July 2007 Coupland among Open Championship stars Boston Golf Club member David Coupland flew the flag for the town with a fair degree of pride as an amateur competitor in the 136th Open Championship at Carnoustie. He failed to make the half-way cut, but still performed creditably on a testing course to finish with an 11-over-par total. Twenty-one-year-old Coupland earned his place in the Open via winning one of the three qualification rounds at Monifieth, his feat including a round of 65. After that success, Coupland said: “This is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. It’s the first time I’ve tried to qualify and even though I came through the regionals, I still wasn’t expecting anything here.” His two rounds at Carnoustie (+8 and +3) saw him teamed in three-balls with US Ryder Cup ace Vaughn Taylor and Aussie ace Peter Fowler. Reflecting on his involvement, Coupland said: “It was a bit nerve-racking in the first round, but it was a great thrill to play in what is the biggest major event in the world. In the second round I tried to relax a bit more and enjoyed the whole experience.” |
