Pigeon racing news for weekend July 23/24, 2005

THERE’S a clutch of top-class racing pigeon fanciers in Boston capable of competing with the best. They showed this again when competing in the North Road Championship Club’s classic race from Lerwick, in the Shetland Isles, a distance of 500 miles to most local fanciers.

Although the top prize eluded them — this went to Gordon Cockaday, of Norwich, on a velocity of 1403 yards per minute — the likes of Dave Brackenbury, Ken Milne, Geoff Clare and Brian Garnham will feature high in the final result.

Dave, in fact, tops the strong Section C in the provisional result with a Willy Thas pigeon he bought from another legendary fancier, Frank Tasker, of Wainfleet. Dave, winner of the NRCC’s Fraserburgh race four years ago and close to national honours on many previous occasions, had a fantastic race by timing eight birds inside an hour. He looks like being around 10th in the open result.

Knocking on the door, too, is Ken Milne who proved that his past successes at the distance were no fluke. Also prominent in the result will be Geoff and Bridget Clare and Brian and Angie Garnham, both partnerships being national winners in the past.

Provisional open result based on first-timed pigeons (365 members sent 2294 birds): G Cockaday and Son, Norwich, 1403, K Lawson, Ollerton, 1397, J Bellerby, Spalding, 1390, B Crotch, Norwich, 1387, G Bell, Calverton, 1382, Mr and Mrs G Knowles, Mansfield, 1376, R Carlton and Sons, Bourne, 1370, Mr and Mrs F Widdison, Nottingham, 1360, D J Brackenbury, Boston, 1347, R Mamwell, Louth 1343, M Wilkinson, Louth, 1341, Perry Bros and Son, King’s Lynn, 1341, Mr and Mrs J Dixon, Spalding 1336, M A Rickett, Weston, 1335, N Wells, Wymondham, 1335, K Milne and Son, Boston, 1335, Kemp and Son, Gedling, 1334, Mr and Mrs P G Clare, Boston, 1334.
