August 2006

News for week ending Sunday August 13

The number of team poised to line up for the 2006-2007 Boston and District Table Tennis League stands at 21. At one stage, the state of table tennis was looking a touch parlous. But with the difficulties of the past few months now out of the way, things are looking better.

As is now the practice, the executive committee met last week and the proposed structure of the league is as follows:

Division One:

Graves Park A, Graves Park C, Lodgers A, Lodgers B, Lodgers C, Lodgers G, Penmaen A, Shodfriars, Shodfriars B, Stickney A.

Division Two:

Graves Park B, Graves Park D, Graves Park E, Graves Park F, Graves Park G, Lodgers D, Lodgers E, Penmaen B, Shodfriars C, Stickney B, Wrangle.

The closure of the Mayflower Centre was for some, a bitter blow with six or so clubs playing their home matches at this venue. However, this has been sorted out with three clubs relocating to Graves Park while Lodgers and Penmaen have taken one each. The big beneficiaries of this shake-up have been Graves Park who up to a couple or so seasons ago only had two teams. Lodgers have gained one team from Mayflower but promptly saw another of their teams disband, players going their separate ways, either retiring or joining different teams. However, all was not lost as another team came on board to make their number up to six. The only other club to make a gain was Penmaen who took two of last seasons players from Mayflower D and two from William Lovell to form a team.

The fixtures meeting to discuss the proposed divisions will be held at the Graves Park Social Club, Kirton on Thursday August 24 starting at 7.30pm when anyone who has any connection with table tennis is invited to attend. Any comment or appeal regarding the above structure must be made in writing to the general secretary, Roger Hooton, 33 Glen Drive, Boston PE21 7QB at least two days before the above meeting. The league is expected to start at the beginning of October but the exact date will be confirmed at a later date.
