Report for September 18

Clare duo end campaign on a high

The curtain came down on the racing pigeon season when Boston and District Flying Club held an open young bird race from Perth.

Ending the campaign with a bang was the husband-and-wife partnership of Bridget and Geoff Clare, former members of the club when living in Old Leake, but now racing out of Sloothby.

They squeezed just in front of neighbours Brian Sears and Frank Bartle, who were third and fourth, but the Clares took the next four places, flying a distance of 266 miles.

Results: 1 and 2 Mr and Mrs PG Clare 1341.963 and 1341.835, 3 and 4 Sears and Bartle 1341.750 and 1340, 5, 6, 7 and 8 Mr and Mrs Clare 1323, 1322, 1302 and 1298, 9, 10, 11 and 12 Mr and Mrs B Garnham 1295, 1294, 1293 and 1292, 13 A Kirkman 1291, 14 and 15 Mr and Mrs Garnham 1278 (2), 16 Hardy, Troops, Burt and Son 1268, 17 Mr and Mrs Garnham 1266, 18 Mr and Mrs Clare 1253, 19 Hardy, Troops, Burt and Son 1252, 20 Mr and Mrs B Garnham 1251.

Result of the Futurity Race held in conjunction with the Perth race was:
1 Mr and Mrs PG Clare (buyer), Allen Hall (breeder), 2 Social Pigeon Centre Social Syndicate and Hall and Seabourne; 3 R Knight and Family and the late Carlo Napolitano (Royal lofts), 4 Mr and Mrs B Garnham and Mr and Mrs O King and Sons, 5 Social Pigeon Centre Social Syndicate and Mr and Mrs R Skinner, 6 John Platt and Mr and Mrs Skinner; 7 Hardy Troops, Burt and Son, both buyer and breeder.

Upsall and Frost clock Dunbar fastest bird

There was another tough battle against a strong wind for pigeons competing in Sunday’s race from Dunbar when the fastest bird into Boston was to the loft of Carl Upsall and Trevor Frost to win in Boston Central RPC.

Had this bird been entered in the North Road Championship Club’s young bird race from the same race-point, it would have taken fourth open. As it was, the honour of being the first Boston fancier in this race fell to Marek Kula, second in Boston Central. Veteran fanciers, Ted and Val Attwater, were the winners in Boston and District FC, denying Ray Knight and family yet another 1-2-3.

Club results from Dunbar were:

Boston Central (6-160): 1 Upsall and Frost 1123; 2 Marek Kula 1122; 3 Upsall and Frost 1082; 4 Marek Kula 1081; 5 and 6 Upsall and Frost 1076 and 1070; 7 and 8 Marek Kula 1069 and 1063.465; 9 Upsall and Frost 1063.026; 10, 11 and 12 D Pelka 1054, 1037 and 1034.

Boston and District RPC (6-155): 1 Mr and Mrs E Attwater 1116; 2, 3 and 4 Mr and Mrs R Knight and Family 1107, 1087.927 and 1087.685; 5 Mr and Mrs R Skinner 1068; 6 Hardy, Troops, Burt and Son 1063; 7 D Peters and Son 1061; 8 Mr and Mrs Skinner 1058; 9 Hardy, Troops, Burt and Son 1042; 10 D Peters and Son 1031; 11 and 12 Mr and Mrs B Garnham 1008.930 and 1008.600.

Alford: 1 Perry and Hunt 1147; 2 Mr and Mrs D Evans 1136; 3 and 4 Perry and Hunt 1129 and 1124; 5 Mr and Mrs PG Clare 1092; 6 Mr and Mrs Evans 1080; 7 and 8 Mr and Mrs Clare 1066 and 1065; 9 Mr and Mrs Evans 1062; 10 Perry and Hunt 1052; 11 Sears and Bartle 1050; 12 Mr and Mrs D Thomas 1043.

The final race of the season will be on Saturday when Boston and District Flying Club will be organising a young bird open race from Perth, marking at their Rasen’s Court, Pen Street, headquarters on Friday from 8.30am to 11.00am.

Report for September 4

Knight is race king with a third 1-2-3 feat

Pigeons competing in the 200-mile young bird race from Berwick on Saturday were put to the test by a stiff south-westerly wind, but that did not stop Ray Knight and family, of Old Leake, from completing a 1-2-3 in Boston and District FC for the third successive week.

There was also another win for Marek Kula in Boston Central RPC where, all season, there has been an intense battle for honours, usually featuring Marek, Dariusz Pelka, Upsall and Frost and Andrew Kirkman. Again all four lofts featured prominently in the results.

Report for August 28

Ray is the main man again

Contrary things, racing pigeons! Last week, when competing from Whitley Bay in what was thought to be good flying conditions, they did not perform well into Boston.

At the weekend, in a repeat race from Whitley Bay, when weather was of concern to fanciers, they performed much more consistently. Again, man of the moment, was Ray Knight, of Old Leake, who repeated the previous week’s feat of taking the first three places in Boston and District FC, while Polish fancier Marek Kula won the Boston Central RPC, from fellow countryman, Dariusz Pelek. In fact, these two dominated the race, Andrew Kirkman and Tim Appleby being the only other two to feature in the first 12.

