North Road old hens championship

The North Road Championship Club’s old hens race, held in conjunction with the young bird national from Berwick on September 11, was won by the husband and wife partnership of Bridget and Geoff Clare, of Old Leake.

And they also took second place. Provisional results show a winning margin of more than 50 yards a minute over third-placed Frank and Ann Tasker, of Wainfleet.

The two Clare pigeons, both yearlings and both Simons Brothers Jansennes, arrived together, but first in the clock was the Dutch rung direct import chequer hen which has been a very consistent performer and which flew through to 400 miles from Thurso this old bird season.

Second into the clock was a blue bred in the Clare lofts off direct imports from Holland, again a consistent racer as a young bird and yearling.

Both had been paired after the old-bird racing season and allowed to sit out their eggs before being parted and subsequently re-paired, and both were sent to Berwick rearing seven-day-old babies. Both had had two training races with the young birds from Whitley Bay.

Geoff and Bridget are also sixth section and 11th open on the provisional verification times in the young bird national, but their two yearling hen birds beat their first young bird by nine minutes. Geoff, no stranger to NRCC success, said: “They came on a good line, but they lost a bit of time in coming down because of the wind.”

Now aged 58 and a fancier since the age of 14, businessman Geoff set a record in NRCC racing 29 years ago that has never been equalled.

That was when his outstanding widowhood cock bird Lucky won the race from Perth for the second successive time. The partnership has also been beaten by seconds to the King’s Cup from Lerwick, and been second half a dozen more times in NRCC races.

This is very much a partnership in pigeon racing, in business and in life, and Geoff will be the first to acknowledge Bridget’s contribution in all they have achieved in all these spheres.

Their first pigeon verified was doing a velocity of 1735 yards per minute for the 205 miles to their loft. Ironically this could be their last North Road Championship Club win as they are among the growing number of pigeon fanciers contemplating a move to France.

It is a particular pleasing result for them because of the confidence they showed in establishing a stud of the Simons Bros Jansennes in this country. They have proved they can race them as well as breed them, and other fanciers up and down the country are also winning with these birds.

Other early verified times in the old hens race, when 76 members sent 388 birds, were: F and A Tasker, Wainfleet, 1681; PJ and M Dayton, Louth, 1676; I and S Rich, Isleham, 1663; T and S Perkins and Seymour, Peterborough, 1647; Barton and Elston, Lincoln, 1641; W A Pell, Peterborough, 1631; Lannan and Louth, Boston, 1613; Mr and Mrs P J Newbold, Friskney, 1587; T. Enderby, Spalding, 1562; Mamwell Bros, Louth, 1557; Mr and Mrs J Mason and D Page, Spilsby, 1547; M Wilkinson, Louth, 1547; W Beckett, Wisbech, 1539; R Farrington and Son, Great Abington, 1538; Mr and Mrs G E Appleby, Louth, 1537; R True, Bardney, 1535; R J Govier, Gt Abington, 1534; Mr and Mrs B Garnham, Boston, 1532; T and B Woodhouse, Cambridge, 1528.

North Road young bird championship

Elsewhere, local area pigeon fanciers proved their expertise in a national race at the weekend. While outright victory eluded them as the Lincoln partnership of Barton and Elston won the North Road Championship Club's young bird national from Berwick, the calibre of regional enthusiasts was emphasised by the number of high positions taken.

The provisional winning velocity was 1764 yards per minute, but a very close second was Darren Peters, of East Heckington, who competes with Boston and District Flying Club. He had five of his 80-strong entry drop together to take second place on 1759ypm, and will be well represented in the final result.

Kevin Lawson, of Ollerton, the NRCC’s most successful fancier over recent seasons, takes third place in the provisional result on 1756, Mr and Mrs John Dixon, of Spalding, are next on 1707, Dave Barrett, of Lincoln, follows on 1706, and Mr and Mrs Paul Newbold, of Friskney, are on 1684.

Then comes N Pickering and Son, of Ollerton, on 1682, followed by the Boston quartet of Upsall and Trigg, 1679, Mr and Mrs Russ Skinner, 1672, John Hardy and Troops, 1669, and Mr and Mrs Geoff Clare, 1663.

Twelfth in the provisional result are Mr and Mrs M Woolley, of Newark, on 1663, with Karl Scholz, of Wainfleet, on 1660, in front of Frank and Ann Tasker, also of Wainfleet, who record a velocity of 1658. Also among the front runners is John Creese, of Spalding, on 1646. The race had been delayed until Sunday because od Saturday's bad weather. There were 3, 967 birds competing, sent by 309 fanciers.

Pigeon racing news for weekend September 3/4, 2005

Pigeon racing clubs from the local area competing with the Peterborough and District Federation were racing from Whitley Bay for the second successive week. But this time, with the wind on their nose and in the heat of the day, the birds found the going much tougher than the previous week.

Nevertheless there were some good performances, notably by Frank and Ann Tasker in the Skegness and Wainfleet, and Alford clubs. They took the first three positions in both clubs.

There are signs, too, that Paul and Jane Newbold, of PJ Lofts at Friskney, are getting their team into form, and former national winners, Mr and Mrs Bob Boulton, have won their last two races in the Skegness club.

Darren Peters and Son, of East Heckington, had a comprehensive win in Boston and District RPC, while there was a fine performance by D Henry who took the first three places in the strong Boston Central RPC, something that doesn’t happen very often.
