August 26 round-up Pre-season preparations for Boston Rugby Club continued
over the bank holiday weekend with a trials match at home against Grimsby.
With both sides bringing a mixture of first and second team players, it was
an ideal opportunity to get some much-needed match practice and test the
fitness levels of players. Playing four 20-minute periods gave both sides an
opportunity to test out different combinations and allow new players an
opportunity to put in a claim for a first team place. The trial certainly had an international flavour to it
with two Samoans, three Zimbabweans and a mixture of home nations players
taking part. The overall match result was a deserved 29-19 victory for
Boston. The highlight of the trial was an impressive hat-trick of tries from
winger Paul Jarvis, in particular his second score which came straight out of
the coaching hand book. From outside the 22m line, fly half Rhys Gosling placed a cross-field diagonal kick which landed into the arms of winger Jarvis who had only to cross the line to score. It was an encouraging display for the home side, coming after last week’s victory in the Horncastle sevens tournament. Boston entertain Southwell at home on Saturday kick off 3pm, in another friendly, while the seconds travel away to Southwell, before the serious business of league rugby takes place in week four of the season. Training takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at the Club in the Princess Royal Arena, off the Boardsides, at 7pm. |

August 19 round-up There was an excellent start to the new season for Boston Rugby Club with representatives from the Boardsides set-up earning victory in the Horncastle sevens tournament on Saturday. The “Horncastle Horn” is the first of hopefully many more pieces of silverware to be collected in the new campaign. Boston fielded two teams in the
competition. One team went all the way to overall victory and the other just
failed to get to the knockout stages when a late try from Lincoln left them
two points short. Boston soon emerged as favourites for the competition when
they won all of their group games and only conceded two tries along the way. Market Rasen provided the opposition in
the semi-final and held a narrow 10-5 lead at half-time. Rasen equalised
early in the second half but Boston sealed victory with a Paul Jarvis try. In
the final Boston met up with Lincoln and sound defence proved to be the
foundation that would win the day. Each side used the whole width of the
pitch in an attempt to break the deadlock but at half time there was still no
score. Captain Lee Van Haren demanded more from his team and Ben Houseman
responded by running in a try that was followed by another from Paul Jarvis.
A final effort put Boston 15-0 clear and made certain of the “Horncastle Horn”
and the team rounded off a great day when Ben Houseman was named player of
the tournament. On Saturday August 26 Boston entertain
Grimsby at the Princess Royal Sports Arena. Kick-off is 3pm with everyone
welcome. |
