Summer 2006

Reports round-up by league press secretary DEBBIE WINROW

The new winter season sees 15 teams in the league. A change in format means a five-week fixture list providing teams with plenty of opportunity to move up or down sections depending on points accumulated. This format is designed to provide teams with more varied games and increase their competitive edge on the excellent facilities provided at Kirton Middlecott sports centre.

April 26:

The winter netball season is now over and the last results are in. So the various league positions have been decided and the trophies won. All will be revealed on the presentation night Friday July 13 (hopefully lucky for some).

The Summer League starts next week May 3 at Boston High School 7pm. The format is different to the winter with two leagues and a handicap system. There are two new teams to the league from Pilgrim Hospital so we welcome them. Anyone wishing to try their hand at netball (even if you have not played since school — if you loved it then you still will now) is welcome to come along to watch and/or partake. Individuals or teams always welcome.

March 15:

D Birds 32 (players’ player award, Nikki)
Endeavours B 11 (players’ player award, Vanessa Droy)
D Birds took the lead during the first half and dominated the game. Endeavours found the match difficult as they have just been promoted into league two and D Birds have just come down from league one.

Donington Ladies 30 (players’ player award, Tanya Holstead, C)
TAZ 18 (players’ player award, Lisa Goodley)
This was a fast-paced game to start with, but one that slowed down towards the end of the second half. Donington dominated the whole game especially the shooting and they led 10-1 at quarter-time, 16-3 at half-time and 22-11 at three-quarter time. TAZ fought back in the third quarter nearly matching the goals scored, but with such a sizeable deficit, they were unable to fully catch up.

Boston B 18 (players’ player award, Chloe Loftus)
BHS Blacks 12 (players’ player award, Demi Topliss)
A scrappy game from both teams with not that many successful goal attempts. Boston took the lead and continued to increase it. BHS fought hard and matched their rivals’ goal scoring in the third quarter but could not retrieve the deficit.

BHS Blue 16 (players’ player award, Emily Brader)

BHS Yellow 14 (players’ player award, Natalie Ruck)
After the first quarter the score was 0-0 with mistakes from both sides. Blues picked up in the second quarter to gain a good 7-3 lead. Yellows fought hard and almost gained even goals after three quarters to lead 10-9. Yellows continued to make the passes count but could not hold on.

Boston A 20 (players’ player award, Hayley Pycock)
BHS Reds 14 (players’ player award, Steph Rance)
Boston started players short giving Reds a quarter time lead 5-3. Boston returned to full strength for the second quarter and turned the game around. Boston continued to dominate despite BHS’s best efforts.

Endeavours A 15 (players’ player award, Laura Kitchen)

Gems A 7 (players’ player award, Ellen McGarel)
At half time Endeavours had an 8-4 lead and were defending well. It was a good, even game but Endeavours’ shooters were on top form, giving them a convincing win.

March 8:

It’s all systems go for the start of new round of action in the netball league with some teams on the up-and-down move based on positions attained in the latest round of competition (tables featured immediately below). Going up are BHS Reds into Division One while Endeavours B climb Division Two. D Birds drop down into Division Two while BHS Blues descend into Division Three.

March 1:

Next week is the last fixture in this round of fixtures, so points are important at this stage. The weather has improved and the league competition has had half-term off. So everyone is now raring to go.

Boston A 29 (players’ player award, Lynne Evans)

D Birds 14 (players’ player award, Marie Pratt)
Both teams played well and were evenly matched for the first quarter. Boston A pulled away with strong play in the second quarter. The D Birds were persistent and roughly matched goals in the third quarter and the fourth part of the match but were unable to catch up their rivals’ second quarter lead.

Gems I 26 (players’ player award, Frankie)

Shooting Stars 12 (players’ player award, Vicky Kemp)
Both teams played well with Gems taking a small lead in the first quarter. Their strong play resulted in a sound lead in the second quarter despite Shooting Stars making great efforts. Gems continued to go from strength to strength, resulting in a comfortable lead. Shooting Stars battled in the last quarter and caught a few goals up but could not win.

