Round-up for
October 30
Boston Swimming Club members travelled to Peterborough
to compete for Speedo League points. And it proved to be a difficult evening of action
against King’s Lynn, Norwich A and B teams, Louth and host club City of
Peterborough. As things turned out, it was the first time Boston had
beaten King’s Lynn and Louth in this league. But they made hard work of
achieving third spot as they trailed in sixth place after 18 events. But then Katie Bell secured Boston’s first heat win of
the evening in the girls 10/11 years 50m butterfly to help spark a recovery.
Next Elvijs Roberts finished third in the equivalent boys event to see the
team draw level on points with King’s Lynn and sit five points behind Norwich
B. Heat 22 saw Ben Pogson win the boys 13/U 100m backstroke
to lead King’s Lynn by six points and cut the deficit on Norwich B to only
three points. Ose Ikhena was the next Boston swimmer to win a race when he
touched home first in the boys 10/11 years 50m breaststroke marginally ahead
of his King’s Lynn rival. Two races later brother Patrick finished second in
the boys 13/U 100m butterfly to see Boston draw level with Norwich B, one
ahead of Louth and seven points ahead of King’s Lynn. Mixed fortunes then saw Boston, Louth and Norwich B swap
places several times until a victory for the boys 9/11 years medley relay
team of Ose Ikhena, Joshua Teague, Elvijs Roberts and Frazer Overton finally
saw Boston clear in third place. Final points: Norwich A 249, City of Peterborough 218,
Boston 149, Louth 147, King’s Lynn 135. Elsewhere, a weekend of action at the Ponds Forge
international pool at Sheffield saw Boston swimmers competing in the Sherwood
Colliery annual open meeting. And the Boston male contingent, in particular, enjoyed a
successful weekend as they returned with the award for the top boys team. Ben Pogson must have been the happiest of them all after
landing a six-trophy haul. All were achieved in the 13-year-old category. He
won the 100m backstroke, the 100m freestyle and the 200m individual medley.
He was also third in the 50m freestyle, fourth in the 50m butterfly and fifth
in the 50m breaststroke. George Dix (15 years age group) also returned with six
trophies — securing fourth place in the 50m and 200m backstroke, fifth in the
50m breaststroke, and sixth in the 200m IM, 50m butterfly and 100m
breaststroke. The Ikhena brothers brought home a total of 10 trophies.
In the 10 years age group Ose was second in the 50m and 100m butterfly, third
in the 100m freestyle and 50m breaststroke and fourth in the 200m IM and 50m
freestyle. Meanwhile Patrick, in the 11 years age group, finished second in
the 100m freestyle, fourth in the 100m butterfly and 200m freestyle, and
sixth in the 50m backstroke. Rhys Cox, swimming in the 14 years category, won the 50m
butterfly and 50m backstroke, second in the 50m freestyle, third in the 200m
backstroke, and fifth in the 100m butterfly. Sam Wright won four trophies in
the 13 years age group with a third place in the 200m backstroke, and fourth
place in the 400m freestyle and 50 and 100m breaststroke. There were three trophies each for Nathan Sargeant (second
in the 14 years 50m backstroke, third in the 100m backstroke and sixth in the
200m backstroke) and Henry Careless (fifth in the 10 year old 200m backstroke
and sixth in the 100m backstroke and freestyle events). Zak Lomas won two fourth place awards in the 12 years
50m and 100m backstroke events and Frazer Overton , in the 10 year category,
secured fifth in the 100m freestyle and sixth in the 50m freestyle. And there was one trophy each for Joshua Van Haren
(fifth in the 15 years 400m freestyle), Michael Craven (sixth in 10 years
200m backstroke) and Joseph Howe (fourth in 10 year old 100m breaststroke). For the girls Laura Swain returned with three trophies,
finishing second in the 10 years 50m breaststroke, and third in the 200m IM
and 100m freestyle. Jessica Murfin claimed fourth place in the 12 years 100m
butterfly and younger sister Amelia finished sixth in the 10 years 200m
breaststroke. And Katy Thorn finished sixth in the 14 years 200m
breaststroke. |

Round-up for October 16 The Geoff Moulder Leisure Pool hosted the Anglian Swimming
League final with Boston’s A team competing against Wisbech, City of Norwich
and Peterborough. In the final count-up, the home contingent finished in
runners-up spot. Rebecca Price got Boston’s first heat win of the evening
in heat two, the girls open age group 100m individual medley. But then
eventual winners City of Norwich chalked up eight consecutive heat successes
to see them open up a 13-point lead over Boston after 11 events. Jessica Murfin managed a first place in the girls’ 15/u
100m freestyle in a race that saw the Norwich swimmer disqualified. The 15/u
200m IM events were both won by Boston swimmers – Sam Wright and Leah West,
by which point Boston were trailing Norwich by 12 points. Hollie Featherstone
then went on to win the girls 13/u 100m butterfly and Rhys Cox won the boys
open age group 50m breaststroke but they were still 12 points behind the
leaders. Boston finished the evening with wins in the final two
races. Jemma Tointon winning the girls’ 13/u 100m breaststroke and the relay
team consisting of Katy Thorn, Rhys Cox, Eleanor Reed, Ben Pogson and Rebecca
Price. Final points: City of Norwich122, Boston A 109,
Peterborough 100, Wisbech 91. Meanwhile, on the same night the B final was taking
place at King’s Lynn with Boston B competing against Downham, St. Ives,
Norwich Swans and King’s Lynn. The home side dominated the evening but four
Boston swimmers managed heat wins as the team earned third place in the final
points tally. First of these was Ruth Singleton in the girls’ 15/u
100m butterfly. Conor Murphy was a double winner in the boys’ 13/u 100m
backstroke and breaststroke events. Kayleigh North gained the other heat
success for Boston in the girls’ 13/u 100m butterfly. Final points: Kings Lynn 126, St. Ives 109, Boston 101,
Norwich Swans 72, Downham 52. Boston Swimming Club’s annual meeting will be held on Friday November 11 in the Conference Centre at Pilgrim Hospital in the room next to Social Club, 8pm. All members are welcome. |