Results from Whitley Bay:

Boston and District FC (10-128): 1, 2 and 3 R Knight and Family 1583, 1545.679 and 1545.385, 4, 5 and 6 Mr and Mrs B Garnham 1524, 1487 and 1485, 7 Mr and Mrs E Attwater 1458, 8 and 9 Hardy, Troops, Burt and Son 1443.723 and 1443.597, 10 and 11 Mr and Mrs Attwater 1429 and 1421, 12 C Collins and Son 1404.

Slow race returns puzzle pigeon fanciers

Local pigeon fanciers are still puzzled why, on a day that seemed perfect for racing, their birds made such hard work of Saturday’s 150-mile race from Whitley Bay. Returns were slower than expected and, in some cases, erratic.

Ray Knight and family, of Old Leake, were the star performers of the weekend when they finished 1-2-3 in Boston District club, but the fastest birds in the area were those of the Sears and Bartle partnership in the Alford club.

Results from Whitley Bay:

Boston and District (11-282): 1, 2 and 3 R Knight and Family 1267, 1266 and 1264, 4 Mr and Mrs E Attwater 1236, 5 and 6 A Newton and Son 1224 and 1214, 7 D Brackenbury 1183, 8 Mr and Mrs R Skinner 1155, 9 Gough and Reed 1150, 10 Mr and Mrs Attwater 1149, 11 Hardy, Troops, Burt and Son 1147, 12 Mr and Mrs R Skinner 1134.

Andrew emerges as Aycliffe race victor

Andrew Kirkman, of Butterwick, was the winner of Boston Central Racing Pigeon Club’s highly competitive race from Newton Aycliffe on Saturday, with near neighbours, Mr and Mrs Brian Garnham in second place. The in-form lofts of Marek Kula, Upsall and Frost, and Dariusz Pelka, all featured prominently. Dariusz, unfortunately, was denied, by an error in the report, the credit he deserved for having the fastest bird in town last week, and, indeed, winning the strong Peterborough and District Federation for the second time in the first three weeks of the young bird season.

Results from Newton Aycliffe:

Boston Central RPC (12-404): 1 Andrew Kirkman 1408, 2 Mr and Mrs Brian Garnham 1403, 3, 4 and 5 Marek Kula 1390 and 1389.950 (2), 6 Upsall and Frost 1385, 7 and 8 Dariusz Pelka 1383.913 and 1383.207, 9 Upsall and Frost 1375, 10 Terry Appleby and Dtr 1373, 11 D Pelka 1371, 12 A Kirkman 1369.

Poles putting pressure on established names

Two Polish members of Boston Central Racing Pigeon Club are keeping the established stars on their toes this summer.

Marek Kula has been a winner in the past and featured in the result at 10th and 11th in the third young bird race from Bubwith. But it is his young colleague, and interpreter, D Pelka who is setting the pace. He won Saturday’s race and was also third, fourth, ninth and 12th. Squeezing into second place was last week’s winning partnership of Carl Upsall and Trevor Frost.

The fastest pigeon into Boston, however, was the one that won Boston and District Flying Club, and belonged to Russ and Denise Skinner – also first past the post last week.

The race should have been from Newton Aycliffe, but bad weather on Saturday in the north of the country dictated the decision to make it from a shorter distance.

Club results from Bubwith III were:

Boston and District (8-188): 1 and 2 Mr and Mrs R Skinner 1328 and 1327, 3 Mr and Mrs B Garnham 1305, 4 Hardy, Troops, Burt and Son 1298, 5 Mr ad Mrs Garnham 1286, 6 Gough and Reed 1225, 7 Mr and Mrs E Attwater 1198, 8 Mr and Mrs R Skinner 1179, 9 and 10 Hardy, Troops, Burt and Son 1177 and 1175, 11 and 12 R Knight and Family 1141.651 (2).

Boston Central RPC (12-358): 1 D Pelka 1329, 2 Upsall and Frost 1326, 3 and 4 D Pelka 1322 and 1320, 5, 6 and 7 Mr and Mrs B Garnham 1288, 1287 and 1284, 8 G and C Edwards 1238, 9 D Pelka 1214.656, 10 and 11 Marek Kula 1214.182  and 1213, 12 D Pelka 1212.

Horncastle (4-64): 1, 2, 3 and 4 R Hayes 1224, 1164, 1161 and 1140, 5 Mr and Mrs Hobson 1131, 6 and 7 R Quibell 1067 and 940, 8 T and F Kennedy 933.

Alford: 1 Perry and Hunt 1265, 2 and 3 Mr and Mrs D Evans 1223 and 1217, 4 and 5 Perry and Hunt 1206 (2), 6 Mr and Mrs Evans 1185, 7 Sears and Bartle 1180, 8 Barker and Kingswood 1173, 9 T and B Moore 1173, 10 Sears and Bartle 1169, 11 and 12 Mr and Mrs Thomas 1168 and 1167.