Donington 27 (players’ player award, Tanya)

BHS Blues 9 (players’ player award, GK)
Both teams started well but Donington went from strength to strength, building on a comfortable lead gained by strong play in the second quarter.

TAZ 15 (players’ player award, Bridie Middleton)

Gems II 11 (players’ player award, Hannah Coates)
No match report available.

BHS Black 25 (players’ player award, Cally Rogers WD)

Boston B 5 (players’ player award, Nikki Pratt WD)
The game got off to a quick start with BHS gaining an early lead. Both teams produced accurate passing but the BHS shooting standard was high leaving them with a half-time lead. BHS continued to pick up their game with Boston B always trying in vain to catch up.

Endeavours B 24 (players’ player award, Karen Johnson)

BHS Yellows 13 (players’ player award, Amy Harrison)
A very tight first quarter ended a tie at 5-5. Both teams working hard to keep passing accurate and all shooters on form gave Endeavours a good lead at the end of the second. The much-improved Yellow team gained goals back using their speed and agility against the tiring Endeavours in the third but couldn’t quite catch up. The fourth quarter saw Endeavours pull away with renewed energy despite the Yellows putting up an excellent fight.

February 15:

After several weeks of missed games due to weather the league is back on track. After a break for half term it will be nearly time to change around again and it is all to play for.

Endeavours B 22 (players’ player, Vanessa Droy)
Boston B 18 (players’ player, Carli)
Quick passing and accurate shooting gave Endeavours a slight lead at half time by a margin of 10-5. In the third quarter Boston B fought back well and went close to drawing level. The tall Endeavours defence made life difficult for the Boston
B shooters. In the final quarter Boston worked hard and nearly caught up.

Gems I 20 (players’ player, Fiona Nixon)
D Birds 2 (players’ player, Marie Pratt)
Despite only playing with six players until the last quarter when they dropped to five, Gems still turned in an outstanding display. The D Birds battled well, but simply just couldn’t keep up.

TAZ 19 (players’ player, Vicki Wallis)
BHS Blue 2 (players’ player, Jenni Booth)
In cold and blustery conditions TAZ gained a good half time lead of 7-0. BHS Blue then made some great long shots ensuring they scored a couple of goals. TAZ continued to take control of the game making it impossible for BHS to come
back.

BHS Red 24 (players’ player, Sarah Clarke)
Gems II 16 (players’ player, Laura Grant)
Gems II worked incredibly hard especially in defence. But the fast passing and superior athleticism of BHS was just too much for them on the night.

BHS Yellow 17
BHS Black 10
Yellows took the lead early in the game and held on to it all the way through. Blacks fought back but the game was scrappy and they were unable to make any real inroads on the Yellows’ lead.

February 1:

February 1 matches

Boston A 25 (players’ player, Emily Gurton)

Endeavours A 19 (players’ player, Sarah Bierly)
Boston took the lead in the first quarter and although Endeavours worked hard, they were unable to score. During the second and third quarters, Endeavours made up for it with several goals. But they were still unable to catch up fully.

Shooting Stars 25 (players’ player, Natalie Grimer)

D Birds 9 (players’ player, Marie Pratt)
Shooting stars played well and took the lead in the first quarter. The D Birds played competitively but Shooting Stars kept netting important goals to end up convincing winners

TAZ 28 (players’ player, Laura Paton)

Donington 20 (players’ player, H Coats)
After the first quarter Donington led 6-4 by virtue of showing good attacking skills.
Donington made good passes in the second quarter while all the time TAZ proved good opposition .In the third quarter Donington still led but TAZ were putting up a good fight. In the last quarter TAZ took the lead with Donington still passing well but but they were unable to catch up.

