End-of-season competition prizes were decided at finals
night for the Boston Billiards and Snooker League competitions. The finals
were played at the Boston Snooker Club.
Jason Bates won the Town Snooker Cup final for the fifth time. He made his
intentions clear in the first frame, scoring a brilliant 123 break. The
second frame was much closer, but Jason had a 40 break to win 73-41 then he
won the third 69-33. Adey Young hit a 40 break in the fourth but Jason
answered with a 70 to win 90-40. He completed a 5-0 victory with breaks
of 40 and 56.
Earlier in the day, Adey Young with Brian Cox had won the final of the Warth
Doubles Cup, beating Darren Christian and Carl Rowe 4-1, thus preventing Darren
and Carl completing a hat-trick as they had been successful in each of the
two previous years.
The Town Billiards Cup final was between two team-mates Hugh Pinner
and Nigel Salmon. Nigel settled first and built up a lead, but Hugh
pulled almost level with a break of 44. Nigel then had a break of 74 to
establish a healthy lead, which Hugh could never catch and Nigel won 500-361.
So Hugh failed to win the title for a 12th time and Nigel recorded his second
win, having won before in 1997.
Kristian Willetts repeated his success of last year by winning the Ray
Loveley Cup for the under-20s, which he first won in 2001. He hit his
best form to win by a 4-0 margin against Marc Cosgrove.
One player who did complete a hat-trick was Danny Nuttell in the final of the
Men’s Own Cup. he hit a 51 break in the first frame, then led 2-0 but
Eamon Taylor junior fought back to make it 2-2 before Danny used his
experience to win 4-2.
While this final was being played, Eamon’s father was playing on the next
table against Glen Ladds in the final of the Body Billiards Cup. Eamon
Taylor senior had better luck, winning by 300-227. Eamon Taylor senior also
featured in the final of the Seniors Cup later in the day.
This time his opponent was Colin Baxter. Eamon won
the first frame but Colin then won the next three frames. Eamon won the
fifth frame by a single point and went on to win two more close frames for a
4-3 victory.
The final of the Leagill Trophy was again played by
team-mates Darren Christian and Carl Rowe. The latter raced into a 2-0
lead but Darren won the third. Carl made it 3-1 but facing defeat,
Darren fought back and levelled at 3-3. It was Carl, however, who won the
last frame and he was never behind.
