Round-up for December 18

Tough double challenge for swim team

Boston Swimming Club undertook a home pool double bill of top-level action. But unfortunately the host contingent was unable to make any real impact in the Speedo League fixtures.

First up they entertained counterparts from Northampton, Milton Keynes, Lincoln Vulcans, Biggleswade and King's Lynn and had to settle for fifth place. Subsequently, a meet against City of Norwich, Milton Keynes, Cleethorpes, Sherwood and Lincoln Pentaqua saw Boston come sixth, albeit just four points adrift of the pack.

Boston went into the opening meet on the back of gaining a good third place in the first round at Peterborough.

For the round two home draw, Boston had to negotiate the fixture without three key swimmers which arguably impacted on the team's overall showing, particularly in the latter stages when some competitors had to take part in additional events to cover for the absentees. And what at one point looked like being a creditable fourth placed finish dwindled away as King’s Lynn nipped in by just one point to demote Boston into fifth spot.

Boston opened in moderate form with a trio of fourth places in the opening few events. Their first race success arrived in heat six, the boy' 4x50m medley relay. Sam Wright followed this success in heat 14 in the boys' 13-and-under 100m breaststroke. Heat 22 brought Boston's next race win, this time with Ben Pogson touching home first in the boys' 13-and-under 100m backstroke.

A few more seconds and third places were then harvested as Boston just kept a grip on fourth place. Hopes of remaining there were boosted by two more race wins in heats 37 and 40 for Rebecca Price (girls13-and-under 100m freestyle) and George Dix (boys 15-and-under 100m breaststroke) respectively.

But in the later stages of the meet, Boston were unable to weigh in with sufficient high placings to see off the mounting challenge of King's Lynn who just managed to climb into fourth spot (at Boston’s expense) in the closing stages.

Personal best times were recorded by Kayleigh North, Ben Pogson, George Dix (two), Elvijs Roberts, Jessica Murfin (two), Ruth Singleton, Ose Ikhena, Patrick Ikhena (two) and Rhys Cox.

Boston went into the most recent gala (another home draw) safe in the knowledge that the six points earned from the initial two rounds ensured they would not be embroiled in a relegation scrap. However, it was again a tale of some senior swimmers not being at the selectors' disposal, reasons including absences for being away at various universities and colleges.

Replacements were drafted in and produced several good performances. However, the challenge proved tremendously taxing and the team struggled, particularly in the early heats with only single point returns from 10 of the first 18 Their only victories in the initial stages came from the girls 11-and-under freestyle relay team and the boys 13-and-under medley relay squad. A few second and third places then stabilised the Boston ship, but at the one-third stage they still trailed the pack, detached by 17 points from fifth placed Lincoln Pentaqua.

However, three race wins in four events gave the Boston team renewed hope in the guise of triumphs for Laura Swain (girls 11-and-under 50m breaststroke), Ose Ikhena (boys 11-and-under breaststroke) and Patrick Ikhena (boys 13-and-under butterfly). Later on, Rebecca Price won the girls 13-and-under 100m freestyle, quickly followed by victory for Ben Pogson in the boys’' equivalent.

However, the deficit was still 14 points and all the time Cleethorpes and Milton Keynes were way out in front having a real ding-dong battle for top honours — the former eventually sneaking in by just one-and-a-half points.

Boston signed off the meet with two more notable relay wins for the girls’ 11-and-under relay team and the boys 13-and-under freestyle squad. These results contributed to Boston finishing on 143 points, not quite enough to catch fifth placed Lincoln Pentaqua on 147.

Personal best times were achieved by Hollie Featherstone, Rebecca Price, Sam Wright, Elvijs Roberts, Ben Pogson (two), Patrick Ikhena (two), Joshua Teague and Nathan Sargeant.

Gala one:  Cleethorpes 206, Milton Keynes 204½, City of Norwich 175½, Sherwood, Lincoln Pentaqua 147, Boston 143.

Gala two:  Lincoln Vulcans 264, Biggleswade  190, City of Milton Keynes 181, King’s Lynn   149, Boston  148, Northampton B  112.

Club in trophy follow-up triumph

Triumph came the way of Boston Swimming Club in an annual gala contest. The club travelled to Spalding in a bid to defend the Gerry Gibbons Memorial Trophy. And, after a closely-fought six-team tussle, they emerged triumphant by a slender margin and retained their title in the process. Boston finished with 141 points, two ahead of Deepings and a further two clear of host club South Lincs.

But they had to battle all the way to grab the glory, having been in third place for the majority of the event before piling up enough points late on to land the spoils. It wasn’t until race 11 that Boston gained their first victory, Sadie Haines earning a six-point haul in the girls open 100m freestyle.

Immediately afterwards, Patrick Ikhena won the corresponding boys' race. Brother Ose Ikhena then collected another victory four heats later in the boys 11-and-under butterfly. But even allowing for this, Boston sat 15 points off the pace. However, further wins followed in quick succession for Hollie Featherstone (girls 13-and-under 100m freestyle), Sadie Haines (open girls 100m backstroke), the 9s-to-11s 4x25m medley relay team, Madeline Verdegaal (girls 9-and-under butterfly), William bell (boys 9-and-under 50m butterfly) and Kimberley Van Haren (girls 11-and-under 100m freestyle). These results saw the gap closed on leaders Deepings to just three points to set up a tense conclusion to the gala.

Three second places and another race success for Joshua Teague (boys 11-and-under backstroke) helped to produce a dramatic change in the overall scores. In tandem with a couple of disqualifications, it gave Boston a 10-point lead with five races left. And even though no further race wins were achieved, the Boston squad hung on to enough of a lead to see them through to a successful conclusion.

In addition to the various race wins, there were a clutch of personal best times achieved by Boston swimmers. These went to Darren Priestley, Rebecca Craven, Oliver Street (two), Sadie Haines, Patrick Ikhena, Georgia Hodgkiss, Henry Warren, Ose Ikhena, Hollie Featherstone, Joshua Van Haren, William Bell, Kimberley Van Haren, Joshua Teague, Sam Wright, Abigail Teague and Laura Swain.