Skegness and District: 1 Mr and Mrs R Boulton 1236, 2 and 3 M Sharpe 1221 and 1220, 4 Mr and Mrs Boulton 1219, 5 M Sharpe 1176, 6 G Balderston 1175, 7 Mr and Mrs Boulton 1165, 8 and 9 G Balderston 1146 and 1135, 10 R Lancaster 1102.

*****

Previously, local pigeon fanciers competed with the North Road Championship Club in the longest race of the season – 550 miles from Saxa Vord – and acquitted themselves well. The race was won by Dave Fox, of Norwich, with an amazing velocity of 2063 yards per minute, and locals who will be well placed in the final result are Mr and Mrs Geoff Clare, formerly of Old Leake and now of Sloothby, Dave Brackenbury, Mr and Mrs Brian Garnham (who had three birds arrive together), Carl Upsall and Trevor Frost, Mr and Mrs Russ Skinner, and Andrew Kirkman, all of Boston.

Also on Saturday, the young bird season started with a race from Bubwith, and club results were:

Boston and District FC: 1 Hardy, Troops, Burt and Son 1758, 2 Mr and Mrs E Attwater 1675, 3 Hardy, Troops, Burt and Son 1673, 4 J McFadyen 1577, 5 and 6 Mr and Mrs E Attwater 1440 and 1439, 7, 8 and 9 A Newton and Son 1376 (2) and 1347, 10 Hardy and Troops 1331, 11 and 12 J McFadyen 1273 and 1215.

Report for July 3

Weather problems force race delay

Biggest race of the season for local racing pigeon fanciers was from Lerwick, in the Shetland Islands, and liberation was delayed until Tuesday because of bad weather. Conditions were good for much of this 500-mile plus race, but at the home end the weather was unkind, with heavy storms proving a hazard to this Blue Riband event organised by the North Road Championship Club. Outright winners were Mr and Mrs Tony Richardson, of Newark, but Boston fanciers – particularly Mr and Mrs Russ Skinner and Mr and Mrs Brian Garnham – will feature prominently in the finalised result.

Local club results from Lerwick were:

Boston fanciers among lofty placings

Hardy and Burt lead way from Bay

Top team performance into Boston on Saturday when pigeon fanciers were competing from Whitley Bay was by the partnership of John Hardy and John Burt who took the first three places in Boston and District Flying Club.

But, just when it was thought this was the fastest into town, it turned out that it was not. Partnership hits winning groove

The Boston pigeon racing partnership of Carl Upsall and Trevor Frost is in the winning groove again now that the national races are here. They had the first bird into Boston on Saturday (excluding Boston and District club results) when competing in the North Road Championship Club’s race from Perth.

Because of the strong west, south-west wind, the race was, however, dominated by fanciers from Louth and East Lincolnshire, the winning bird flying to the loft of Burtons and Collins in Louth.

Horror as predator strikes on race day

The harsh reality of pigeon racing in the current era hit home to a local fancier on Saturday. As he was waiting for his birds to arrive home from the race from Newton Aycliffe, he received a telephone call to tell him that one of his entries had been found dead. The caller had witnessed a peregrine falcon attack on a batch of pigeons just north of the liberation point, picked up the pigeon that had been killed, read its identification marks and contacted the owner. What happened to the rest of birds terrified by this ordeal is unknown, but it is likely that many will have been lost.

Those that avoided these now frequent attacks, faced a stiff south-west wind on the way home. Boston winners were Upsall and Frost, for the second successive week (Boston Central) and Dave Brackenbury (Boston District). Fastest bird into the area, and likely Federation winner, belonged to Frank and Ann Tasker, of Wainfleet.

Results from Newton Aycliffe:

Boston Central (12-304): 1 Upsall and Frost 1266, 2 Tim Appleby 1259, 3 and 4 Upsall and Frost 1233 and 1218, 5, 6, 7 and 8 Tim Appleby 1216.758, 1216.11 (2) and 1211, 9 and 10 Upsall and Frost 1209 and 1207.670, 11 Marek Kula 1207.360, 12 Tim Appleby 1200.

Husband and wife pigeon racing partnership, Mr and Mrs Steve Poulter, from the small Swineshead club, took advantage of the favourable strong east wind, to set the pace from Newton Aycliffe on Saturday. Their yearling hen bird was the fastest among the entry from local clubs, and now the Poulters must wait to see the position earned in the widespread Peterborough and District Federation. Next fastest was a bird belonging to Polish fancier, Marek Kula, competing with Boston Central RPC, while internationally successful racer, Darren Peters, of East Heckington, took the first three places in Boston and District FC.

Russell Hayes, fresh from winning the Peterborough Federation the previous week, was first in the Horncastle club for the third successive week. First two places in the strong Alford club went to Mr and Mrs Dave Evans who were so successful in last year’s North Road Championship Club young bird national.
