Boston trio pit talents against nation’s best

A trio of Boston-based youngsters pitted their swimming skills against the nation's top talent - and emerged with plenty of credit. Patrick Ikhena, Laura Swain and Ben Pogson qualified for the ASA Cheestrings Age Group National Championships in Sheffield. And all gained from the experience of being involved in such a high level of competition at the 50m Ponds Forge pool complex.

Patrick achieved highest place reward for the Boston Swimming Club trio in the 100m breaststroke. Although not quite producing his best form, he still proved himself to be one of the best youngsters in the country with a seventh placed finish in 1 minute 22.84 seconds. He also tackled the 100m freestyle event where he came 21st in 1:04.40.

Laura Swain produced a personal best time of 3:03.20 seconds in the girls 11 years age group 200m breaststroke and has some justification for feeling hard done by in missing a place in the British Championships. In the Sheffield event, an invitation was handed out for the Turkish national junior squad to compete. And one of their swimmers, Dilara Cakirturk, came fifth - meaning that Laura’s 11th spot (and 10th fastest in the country) was only good enough for first reserve status in the British Championships. In the 100m breaststroke event, Laura was looking to make a similar high impact in the standings. But a below-par start saw the youngster not matching her previous split time over 50m and led to her missing out on a place in the final, ranked 13th in a time of 1:27.31.

Ben Pogson who had enjoyed a fine season overall, found the competition at the nationals a little too hot to handle. But he still performed with credit, finishing in 29th place in the 1,500m freestyle and producing his fastest time in a 50 metre pool. In his strongest event, the backstroke, Ben finished 18th place in the 200m discipline (2:22.47) and 12th in the 100m competition (1:05.48).

Round-up for July 1

A-team retain lead role in league table

Boston kept a grip on top spot in the Anglian League with victory in their latest swimming gala. The club's A team finished in pole position when hosting a five-squad meet at the Geoff Moulder Leisure Pool. Their 115 point total was sufficient to fend off King's Lynn while Norwich were third. Creditably, Boston's B team took fourth spot ahead of Wisbech.

Boston A now sit at the top of the Anglian League with a maximum 15 points from their programme so far and look well set to claim the title when the competition’s final round is held in September. The B-side, meanwhile, are respectably placed in mid-table - comfortably ahead of several other club's A teams.

Boston A’s latest success was established on the strength of some consistent performances throughout their ranks, the highlights being nine heat wins. These were achieved by Ben Pogson (boys open 100m individual medley), Elvijs Roberts (boys 13-and-under 100m freestyle), Joe Morris (boys 15-and-under 100m breaststroke), Ikhuemose Ikhena (boys 13-and-under 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly), Sam Wright (boys open 50m freestyle), Laura Swain (girls 15-and-under 200m IM), Alex French (boys 13-and-under 100m breaststroke) and the 6 x 50m relay team.

A further 13 second places bolstered the tally of the Boston squad whose members achieved 18 personal best times. They were: Ben Pogson (2), Alex French (2), Ruth Singleton (2), Elvijs Roberts, Stephanie Goodale, Jessica Murfin, Joe Morris (2), Oliver Street, Amelia Murfin, Ikhuemose Ikhena, Paige Royce, Sam Wright (2) and Sadie Haines.

The B team performed creditably throughout the evening, their points tally notably boosted by four fine race wins. These went to Mark Tebbs (boys 15-and-under 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle), Nathan Sargeant (boys open 50m backstroke) plus Patrick Ikhena (boys open 50m breaststroke).

Personal best times were in plentiful supply. These were recorded by Patrick Ikhena (2), Mark Tebbs (2), Hollie Featherstone (2), Thomas Sargeant, Emma Penniston, Nathan Sargeant (3), Jemma Tointon, Henry Careless, Heather Guy, Holly Spinks,  Jack Featherstone, Susannah Yielding and Joseph Howe.

Points totals: Boston A 115, King's Lynn 105, City Norwich 91, Boston B 76, Wisbech 75.