BHS Reds 21 (players’ player, Jenny Booth)

BHS BlueS 2 (players’ player Sophie Keogh)
Reds led decisively for virtually the whole match. The fixture proved tough competition for the Blues who managed to net two goals against a Reds side who proved too good to match.

Endeavours B 25 (players’ player, Jane Hudson)

Boston B 15 (players’ player, GA)

BHS Blacks 14 (players’ player, Demi Topliss)

BHS Yellow 10 (players’ player, Kate Baxter)

January 11:

It is all change again for teams in the leagues. D Birds and BHS Blues will both be moving up while Donington Ladies and TAZ have a drop to lower status in prospect for the next five weeks. Match action is now awaited in the revised three sections.

Endeavours A 14 (players’ player award, Michelle)

League One
Boston A 26 (players’ player award, Sam Pell)
Shooting Stars 8 (players’ player award, Val Morey)

League Two

TAS 11 (players’ player award, V Cooper)
Gems II (players’ player award, Jo Heckford)
Both teams started well but Gems II took the initial lead. It was not long before TAS fought back in the second quarter to take the lead. Both shooters had plenty of opportunities from centre court but not all attempts were consistent. This led to a frequent change in the lead. The score was tight with both teams fighting hard to hold the lead for spells. The scores finish even 11-11 after a good game from all.

BHS Reds 17 (players’ player award, Steph Rance)
D Birds 13 (players’ player award, Laura Burton)

League Three
BHS Blue 16

BHS Yellow 9 (players’ player award, Katie Baxter)

The younger Yellow team started well and took the lead. But it wasn’t long before the Blues got it together and play improved. Excellent shooting from Blue then gave them the advantage. The Yellows’ centre court players worked hard to give their shooters chances. But the Blues’ defence was tight and tall, leaving the Yellow shooters with a tough task to catch up. The Blues’ lead increased, giving them a 16-9 win. A well played game on both sides.

BHS Blacks 15 (players’ player award, Katie Fairweather)

Boston B 10 (players’ player award, Joyce Scott)

December 7:

League Two

Gems II 9 (players’ player award, Jo Heckford)

Endeavours B 3 (players’ player award, Jenny Briley)
This was a really tight game to start with as both sides found the scoring touch elusive. All attempts to score were hampered by the windy conditions. The second quarter was still quite tight but Gems carved out more scoring chances. The second half led to Gems gradually pulling ahead to the win.

League Three
Boston B 11 (players’ player award, J Scott)

BHS Blues 11 (players’ player award, Dani Carter)
Excellent shooting from Emily Brader of BHS gave them a first quarter lead. Boston responded with strong circle defensive work. Half-time arrived with the scores even, but then BHS pulled into a four-goal lead going into the last quarter. But Boston responded to end with a well-fought draw.

BHS Yellow 25 (players’ player award, Katie Baxter)

BHS Black 10 (players’ player award, Cally Rogers)
BHS Yellows showed good shooting skills and BHS Blacks improved their play to try to counter attack. Yellows stayed consistent and in the third quarter the Blacks really improved, but it was all too late to catch up.

November 23:

League Two

Gems II 20 (players’ player award, Sadie James)
BHS Reds 11 (players’ player award, Toni Pratt)
Both teams were very evenly matched for most of the game, but the Gems’ defence battled hard to keep ahead by fending off BHS Reds attacks. Half-time saw the Gems just pulling away with a three-goal lead. And they kept up the momentum to eventually win 20-11.

League Three
Endeavours B 21 (players’ player award, Jess Wilkinson)
BHS Blacks 11 (players’ player award, Lucy Bradley)
Both teams figured in a close-fought first half with Endeavours B leading 9-6 at half-time. The second half was well defended by BHS Blacks but the superior passing skills of the Endeavours attack shone through, giving them an exciting win

League One
Shooting Stars 13 (players’ player award, Jess Brader)

Endeavours A 10 (players’ player award, Becky Barker)
Shooting Stars led early on thanks to some outstanding shooting from Jess West to lead 5-2 in the first quarter. The second quarter saw accuracy dropping for the Stars and Endeavours played well to pull back to 7-9. Both teams played
well, leading to fewer goals in the second half. But Shooting Stars kept the lead.

