Round-up for May 5-7

Mixed championship fortunes for Ben

The Midland Youth Swimming Championship were held at Coventry’s 50m pool, an event that featured Ben Pogson as Boston Swimming Club’s lone representative.

Ben started the three-day competition in somewhat flat fashion by swimming below his best. In the 200m freestyle he was five seconds off his best time, a standard he achieved earlier in the year. This was supposed to be his warm-up race before his major event, the 100m backstroke. Once again in the heats, Ben was off his best but still managed to qualify for the evening final. He went into the final as fourth fastest 15-year-old and seeded seventh in the double 15 to 16 years age group. Ben swam 1.7 seconds faster in the final, managing a fourth place and was second fastest 15-year-old — but still ended somewhat disappointed, knowing he could have won the event if swimming near his best.

On day two, after being persuaded by coach Ian Wells to swim the 400m individual medley, Ben produced his best time in the event and made the final which was unexpected. Ben also swam his fastest 50m freestyle, narrowly missing out on a final place. In the final of the 400m individual medley Ben, who went into the final seventh fastest, produced another best time and finished sixth — but was creditably second in the 15 years age group.

Coach Wells, trying to lift Ben after good day’s work, proved to him he had swum faster than ever with a best time in a 50m race and said there nothing wrong with the swimmer’s stamina as he finished strongly in the 400m individual medley.

Day three saw Ben fall back to the flatter form of the opening day in the 400m freestyle. His pace for the 50m split times was slower than the last 100m of his individual medley. This form continued into the 100m freestyle and although below his best in the 200 backstroke, Ben still managed to make the final for that event.

For the last swim of the weekend Ben needed to find his day two form and achieve a national time for the 200m backstroke event. This was not to be, though. Ben only improved by half second and finished in sixth place and third in the 15 years age group.

Ben discussed with his coach what gone wrong with his backstroke. Ian Wells explained to him that he had been trying to use power in the stroke and had lost the fast turn-over that Ben’s backstroke is generally all about. Hopefully Ben will return to his peak form at Enfield when he has his last chance to qualify for the National Championships at Sheffield at the end of July.
