April 14 round-up:

Boston 1st XV 58, Nottinghamians 14

Boston Rugby Club 1st XV rounded off their Midlands 5 East (North) League campaign with a points scoring spree against Nottinghamians, a side that eventually finished third in the table — one place behind the blue and whites who took runners-up honours.

The Boston management team were looking for the players to sign off their campaign in style. And there were some genuine champagne moments that made for a fitting finale for coach Ray Hayward and second row Ryan Shelford in advance of their return to New Zealand.

Boston started brightly and grabbed their opening score via a solo effort by Rhys Gosling. A second try followed when scrum half Tom Kemp finished off a sustained forward drive and a third try followed a classic move that ended with Peter Stubley going over in the corner.

The home passing and movement was excellent in virtually all departments and the Boston lead stood at 19-0 after just 15 minutes. But just after this point, Boston lost their momentum and had James Fendyke sin-binned for infringements in the loose. As a result, Nottinghamians crept back into the game and clawed back the deficit to 19-14. But then Boston rallied once more and scored a nerve-easing fourth try through centre Ryan Krause.

Boston started the second half with renewed vigour and scored again when a kick by Gosling failed to find touch and centre Paul Jarvis collected possession to score a fifth try for the side. Minutes later, number eight Ben Hausermann broke blind from a scrum and fed winger Stubley who outpaced his opponent to complete his brace. This gave Boston a 34-14 lead and from this stage they went on to grab another 24 points without reply.

Four tries came via the scoring efforts of Gosling, two by winger Perry Cumber and one for full-back Sam Wainwright.

Boston first XV: Sampson, Dowse, Buckberry, Cannon, Fendyke, Shelford, Miles, Hausermann, Kemp, Gosling, Krause, Jarvis, Stubley, Wainwright. Replacements: Collins, Cooke, Jones.

Boston seconds also finished their season on a high with a 68-12 victory over Nottinghamians seconds.