Gems I 21

TAS 15
Gems started a player short and TAS set off well with the first goal. Gems caught up, but hard play and fantastic shooting from Mandy Stocks left the score 4-4 at quarter time. Gems started the next quarter well with more dominant play
but the shooters just couldn’t hit the net. However they did “get their eye in” and started to cash in on their attacking work with some good goals. Half-time was 9-6 to Gems. Gems continued to dominate play with TAS still working hard.

November 16:

League Three
Endeavours B 30 (players’ player award, Jane Hudson)
BHS Yellow 6 (players’ player award, GA)
Endeavours made a good start by showing strength throughout, with their shooters very accurate. BHS tried hard and made some good moves, but a wet ball and cold fingers led to chances being lost. Endeavours’ experience and height gave them the advantage over the faster youngsters. BHS fought hard and did not give up and, encouraged by “cheer leading” dads, finished with smiles on their faces.

League Two
Donington 22 (players’ player award, Sandy Smith)
BHS Red 8 (players’ player award, Sarah Clarke)
Both teams had even possession in the first quarter with Donington managing a 2-1 lead. Donington’s players created good space around the court an managed to get some telling passes into the circle. Half-time score was 10-3 to Donington. BHS had some good shots at goal but couldn’t catch the Dons.

League One
Gems A 28
Endeavours A 13

November 9:

League Two

Gems II 24 (players’ player award, Jo Heckford)
Boston B 9 (players’ player award, Joyce Scott)
Gems II made good, structured passes with Boston also getting into space well. Gems were more dominant in the second quarter, resulting in a stable score with Boston successfully collecting the rebounds. The third quarter gave Gems the opportunity to pull ahead as they allowed Boston only to score two goals. Gems’ determination paid off despite good play from Boston

League Three
BHS Blues 14 (players’ player award, Elouise)
BHS Blacks 11 (players’ player award, Demi Topliss)
A one-sided first quarter saw the Blues have the majority of possession and they moved play well across the court. The Blacks were struggling to gain possession and didn’t take advantage of the chances they created. The Blacks improved as time passed making the end result close. It was a good effort by all.

November 2:

League Two
BHS Reds 20 (players’ player award, Sophie Koe)
Boston B 7 players’ player award, Nikki Pratt)
Reds had most of the possession in the first quarter, taking the lead in the process. The second quarter was a bit scrappy but also more even. Reds pull away, although long balls into the circle let them down somewhat. Boston, despite being a player short, battled well but the Reds retained their advantage to pull out a good lead and win.

League Three
Endeavours B 26 (players’ player award, Elaine Roberts)
BHS Blue 9 (players’ player award, Emily Brader)
BHS made a positive start by defending well. But Endeavours fought hard to take the lead. Endeavours stepped up the game and dominated as time went on with BHS making a good effort and gaining a few goals back. But their reply wasn’t enough to gain the win.

BHS u14s 19 (players’ player award, Ashley Frankish)
BHS u16s 11 (players’ player award, Demi Topliss)
The under-14s showed good shooting skills to have a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Good use of space and passing from both teams saw the match ebb and flow but the under-16s showed good marking skills. The u14s’ shooting was good and they had a 14-6 lead going into the last quarter. The u16s upped their game to pull back to the final score but just could not conquer the younger girls.

October 26:

No matches, half term holidays

October 19 matches:

7pm games

League Two
Donington 37 (players’ player award, Anna Hodgson, GS)
Boston B 7 (players’ player award, Katie Beeson, GK)
Having been demoted a league, Donington showed their skill and experience to take an early lead in the first half. And they continued to clock up the goals despite Boston trying hard to intercept the ball.

