Week ending June 2:

 

Boston Snooker Centre played host to the 23rd Jubilee Tournament on Sunday May 29 when 32 players competed in eight groups of four before progress was eventually made to a showpiece evening final.


Players who won all three of their qualifying games won six of the afternoon groups. These were Nigel Salmon, Kristian Willetts, Steve Mooney and Brian Cox from the Super League and Steffan Taylor and Adam Hancock from Division Two.

In Group E, Kye Overton and Mark Tabor both won two frames but Kye went through on the aggregate, scoring 210 points to Mark’s 197. There were three players in Group B who each won two frames, namely Paul Storr, John Clarke and Adam Elston. However, after an exciting last frame, it was Clarke who finished with 12 points more than Adam Elston.

The evening session included four from the Super League, three from Division Two, one from Division One. There were no representatives from the Premier Division. Nigel Salmon again won his three frames in group one, but the final one was only by a margin of 64-60 against John Clarke. In group two Brian Cox came from 40 behind in his last frame against Kristian Willetts to win the group with a 63 break. He had lost his previous frame to Steve Mooney.

This left the final between the previously undefeated Nigel Salmon and Brian Cox. Nigel had the first chance in frame one and compiled a break of 55 to win 78-2. He looked to have won 2-0 but in the second frame he broke down on 37 and Brian came back with a 54 to make it 1-1. The third frame was scrappy but Brian gradually pulled ahead. And with one red left, Nigel was 35 behind. He potted the last red and got his white ball up the table for the black. But here he fell victim to an “in-off” and conceded to hand the title to Cox.

 

Nigel, however, had the satisfaction of scoring the highest break of the day, a 67 in his opening  frame against Colin Bowers.

 

 

Week ending May 14:

 

The new Boston Town snooker champion is Craig Fitter. He beat Carl Rowe 5-2 in the final, played at the Boston Snooker Centre on Sunday. Carl had won his semi-final 4-1 against Brian Cox, while Craig had beaten Jason Bates in the other semi-final. Craig hit a 42 break to win the first frame. But Carl won the second. A 57 break put Craig back in front in the third. And, when Carl looked like levelling again, Craig came from behind to make it 3-1 with a 33.

 

Again in the fifth frame Carl was well in front but Craig made a 68 clearance to go 4-1 ahead. Carl finally hit form to score a 38 break in the sixth but Craig immediately hit back with a 53. Carl, however, cleared the last three colours to make it 4-2. It looked as if Carl might pull another frame back in the seventh game but Craig again came from behind to win 72-35 and take the plaudits of the 30-strong crowd, which included several of the younger players.

 

At a recent meeting, it was decided that there would be a Jubilee Tournament after all this year. But all 32 players taking part would pay Ł3 each to cover the expense of the tables. The tournament is to be played at the Boston Snooker Centre on Sunday May 28 starting at 2pm. All other competition finals will be played this Sunday at the Boston Snooker Centre, including the town billiards, which will be between Hugh Pinner and Chris Taylor. Play will start at 10.30am and continue all day. Spectators are welcome.
