Round-up for October 28 It has been another busy time for squads representing
Boston Swimming Club in regional galas. Fenland League action took the A and B squads to Peterborough
and Thetford respectively but only the consolation crumbs of fourth and fifth
places were harvested as both sides found the going tough. At Peterborough, Boston A were up against Huntingdon,
Grantham, Cambridge and City of Peterborough. Race wins were scarce but Rebecca Craven (girls 10u 50m
breaststroke), Amelia Murfin (girls 12u 50m backstroke) and Laura Swain
(girls 13u 50m butterfly) managed to harvest maximum rewards in an overall
team total of 113 points — 23 ahead of basement side Huntingdon, one behind
third placed Grantham but further adrift of the top two, City of Peterborough
(137) and Cambridge (124) Personal best times were recorded by: Joseph Howe,
Oliver Street (2), Rebecca Craven, Kieran Edmonds, Frazer Overton, Kimberley
Van Haren, Jack Ross (2), Abigail Teague, Elvijs Roberts (2), Amelia Murfin,
Laura Swain, Ben Warren, Charlie Lay, Megan Sargeant, Paige Royce and Michael
Craven. At Thetford, the Boston B team also found life testing
and came fifth on 78 points against opposing teams from Bottisham (104),
Wisbech (110), Saxons (133) and eventual winners Deepings (155). Highlight for Boston, though, was a hat-trick of race
wins for new member Mantas Knisevskis in the boys 11u 50m butterfly, 50m
freestyle and 50m breaststroke. He also achieved three personal best times in gaining
his treble success. Other personal best feats were recorded by: Thomas
Sargeant, Brendan Clark (2), Holly Spinks, George Needham, Rebecca Ryan (2),
Georgia Hodgkiss and Katy McDonnell-Woods. |

Round-up for October 21 Three Boston teams contested the annual staging of the
Geoff Moulder Trophy when hosting opposition from Grantham, Wellingborough
and the Spalding-based South Lincs club while the additional invitation to
Downham to complete a seven-sided gala comprising solely 200m events was not
fulfilled. As things turned out, Boston A went on to clinch overall
victory with 12 race wins contributing to a points tally of 161. This was 11
clear of event-long chief rivals South Lincs who in turn finished 13 points
ahead of Grantham in third. Boston B and C teams battled well (84 and 78 points
respectively) and came within a whisker of matching the fourth placed tally
of 85 that gave Wellingborough fourth place.
Race winners for Boston A were: Girls, Amelia Murfin
(11u breaststroke), Kirsty Overton (9 years breaststroke, backstroke),
Jessica Murfin (13u butterfly), Megan Sargeant (9 years individual medley),
Laura Swain (13u breaststroke); Boys, Ikhuemose Ikhena (11u breaststroke,

placings plus the notable feat of one second place for Oliver Street (boys
11u butterfly). There were also a couple of excellent swims for the C team
with Charlie Lay (boys 9 years freestyle) and Mantas Knisevskis (boys 11u
breaststroke). Personal best times were achieved as follows: Boston A, Megan Sargeant (2), Adam Clark (3), Amelia

Round-up for October 15 A total of 23 members of Boston Swimming Club’s masters section
swimmers took part in the Carol Patch Masters Championship at the Geoff
Moulder Leisure Complex training pool. It was one of the best turnouts for a long time as a
Boston representation. And all met the challenge with great determination. Ian Wells, the club’s head coach, had prepared everyone
for the day with a time trial training session including dives, starts and
turns. Relay teams were entered across all age groups, each one
contributing to the team’s medals haul of 25 golds, 11 silvers and 16 bronzes. Principal rivals Gainsborough were strong throughout.
They finished in pole position with 69 points. Lincoln Vulcans were second
with 68 points while Boston came third on 62 points. Boston’s gold medallists were: Anton Kiss (in the 40-44
years age group) who won the 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke,

Round-up for October 14 Boston Swimming Club’s first foray into Speedo League
action for the new season proved a tough assignment. The squad battled hard in a six-team contest at the
Geoff Moulder Leisure Pool complex but in the end had to settle for fifth
place. However, they can take credit from the fact that they
were only 12 points off second-placed Milton Keynes — and frustratingly only
four adrift of Louth in third spot. Arguably the biggest factor making the telling
difference was the fact that the club’s open age group swimmers couldn’t
quite match the form of all their rivals and had to settle for minor spoils
in most of their events. In the first quarter of the 50-race meet, Boston
struggled early on before clawing back points on their rivals — all the time,
though with Notts Leander pulling into a lead they never relinquished. A clutch of race wins then propelled them into serious
contention for third place, vying neck-and-neck with Louth and Modernians.
And that’s the way things stayed for most of the evening (the three sides
exactly level on 130 points after event 35. But then points became harder to accumulate for the Boston
side en route to their close-call fifth spot finish. Final points: Notts Leander 248, Milton
Keynes 178, Louth 170, Modernians 168, Boston 166, Norwich A 116. Event winners for Boston were as follows: Boys: Patrick Ikhena (13-and-under 100m
breaststroke, 13u 100m butterfly), Ben Pogson (15u 100m backstroke),
Ikhuemose Ikhena (11u 50m butterfly, 11u 50m breaststroke) Zak Lomas (13u
100m backstroke, 13u 100m freestyle) and the 13u 4 x 50m medley relay, 11u 4
x 50m medley relay, 13u 4 x 50m freestyle relay. Girls: Kimberley Van Haren (11u 50m
freestyle), Personal best times were recorded by: Susannah Yielding, Zak Lomas (2), Mark Tebbs, Amelia Murfin, Ikhuemose Ikhena, Sam Wright, Rueben Reed and Patrick Ikhena. |