League Three
BHS U16 21
BHS U14 17
The U14s took an early lead but the U16s pulled back with determination to lead. Towards half-time the U14s retook the lead but both teams worked hard and it was evens at half-time. The second half was still closely fought with both teams working well in both attack and defence. The U16s went on to prove just the stronger.

League One
Boston A 25 (players’ player award, J Warren)
TAS 11 (players’ player award, L Brader)
In the first quarter TAS took the lead with Boston starting to catch up but not taking over. The control and accuracy deteriorated on both sides but by the third quarter Boston A gained the lead. The improved play continued and Boston took the win.

8pm games

League One
Gems 32
Shooting Stars 12

A well balanced first quarter with goal for goal play and lots of energy. Shooting Stars started the second quarter with a full team and fought hard but Gems took a dominant lead and played the game their way and pulled out a significant win.

League Two
D Birds 21 (players’ player award, Marie Pratt)
BHS U16s 17 (players’ player award, Katy Fairweather)

League Three
Endeavours B 26 (players’ player award, Jane Hutson)
BHS U15s 9 (players’ player award, Danni Carter)

October 12 matches:

7pm games

League One
Gems 23 (players’ player award, Eliza Hall)
Donington 9 (players’ player award, Laura Patton)
Donington got off to a good start after steady play from both sides. There was also good defensive work from both sides that thwarted several goal attempts. In the second quarter Gems showed good attacking work and their defence managed to hold off their rivals. Donington continued to play well and attacked hard, but good moving and accurate shooting
in the Gems circle gave them the lead in the third quarter. They then continued the scoring to end up with a good victory.

League Two

TAS (final score not known, players’ player, Mandy Stocks)
beat D Birds (players’ player award, Laura Brunton)
There was a close start to this game with both teams playing well. But TAS led 5-3 after the first quarter. TAS pulled
away and D Birds couldn’t keep up the same sort of pace as TAS stretched their lead to 12-5. D Birds defended well and tried hard but TAS still pulled away with a 21-8 lead after the third quarter. TAS’s determination and pressure caused D Birds to make mistakes in their accuracy of passes and went on to record a good win, although exact details of the final scoreline are not known.

League Three

Boston B 18

BHS U16 7
Fast and strong work was seen from both teams, notably with good defensive work by BHS. The second quarter brought good shooting from Boston B and more good defence from BHS. Boston B led 5-3. The third quarter started in a speedy mode with accurate shooting and good attacking from Boston giving them a 12-5 lead. BHS fought well and managed
to score two goals but their defence could not keep up with Boston’s better attacking work.

8pm games

League Three
Endeavours A 16

BHS Shooting Stars 13
There was an evenly contested first quarter from both teams with good passing and attacking work by each side. Endeavours opened a slight lead at 5-3. Good passing and plenty of enthusiasm across centre court still left Endeavours 12-8 ahead. Shooting Stars then moved up a gear but an injury cut the quarter short. The match continued to
be well fought and Shooting Stars started to pull back a few goals. But time eventually ran out for them.

League Two
Gems II 24 (players’ player award, Fiona Nixon)
Endeavours B 7 (players’ player award, Jenny Briley)
Both teams started well with few errors in evidence. But Gems’ strong attack gave them a 6-1 lead. Gems maintained their attacking work and also defending well only to allow Endeavours only three goals in the opening stages. Gems had the advantage in the third quarter due to Endeavours’ shooter Elaine sustaining a suspected broken finger. Gems led
20-4 and then continued to pull away despite good all-round efforts from the Endeavours team.

Changing times ahead

The first round of fixtures is now all completed. So it is now all change with teams moving up and down the league tables.

Those on the move up are: TAS into League One and Boston B into League Two. Going down are Donington into League Two and Endeavours B into League Three. There will be another reshuffle in five weeks’ time. So it is all to play for once again.

October 5 matches:

7pm games

League One

Gems 27 (players’ player award, Eliza Hall)
Boston A 12 (players’ player award, Jane Welsh)
Both teams started off well and the scores were fairly even in the opening stages. But then Gems started pushing up and took the lead. The game came to an end with Gems still in front after good performances from both sides.

