December 17 review: Boston Nips 1, Boston
Sunday Boys 4 The Sunday Boys progressed to the knockout stage of the
Mid-Lincs Squash League Cup competition with a convincing win over Boston
Nips. Manager Dick Carrington had lost Phil Wright and the Baxter boys for
varying reasons, but still came up trumps with his astute team selection. Dutch Van Den Bosch recorded his first win for the
Sunday Boys against Barry Early. Guided by his manager, he proved too strong
for a game opponent, winning 3-1. Brett De Angelis nailed Nips’ captain Stuart Morrow who
contributed to his own downfall with a succession of self-inflicted errors.
The final score was 3-0 at something of a canter for the victor. John Secker pulled one back for the nips against the
experienced Paul Smith. The latter pushed him all the way, but the younger
man covered all areas of the court to win 3-0. Bob Pearson clinched the winning point against Chris
Williscroft. There was nothing much between the players, though the Sunday
Boy ultimately had a superior zimmer frame that he used to maximum effect in
achieving victory. Tom Smith rounded off the evening by defeating Paul
Timms in a confident manner to secure his team’s 4-1 success on the night. |

November 19 review: Horncastle 0, Boston Sunday Boys 4 After the previous week’s lamentable effort against
Boston Nips, the Sunday Boys’ manager dick Carrington recalled Tom Smith and
Nick Baxter to the team. Phil Wright and Bob Pearson dropped down the order to
give the side more strength in depth. They had to play two of Horncastle’s
talented youngsters who are improving in leaps and bounds and benefiting from
playing in a competitive league environment. Both Sunday Boys in question recorded victories for the
“wise heads on old shoulders” brigade. Another year down the line, though,
and it could quite easily be a different scenario. Nick Baxter proved too strong for Horncastle’s Simon
Grant, covering all areas of the court with authority as he claimed a 3-0
success. The highlight of the evening came at No 1 string between
Sunday boy Tom Smith and his opponent Gary Worley. An extremely close game of
quality squash unfolded with both players saving match balls as fortunes
swung one way then the other. Tom eventually clinched the vital point to win
10-9 in the fifth and deciding game of an epic match. |

November 12 review Boston Nips 2, Boston Sunday Boys 2 Valuable Mid-Lincs Squash League points slipped away
from the Sunday Boys at the weekend. Manager Dick Carrington rotated his
squad, but this time to disastrous effect. Dutch Vandenbosch and Brett de Angelis played their
first games. But should they have bothered? Or would they have been better
off at home watching “Corrie”? Dutch snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against
Katie Price. He fought back to square things up from a 2-0 deficit, but then
lost 3-2. Brett started at pace against John Secker, eventually finishing at
a crawl as he was soundly beaten 3-0. Senior members of the Sunday Boys team, Bob Pearson and
Phil Wright, had little margin for error as they attempted to retrieve the
situation. Phil battered Chris Williscroft into submission with a controlled
display of power and aggression in a 3-0 victory margin. Bob took a little more time against Paul Timms, losing
the first game before his muscles had warmed up sufficiently. But was his
limbs got into full swing, he nicked a 3-1 win. Team changes can be expected in the Sunday Boys ranks
for the November 19 visit to the squash mecca that is Horncastle and manager
Carrington stressed he cannot tolerate below-par performances. |

November 5 review Boston III 1, Boston Sunday Boys 3 Two quality teams crossed swords as Boston III
entertained Boston Sunday Boys. The latter were keen to gain revenge for last
season when they had to play second fiddle to a side that went on to lift the
Mid-Lincs Squash League championship. Boys’ director of squash Dick
Carrington pulled the strings to good effect, overseeing the efforts of his
team. Bob Pearson gave the Sunday Boys a decent start with a
3-0 demolition of Jim Woods. To be fair, the latter suffered from a lack of
practice, but Bob was happy to take the winner’s spoils regardless of
circumstances. On the adjacent court, Paul Smith took an early lead
against Boston III’s Stuart Dunlop. However, Father time had yet to play his
part as the younger Boston III player fought back from a 2-0 deficit to win
3-2 and level the match score. Sunday Boy Nick Baxter wasted little time in asserting
his authority over Jake Fountain. Hitting the ball crisply, accurately and
with few errors, he comfortably eased to a 3-0 success. Similarly at number one string, Tom Smith played with a
great deal of patience, hitting quality shots to create winning opportunities
against Ady Proctor. He maintained such a high standard of play that he
eventually ran out a convincing 3-0 winner. Manager Carrington gave all his players a pat on the
back as each and every one had given their all. By way of celebration, he
allowed himself an extra ice cube in his post-match orange squash. |

October 15 review Boston Sunday Boys 4, Skegness 0 Boston
Sunday Boys entertained Skegness on the opening weekend of the Mid-Lincs Squash
League. Preparation for the campaign had gone well but unfortunately on the
day there were a few gaps in the ranks. Nick Baxter had disappeared to
Amsterdam, Brett de Angelis phoned in sick and Dick Carrington had strained
his drinking arm. Despite
resources being stretched the Sunday Boys welcomed back Tom Smith on his
return from his missionary work over the Pennines. Andy
Baxter came in having not played for several months. It was hoped that he had
forgotten all his bad habits. This appeared to be the case in his No 4 string
match against Sally Marvel. Andy had to pull out all the stops against an
opponent who punished any errors. He eventually won 3-1, both players
acquitting themselves well. Phil
Wright increased the lead for the Sunday boys against Ian Palin. Dominating
throughout, he cruised home 9-4, 9-6, 9-2. Tom
Smith clinched victory against Skegness number one, Pete Brown who
unfortunately played with a finger injury — not ideal when playing a racket
sport. Tom showed little mercy or compassion by winning, 9-3, 9-1, 9-1. Bob
Pearson rounded off a successful evening for the Sunday Boys against Paul
Wilson. Using his serve to good effect he secured victory 9-6, 9-5, 9-2. It was
an excellent start for the Sunday Boys. However, director of squash Dick
Carrington will ensure the team does not get carried away by the result.
Squad rotation will keep everyone on their toes. Any dissenting voices are
likely to be dealt with accordingly! |
