2006 REPORTS ROUND-UP

November/December 2006

Boston West Golf Centre has played host to a clutch of women’s competitions during the past few weeks.

First up, June McLennan landed top honours in the November stableford Her score of 34 points, two ahead of runner-up Barbara Vipond.

Meanwhile, there was a good turn-out for the first round of the club’s winter league contest. The foursomes competition finished with Hannah Edmunds and Ann Creasey on 34 points and Millie Miles and Val Aspland also on 34 points. All four players now take half their scores through to the next round, which will be played on January 14.

There was an order from the club captain for players to don red headwear for the Christmas “bring and win” contest. Several entrants wore Santa hats for the nine-hole Texas scramble competition. Conditions were windy but this did not prevent some excellent play. The winning team of Rachel Gedney, Betty Gedney, Cherith Needham and Adria Brandon finished with a nett score of 24. Back in the clubhouse, the intense rivalry continued with a Christmas quiz, Val Aspland, Ann Creasey and Jenny Hunt winning with a score of 33 points.

To add to the fun, several rounds of the game giant Jenga were played before the day was finished off with the traditional Christmas meal.

The scores for the golf and quiz were combined and the overall winning team was Tracey Harrison, Herlinde Cunningham and Shirley Stevenson. And finally, Angie Chilvers played consistently to gain an emphatic win in the December medal with a score of nett 74. Julie Brereton was runner-up with a nett 83.

Juniors section

The junior team from Boston West Golf Club tackled their counterparts from Kenwick Park Golf Club in the Lincolnshire League final, a match contested at Boston Golf Club. And it proved a tight encounter with the end result being 1½-1½ over a format of three better-ball matches played in handicap order. Each side gained one victory while the third match was halved. But unluckily from a Boston West perspective, the overall outcome went to a countback decider of holes won and lost. And Kenwick Park gained the ultimate verdict. Players representing Boston West were Paul Thomas, Josh Edmunds, Adam Keogh, Dan Rowland, Lee Drury and Patrick Kelly. In addition, mention also goes to Josh Van Haren and Lee Melton who had been part of the club’s junior squad that tackled matches in the earlier rounds of the competition. Elsewhere on the club’s junior front, Lee Drury, Adam Keogh and Dan Rowland will represent Lincolnshire in the English Junior Club Championships, to be played over two days at Woodhall Spa on October 21 and 22.

On a windy cool day at Belton Woods Hotel they played off against teams from Blankney, Thorney Lakes and Greetham Valley. The team now goes forward to play against the winners of the North Lincolnshire leagues next month at Boston Golf Club.