League Two
BHS U16 11 (players’ player award, Danni Frankish)
Gems II 8 (players’ player award, Kate Belcher)
There was a close first quarter to this game, but things were somewhat scrappy due to the court being wet under foot. Scores remained close but Gems II dominated a low-scoring first quarter that ended 1-1. Gems continued to dominate with a 5-1 lead going into the last quarter. However, a change of shooter and a pick up in pace gave BHS the win in the last quarter when they recovered in excellent fashion.

League Three
BHS U15 Blue 25 (players’ player award, Holly Chance)
BHS U16 Black 2 (players’ player award, Brogan Brinkman)
In a match-up of BHS teams, the U15s took the lead in the first quarter and continued to score well. The U16s fought hard but just could not catch up.

8pm games

League One
BHS U18 11 (players’ player award, Natalie Grimer GD)
Donington Ladies 10 (players’ player award, Julie Ogilvie)
Donington started with just six players due to an injury that luckily was short-lived. There was excellent defensive work from both teams. Dons were in the lead after the second quarter 8-4. BHS pitched up in the third quarter with some excellent goals with the Dons defending well. The last quarter started 8-8 and went end to end with BHS gaining advantage at the last whistle.

League Two
TAS 17 (players’ player award, Hannah Coates)
Endeavours B 8 (players’ player award, Nessa Droy)
This was a fast-paced game with TAS leading the first quarter 4-0. Endeavours fought back with three goals to end second quarter 8-3 ahead. The third quarter saw both teams working hard and defending well. This play continued till the end but TAS kept the upper hand all the way despite Endeavours’ efforts.

League Three
Boston B 22 (players’ player award, N Pratt)
BHS U15 10 (players’ player award, Ellouise Middleton)
Both teams played really well but Boston B sustained the lead throughout the match. There was some good defensive work by BHS, though.

September 28 matches:

7pm games

League One
Gems 32 (players’ player award, Fiona Nixon, GA)

BHS Shooting Stars 4 (players’ player award, Lauren West, C)

Shooting Stars passed well at times and their defence did a grand job. Unfortunately for them, Gems’ passing was extremely accurate. And combined with strong and fantastic shooting, it gave them the win.

League Two
TAS 14 (players’ player award, Katie Brooks)
Gems II 12 (players’ player, Bridie)

TAS started well and led into the second quarter. Gems II defended well but still trailed at the end of the first half by two goals. Some gritty play by both teams resulted in the scores being level at three-quarters time. TAS worked well as a team with good defence and accurate shooting. Despite Gems II fighting back with accurate passing, they just couldn’t quite catch up.

League Three
BHS Under-15s 12
BHS U16 Blacks 10

A strong start was made by both teams with the U15s having more possession as well as intercepting passes well. The Under-16s did not give up and showed good determination in trying to reach all passes. Goal opportunities arose at a fast and furious pace with the U15s nudging ahead to take the win. This was a good confidence booster for the younger girls.

8pm games

League One
Boston A 34 (players’ player award, Hayley Pycot)
Endeavours   11 (players’ player award, Michelle Whiting)

Boston A started well, although it was close until they pulled away towards half-time. A serious injury to Laura Kitchen, the Endeavours GA in the third quarter left them with only six players. Boston A used the advantage well. And despite fighting well, Endeavours were left trailing.

League Two
D-Birds 15 (players’ player award, Laura B)

BHS U16 Red 22 (players’ player award, Tash T)

This was a well-paced game of two teams showing accurate passing. D-Birds led by two goals going into the second quarter but BHS led by three goals entering the third quarter. BHS then held their lead thanks to some accurate passes
and good shooting. It was a lovely-tempered game on both sides and a joy to watch.

League Three

Despite Endeavours finally managing to get seven players on their team, their competitive approach could not catch the D Birds.
