Round-up for November 11

Two teams from Boston Swimming Club contested the annual staging of the Geoff Moulder Memorial Trophy against rival teams from Deepings, Wellingborough, South Lincs and Louth.

The all-200m event gala saw Boston A who finish up as the victorious side on a night that also saw three club records broken.

In heat two, the boys 9 years freestyle, Boston swimmers finished in first and second places when Ben Warren narrowly touched home ahead of namesake Henry — both   boys securing personal best times.

Laura Swain and Patrick Ikhena then won the 11/u breaststroke events with Patrick finishing 25m ahead of the second place swimmer (younger brother Ose) in his race to claim a new club record in the process.

Ben Pogson became the second swimmer to claim a new record when he won the 13/u boys backstroke with Jessica Murfin winning the equivalent girls event. By this stage Boston A had opened up a 10-point lead over second place South Lincs.

Wins then followed for Reuben Reed in the 9 year old boys breaststroke, Ben Warren (9 years backstroke), Elvijs Roberts (11/u butterfly) and Rebecca Price and Ben Pogson in the 13/u freestyle events to extend the lead to 13 points.

Laura Swain broke the 11/u freestyle record in her race, but a couple of disqualifications for A team swimmers saw South Lincs narrow the gap to 10 points.

But Boston A finished the evening in style by winning the final three events – the mixed relays. The 9-year-olds were Ben Warren, Rebecca Craven, Reuben Reed and Madeline Verdegaal. The 11/u team comprised Elvijs Roberts, Katie Bell, Patrick Ikhena and Laura Swain and the 13/u team was made up of Ben Pogson, Jessica Murfin, Sam Wright and Rebecca Price.

The B team’s only heat win came from Henry Warren in the 9 years individual medley. And Ose Ikhena and Oliver Street secured second place in the 11/u and 9 years backstroke respectively.

Final points: Boston A 151, South Lincs 133, Wellingborough 124, Louth 107, Deepings 98, Boston B 83

The final round of Fenland League action has taken place at Peterborough with the home club hosting King’s Lynn, Boston A, City of Cambridge and Grantham.

Due to school half term holidays there were several Boston swimmers not available.  This meant the club’s B team had to withdraw from their final with some of their swimmers being allocated A team places.

But the swimmers who were available did the club proud, achieving 27 personal best times from the 36 events.

Kayleigh North was Boston’s first winner of the evening in heat two when she touched home first in the girls12/u 100m individual medley.

The next Boston winner was Joshua Teague in the boys 11/u 50m butterfly by which time Boston were on 24 points, four behind leaders Peterborough, two behind Grantham and one ahead of Cambridge.

Boston swimmers Ose Ikhena and Laura Swain won both of the 13/u 50m breaststroke events. These successes saw Boston move into second spot.

But Hannah Cox was the only other Boston swimmer who managed a heat win in the girls 13/u 50m butterfly event. It all meant Boston finished the evening in fourth place.

Final points: Grantham 139, Peterborough 134, Cambridge 129, Boston A 118, King’s Lynn 61.
