Round-up for May 19, 20, 21

 

Nine youngsters from Boston Swimming Club tested their talents against strong opposition. The select contingent, under the supervision of club coach Ian Wells, travelled to tackle three days of action in the London Borough of Enfield Open Meet. And several creditable performances were turned in across more than 40 separate events.

 

Best moments saw outright wins in four events. Two of these went to Ben Pogson in the boys’ 14-15 years 100m backstroke and 200m backstroke, the latter seeing him set a personal best time of 2 minutes 14.74 seconds. Rebecca Price won the girls’ 12-13 years 200m freestyle. And Laura Swain achieved success with victory in the girls' 100m breaststroke, setting a new best time of 1.25.05 in winning her qualifying heat en route to the final.


There were numerous other top eight positions recorded.


Patrick Ikhena, swimming in the 12-13 years category, was highly placed in six of his events, the most prominent displays being second in the 200m breaststroke (PB of 2.57.40) and third in the 100m breaststroke. His other feats included fourth spot in the 100m butterfly, sixth in the 200m freestyle and seventh in both the 200m individual medley and 100m freestyle (the latter featuring a 1.02.97 PB in his qualifying heat).


Sam Wright (12-13 years) was runner-up in the 100m breaststroke, fourth in the 100m freestyle (PB of 1.02.74) and fifth in the 200m IM.


Ross West (12-13 years) came third in the 400m IM (PB of 5.41.24), fifth in the 200m butterfly and eighth in the 200m backstroke.


Zak Lomas (12-13 years) achieved third place in the 1500m freestyle while Alex French's best result was fourth place in the 200m butterfly in the same age range section.


In addition to his two event success, Ben Pogson (14-15 years) was also second in the 1500m freestyle (PB of 17.10.28) and third in the 200m breaststroke.


Rebecca Price had a busy schedule and claimed five other excellent results in addition to her previously mentioned win. In her 12-13 section, she was second in each of the 800m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke events - the latter featuring a 1.23.76 PB in her qualifying heat. Third place was her reward in the 400m freestyle and she also came sixth in the 200m IM.


Leah West’s best performance was sixth place in the 50m freestyle for the 15-plus age range with a 31.44 seconds PB as an added bonus.

Third place return for A-team

 

There was a third place finish for Boston Swimming Club’s A team in their latest Lincolnshire League meet.
The contest, staged at the Meres Leisure centre in Grantham saw the principal action revolve around the squads from Boston, South Lincs and Cleethorpes and District.

 

Boston battled hard to keep up with the pace, but in the end their 204 points total was 23 adrift of top spot.
Cleethorpes claimed the victors' spoils while South Lincs were second on 210 points.

 

Several swimmers achieved heat wins for Boston.


For the boys' contingent, successes went to Ben Marshall (open 100m freestyle), Ben Pogson (14-and-under 100m freestyle, 14-and-under 100m backstroke) and Reuben Reed (10 years 50m freestyle).

 

Wins for the girls went to Rebecca Price (14-and-under 100m freestyle, 14-and--under 100m butterfly), Laura Swain (12-and-under 50m breaststroke).

 

In addition, further victories went to the boys' and girls' 14-and-under medley relay teams, boys' open 4 x 25m freestyle, boys' open 4 x 50m freestyle, boys' 14-and-under 4 x 50m freestyle, and girls' 4 x 50m medley relay squads.


Individual personal best times went to the following: Ben Marshall, Sadie Haines,  Ben Pogson, Laura Swain (2), Jessica Murfin, Joshua Teague, Molly Wright, Tony Hamshaw, Rebecca Craven, Abigail Teague, Rebecca Price and Patrick Ikhena.

 

Round-up for May 6

 

Fenland action at the double

 

Two teams representing Boston Swimming Club contested another action schedule in the Fenland League. The A squad travelled to King’s Lynn and won their five-team competition. And the B team, at the Geoff Moulder Leisure Pool complex, took fourth place in their evening's programme.


The A side began in decisive fashion with success in the boys' and girls’ under-12s 100m individual medley events for Henry Careless and Molly Wright respectively. From that point, Boston never looked back - albeit only by three points at certain stages. However, overall, the Boston squad managed to fend off the challenge of their only real rivals, Grantham to claim the winners' spoils - victories in the final two races by Stephanie Goodale (13-and-under 50m backstroke) and the squadron relay team cementing their advantage.


As the meet progressed, there were several race winners for Boston A. These went to boys’ team members Henry Careless (12-and-under 100m individual medley), Jordan Butler (10 years 50m breaststroke, 10 years 50m freestyle), Jack Featherstone (11-and-under 50m butterfly), Frazer Overton (12-and-under 50m freestyle), Jack Ross (10 years 50m backstroke), Joseph Howe (11-and-under 50m freestyle), Joshua Teague (13-and-under 50m butterfly) plus Michael Craven (11-and-under 50m backstroke).

 

Girls’ heat winners comprised Stephanie Goodale (13-and-under 50m backstroke, 12-and-under 50m backstroke and 13-and-under 100m individual medley), Molly Wright (12-and-under 100m individual medley and 12-and-under 50m freestyle), Rebecca Craven (10 years 50m backstroke), Kayleigh North (13-and-under 50m butterfly),

 

There were also heat wins for the 9 years 4 x 25m medley relay and squadron relay teams.

 

Personal best times were recorded by: Henry Careless, Molly Wright (2), Robert Price, Jordan Butler (2), Abigail Teague, Paige Royce, Stephanie Goodale, Jack Ross, Joseph Howe, Kayleigh North (2) and Megan Sargeant.
The B team accumulated 88 points from their 39 events.


There was a plentiful supply of second and third places as well as a single race win achieved by Georgia Hodgkiss in the girls' 10-and-under 50m breaststroke.


In the final outcome, the team finished ahead of Chatteris and 21 points behind third placed Bottisham with Cambridge and Huntingdon occupying first and second places respectively.


There were several personal best times achieved among the Boston contingent. These went to Emma Penniston (3), Brendan Clark (2), Grace Pike (2), Georgia Hodgkiss (3), Kieran Edmonds, Katy McDonnell-Wood, George Needham, Timothy Johnson, Jennifer North (2), Ben Samra, Sophia Parla, Joshua McDonnell-Wood, Andrew Watson and Matthew Coleman.

 

Laura earns fine victory treble 

 

Fifteen Boston swimmers vying for Midland qualifying times attended the West Suffolk open meet at Bury St Edmunds. And individuals in the squad met with a fair degree of success.


Laura Swain enjoyed a fine victory treble with successes in the girls' 11-and-under 100m breaststroke, 11-and-under 50m breaststroke and 11-and-under 200m breaststroke. For the boys, Ben Pogson was a title winner in the 14-15 years 50m backstroke.


Runners-up performances were achieved by Zak Lomas (boys' 12-13 years 100m backstroke and 200m backstroke), Ben Pogson (boys’ 14-15 years 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke and 400m individual medley), Patrick Ikhena (boys' 12-13 years 200m individual medley).

 

Personal best feats went to Elvijs Roberts (2), Kimberley Van Haren, Ben Warren (3), Reuben Reed (3), Oliver Street (3), Ben Pogson (2), Jessica Murfin (3), Zak Lomas (2), Alex French (4), Ikhuemose Ikhena, Patrick Ikhena (4), Laura Swain (3), Ross West (2).
