Round-up for February 18

A-team enjoy Fenland success

Exciting Fenland League success came the way of Boston Swimming Club at a meet staged in Peterborough.
The Boston A team turned on the power to just get the better of City of Peterborough by a five-point margin. Saxons were left in third spot while March and Ely had their own battle to see who finished fourth. For the bulk of the gala, never more than six points separated Boston and Peterborough as the two teams went full tilt for success.

The host club's squad, however, always had a fractional edge until 10 events from the end when Boston managed to force their way ahead to gain a five-point lead going into the final two races — which they maintained in determined fashion. Highlights on the night for the Boston contingent were plentiful with 15 heat wins and 20 personal best times being recorded.

Victories were achieved by the following swimmers: Joshua Teague, boys 12-and-under 100m individual medley; William Bell, boys 10u 50m breaststroke, 10u 25m butterfly; Amelia Murfin girls 11u 50m butterfly, 12u 50m backstroke; Elvijs Roberts, boys 12u 50m freestyle, Katie Bell, girls 12u 50m freestyle; Oliver Street, boys 10u 50m freestyle; Rebecca Craven, girls 10u 50m freestyle; Michael Craven, boys 11u 50m backstroke; Kimberley Van Haren, girls 12u 50m breaststroke; Sam Reed, boys 13u 50m freestyle; Jessica Murfin, girls 13u 50m freestyle; Reuben Reed, boys 13u 100m individual medley and the 8 x 25m squadron relay team.

Personal bests were achieved by: Joshua Teague (two), Molly Wright, Sam Reed, William Bell (two), Matthew Coleman, Amelia Murfin (two), Katie Bell (two), Sam Reed (two), Kayleigh North, Oliver Street, Michael Craven, Paige Royce, Kimberley Van Haren, Ben Warren and Reuben Reed.

Final points: Boston A 163, City of Peterborough 158, Saxons 121, March 69, Ely 64.

Third spot reward for B team

On the same night, Boston’s B squad travelled to Grantham for a separate Fenland League fixture against the host club, Chatteris, Deepings and King's Lynn. And the Boston team battled well to finish third on 118 points behind eventual winners Grantham and runners-up Deepings.

Boston swimmers produced several good performances with a total of 22 personal best times being recorded. Due to the strength of rival squads, Boston heat successes were limited.

But success was achieved by Frazer Overton in the boys 13u 50m backstroke, Laura swain in the girls 12u 50m backstroke and Brandan Clark in the boys 13u 50m butterfly. Six other swims yielded second placed rewards.
Boston swimmers who set new best times were: Thomas Sargeant, Katie McDonnell-Wood (two), Henry Warren (two), Abigail Teague (two), Harriet Housam, Alex French (two), Grace Pike, Jordan Butler, Georgia Hodgkiss, Jennifer North (two), Laura Swain (two), Brendan Clark, Holly Spinks (two), George Needham and Bethany Pogson.

Final points:  Grantham 153, Deepings 140, Boston B 118, King's Lynn 97, Chatteris 51.

Round-up for February 11

Under-strength squad still earn credit for efforts

Depleted resources left Boston Swimming Club short of a full squad for their latest Lincolnshire League gala.

But the team still made valiant efforts against strong opposition and still managed to emerge with plenty of credit.

Due to an unexpected date change for the meet at Gainsborough, Boston connections had to cope without the services of many of their junior competitors who were otherwise engaged at the Boston and District primary schools’ annual championship.

This left the club having to leave some key events blank with no representatives available. However, on a positive note, there were still some useful individual performances with five event wins, 10 second places and eight thirds.

Victories went to Rebecca Price in the girls’ 14-and-under freestyle, Ikhuemose Ikhena in the boys 12u 50m breaststroke, Ben Pogson in the boys 14u 100m backstroke plus the boys 14u 4 x 50m medley relay and 4 x 50m relay teams — comprising Ben Pogson, Ross West, Sam Wright and Patrick Ikhena in both instances.

Second places in various events were secured by Oliver Street (two), Sam Wright, Rebecca Price, Elvijs Roberts, George Dix, Ikhuemose Ikhena and the boys  4 x 50m medley relay teams at open and 12-and-under age levels.

Third places went to Leah West, Joshua Teague, George Dix, Katy Thorn, Patrick Ikhena, Jessica Murfin plus the girls’ 4 x 50m freestyle and the girls’ open 4 x 50m medley relay teams.

Boston were never quite able to stay with the gala pace set by the likes of Cleethorpes and District and Deepings. But even then the former went on to pull clear of the whole pack to record a decisive win.

Boston’s total would almost certainly have been significantly higher — and probably good enough for second place — but for 10 ‘no swim’ events which yielded no points.  Final points: Cleethorpes and District 223, Deepings 170, Scunthorpe Anchor 169, South Axholme 162, Boston 144, Grimsby Santa Marina 123.

Club teams turn on Fenland League form

Fenland League gala success came the way of Boston Swimming Club in the competition’s latest meet.

In the final count-up, Boston A netted 163 points, seven ahead of Grantham. Boston B’s total of 113 was comfortably ahead of Wisbech with a weakened Chatteris side trailing in last, due in no small measure to a lack of swimmers which led to them being unable to compete in several heats.
