Round-up for January 21

Victory for A team, credit for B squad

Gala success came the way of Boston Swimming Club’s A team in their latest Anglian League meet.

And the club's B squad also turned in a creditable display to claim third place in the five-team event staged at the Geoff Moulder Leisure Pool complex in Boston.

Overall it was an excellent evening for the whole club with 17 race wins (14 for the A side and three for the B) and 30 personal best times recorded.

Boston A quickly got into their stroke and after four wins in the opening five heats they never looked back and gradually stretched away to a match-winning haul of 132 points.

Race successes here came for Rebecca Price (girls 100m open individual medley), Ben Pogson (boys 15u 100m butterfly), Ruth Singleton (girls 15u 100m butterfly), Robert Price (boys 13u 100m freestyle), Laura Swain (girls 15u 100m breaststroke), Jessica Murfin (girls 15u 200m IM and girls 15u 100m freestyle), Rhys Cox (boys open 50m breaststroke), Kimberley Van Haren (girls 13u 100m backstroke), Leah West (girls 50m open breaststroke), Eleanor Reed (girls 15u 100m backstroke), Alex French (boys 13u 100m breaststroke), Amelia Murfin (girls 13u 100m breaststroke) and the concluding all-age relay team.

The B team made a good fist of the same meet and picked up race wins by Katy Thorn (girls open 50m butterfly), Ross West (boys 15u 100m freestyle) and Ose Ikhena (boys 13u 100m backstroke) in addition to a clutch of second and third places.

The B squad pegged back some early deficits to establish supremacy over Norwich Swans and St Ives and at one stage came within two points of second placed Wisbech.

Personal best times here were achieved by Heather Guy, Ose Ikhena (two), Emma Penniston, Katy Thorn, Ross West, Hannah Cox (two), Holly Spinks, Nathan Sargeant, Stephanie Goodale, Conor Murphy, Zak Lomas and Henry Careless.

Final points: Boston A 132, Wisbech 107, Boston B 87, Norwich Swans 69, St Ives 67.

Plenty of pride for “too quick” squad

Boston Swimming Club youngsters were too quick for their own good at the Arthur Bailey Memorial Trophy even in Whittlesey. Many of them stormed to race victories, but gala rules included strict cut-off times to help try and provide balanced competition for different standards of abilities.

Unfortunately for Boston, 15 of their swimmers were too speedy in either winning or coming second in various disciplines. And in the process they missed out on adding points to the team total.

However, there was still plenty of pride in numerous personal best times being established. Such was the success of the squad that only seven of the 40 individual events failed to yield PBs. And the contest was a useful platform for many of the club’s nine-year-olds to help them gain gala experience in readiness for other competitive meets ahead.

In view of the diminished gala rewards, Boston had to settle for fourth place in the six-team contest on 140 points and missed out on reclaiming the trophy they had won two years earlier.

Boston event winners eligible to have points counted were: Zach McDonnell-Wood (boys 9 years 25m butterfly), the boys 12-and-under 4 x 25m freestyle relay team, Eleanor Careless (girls 9 years 25m freestyle), Holly Spinks (girls 13u 50m breaststroke), Megan Sargeant (girls 9 years 25m breaststroke), David Cheer (boys 9 years 25m backstroke), Oliver Street (boys 12u 50m butterfly), the girls 9 years 4 x 25m freestyle relay team and Katy Tointon (girls 10 years 25m breaststroke).

“Speeding tickets” were received by the following Boston race winners: Joseph Howe (boys 12u 50m freestyle), Abigail Teague (girls 11u 25m breaststroke), Jordan Butler (boys 10 years 25m backstroke and 25m butterfly), Katy Tointon (girls 9 years 25m butterfly), Paige Royce (girls 11u 25m backstroke), Jack Featherstone (boys 12u 50m backstroke), Joseph Howe (boys 13u 50m backstroke), Michael Craven (boys 11u 25m butterfly) and Oliver Street (boys 10 years 25m breaststroke).

Overall, personal best times across the board for Boston were set by Katie McDonnell-Wood (two), Joseph Howe (two), Abigail Teague, Kieran Edmonds, Megan Coleman, Jordan Butler, Katy Tointon (two), Zach McDonnell-Wood, William Bell, Paige Royce, George Needham, Rebecca Craven, Jordan Butler, Eleanor Careless, Jack Ross, Hollie Spinks, Jennifer North, Rebecca Stutchfield, George Needham, Megan Sargeant, Adam Clark, Stephanie Goodale, Rebecca Ryan (two), Jack Featherstone, Megan Edmonds, Oliver Street (two), Harriet Housam and Michael Craven.

Final gala points: Dereham 174, Wisbech 170, Deepings 146, Boston 140, King’s Lynn 136, St Neots 126.

Round-up for January 7

First Boston open gala a big success

In excess of 60 Boston Swimming Club members made an impact on an historic day. The occasion was the   first open gala hosted by the club with the pool at RAF Cranwell being the venue for the landmark event.

A nucleus of Boston committee members and officials spent countless hours painstakingly working through swathes of entries received from other clubs from various parts of the country in addition to masses of paperwork to formulate the day’s activities.

And their efforts were rewarded with an excellent programme of action that will lay the platform for what will hopefully become an annual competition. A busy action schedule duly followed with Boston well represented in the honours stakes — various individual successes and high placings enabling the home squad to clinch the top club accolade from the meet. And Katy Thorn won the trophy for top girl on the day.

Boston swimmers collecting medal awards in the various events were numerous, as were personal best times which amounted to a total of 111 in the final count-up.

Boston swimmers achieving top three finishes were as follows:
