in a close match. The ladies fourth team also lost out 6-3 to Appleby Frodingham in a tight match. The team on this occasion was Sue Dring, Lyn Capes, Denise Priestley, Kathie Dawson, Andrea Jackson and Annettte Jakeman.

From 2pm to 4pm every Wednesday and Friday afternoon from July 25 until August 10, group tennis coaching will be taking place at Boston Tennis Club as part of the Borough of Boston Sports Tour initiative. For club members the cost is £1 and for non –members it is £2. There are also some attractive deals on membership for participants and their families during these three weeks. The sessions will take place indoors if it is wet.

Round-up for week ending Sunday July 1

Boston Tennis Club members Lewis Fisher, James Niedermeier, Elizabeth Hall and Emily Hawkesworth represented Lincolnshire at under-12 age group last weekend. The boys played at Boston and finished fourth out of six counties. The girls’ team  were at Derby and, although finishing sixth, they only narrowly missed out on a higher placing on a count-back of sets that had been won.

Elsewhere over the weekend, the Lincolnshire Youth Games took place at Grantham Meres Leisure Centre. In the tennis competition Boston finished in third place with South Kesteven being the winners. The team representing the Borough of Boston was Jessica Frankish, Elizabeth Tracey, Alice Tetther, Jonathan Trevor, Henry Beesley and David Cheer. They had some close matches despite having to contend with a strong wind and spells of rain as well as the opposition.

Earlier in the Boston and District Mixed League, Boston Tennis Club first team played their second team. It was a close fought match with the final result a 5-4 in favour of the first team. Simon Bush and Ashleigh Frankish, as first pair, won all three rubbers and the other two pairs of Tom Brooks and Rachel Atkinson, Geoff Short and Ros Keane added one apiece. The second team’s pairs were Mike Burnett and Sue Beesley, Will Mason and Sarah Bennison, James Putrell and Kathie Dawson. There was an 8-1 win for Boston mixed thirds in a match against Spilsby that was actually a much closer than the scoreline suggested. The team was Andrew Cook, Helen Cook, Ray Frankish, Tricia Sweeney, Mike Sweeney and Mary Smura.
