News for week ending Sunday December 31

A touch of spice was brought to the holiday season by the Taste of Bombay Indian Restaurant sponsoring Boston Tennis Club's annual end of year open over-35s mixed doubles tournament.
Snow might have been covering the ground, but there was still to be some heated competition at the indoor centre.

This popular event attracted a good number of couples and the players enjoyed a full day of tennis. Simon Bush and Emma Grant were to end the year with victory as they came through as the tournament winners. The players were mainly but not only Boston Tennis Club members, with a total of 14 couples taking part.  Emma and Simon qualified from the group stages comfortably, dropping only eight games over six matches.  Husband and wife partnership, Tony and Lesley Addy also qualified from the same group.  Strong competition also came from Rachel Bowser and Rod Horne, and Jill Grant and Roy Fox.

Meanwhile, in the other half of the tournament, Helen and Chris Cook qualified as group winners, with four wins despite a four all tie with Rachel Atkinson and David Makins.  Rachel and David themselves finished second in the group and went onto the semi finals, narrowly ahead of Joan Beale and Phil Cosgriff.

The semi final line up saw Bush and Grant FaCing Atkinson and Makins, while the Cooks were drawn against the Addys.  Simon and Emma were in no mood for messing and dropped only one game, whilst Chris and Helen came through 6-2.

The final was Simon and Emma's closest match of the day, but not close enough to upset the odds.  They became the 2005 tournament winners 6-3.  A representative from the Taste of Bombay then presented the prizes, first prize being a meal for four with wine at the restaurant.

It’s still all to play for in this year's Boston and District Winter Tennis League. The competition takes a break from now until January but several of the teams have been involved in re-arranged matches.

There has been some disruption to fixtures through bad weather this season and four of the Boston teams were able to make up lost ground at the weekend. Boston C team played against Boston D team and the match finished in a draw. Boston C team of Andrew Cook, Emma Grant, Tricia Sweeney and Rachel Brook took on the Boston D team of Peter Elphick, Andrew Jackson, Liz Hewitt and Rod Horne. After the first round the score stood even and this carried through to the second round. When games were added they too were level.

Boston A and Boston B managed to complete a re-arranged match on Sunday morning. Boston B, comprising Ray Frankish, Edward Fowler, Simon Walker and Geoff Short, won the match 4-0. However, the score did not reflect the games. Boston A team of Will Mason, Charlie Cottrell, Nathan Cook and Carol Robinson came close at times but ultimately the youngsters were unable to make sufficient inroads against the more experienced team.

News for week ending Sunday December 11

Teams from Boston Tennis Club collected several trophies at the Lincolnshire LTA presentations made at the annual meeting. Juniors collected five out of eight Kia Junior National Club League Trophies for teams that won the county division.

Will Mason was presented with the boys’ under-16 and under-18 JNCL trophies on behalf of the teams. The girls’ teams were successful at under-12, under-14 and under-18 age groups. It was a clean sweep for Boston ladies in the Lincolnshire Doubles League.

Boston Ladies’ team were the winners and the ladies third team won Division Two and the ladies fourth team won Division Three.

For those players inspired by the veteran players at the Masters held at the Royal Albert Hall last week, watch out for the next tournament to be held at Boston Tennis Club. The over-35s open mixed tournament will take place on Wednesday December 28. Details will be posted on the tennis club notice board.

In the singles league run at Boston Tennis Club, Phillida Dawson heads up the leaderboard with five wins and 10 points. She is four points clear of nearest rivals Callum Simmons and Ray Frankish. Will Mason and Geoff Short follow on next with four points each.

This month, group one of the singles league has in it Phillida and Callum with Michael Emery and Ray Frankish promoted from group two to join them. Tom Phoenix heads the junior league’s leaderboard on six points with a group comprising Thomas Emerson, Elizabeth Hall, Lewis Fisher and Calum McCaig close behind on four points.

The girls’ mini-tennis green team had a tough match against Eastgate at the weekend. The team of Astrid Preston, Jessica Frankish, Georgia Hodgkiss and Rebecca Beardsley played well but the opposition had the advantage and Boston lost out 7-2.

In the Boston and District Winter Tennis League, Boston A team won 2½-1½ against Rochford. The team was made up of Will Mason, David Neal, Charlie Cottrell and Michael Emery. With the match standing at 1-1 after the first round, the team played well to win a deciding set in the second round. The Boston B team — Simon Walker, Michael Audus, Edward Fowler and Sev Smura — lost one set to Pilgrim Tennis Club to give the team a good win. Boston C team lost out to Woodhall Spa, winning only one set. The team was Rachel Brooks, Ashleigh Frankish, Sushil Kumar and Patricia Sweeney.

The previous week the Boston D tam, in an extremely close match, had just forced a winning draw against Woodhall Spa by the narrow margin of two games. Peter Elphick, Sarah Patton, Liz Hewitt and Rod Horne had to face the countback on games when the set were level at the end of play. For the E team it was a good result in that the team had picked up the two deciding games along the way.

Boston Tennis Club members figured in both the men’s and the ladies’ senior county teams to take part in this year’s LTA Winter County Cup. Last weekend the Lincolnshire ladies played at Shrewsbury while Lincolnshire men went up north to Glasgow.

The men, made up of a side including Alex Allen, Sam Kemp, James Shacklock, Matthew Wallhead, James White and James Wrisdale, gained wins on the first two days against Cumbria and South of Scotland but lost out 6-3 to the North of Wales on the final day to finish second in the group.

The ladies team of Lucy Fowler, Helen Povah, Catherine Smura, Kelly Thomson, Emma Tomlinson, Samantha Vickers, Laura White and Jade Windley, gained promotion to group five after a successful weekend.

Positive 9-0 results against the Channel Islands and Cumbria on the first two days left the team in a strong position for play on the last day. However, Lincolnshire required a win to be promoted and the opposition was the strongest of the weekend. Added pressure was the fact that the opposition was Shropshire playing with the full support of the home crowd.

The score stood at 3-3 after the singles round and 4-4 after two of the doubles. Before local support had an opportunity to lend weight to the Shropshire campaign a convincing no-nonsense win by the remaining doubles pair of Samantha Vickers and Jade Windley guaranteed that Lincolnshire won the group.
