reduction of 11 shots (36 down to 25). Elsewhere around the region, ladies section members from
Boston Golf Club have enjoyed considerable success. Pam Clare came first in
the North Shore betterball contest while the team of Liz Harris, Barbara
Leatherland, Jane Marriott and Pam King finished runners-up in an am-am event
at Blankney Golf Club. In the veterans’ competition at Louth Golf Club,
Barbara Lennox and Jane Bratley finished first while Shirley Greswell and

In the 12-and-under category, success went to Becky Smith ahead of Nicky Frost and Callum Bastock. The final section was for juniors getting their first experience of a golf course. Hall-Jones (35). Jane Bratley (nett 71) won the Nora Royle Trophy on a countback from

July
2006 Ladies’ section July was a busy time for the ladies section at Boston
Golf Club. The Dunhill Islands Trophy was the first of several contests
during the month, a competition won by Yvonne Wright who triumphed on
countback with 38 points from Barbara Unwin and Pam King who both gained 37
points. The Cancer Relief event was won by Jackie Buckton with a
score of 38 points to take the Jan Miller Trophy from Yvonne Wright on
countback with Pam Betts in third spot on 37 points, also on countback from
Pam King with the same total. In conjunction with this event, a raffle raised
£200 for Macmillan Nurses. Later in the month, Liz Harris dropped just three shots
to win the monthly medal with a nett 64. Marita Jordan was second nett 71. Lady president Barbara Holgate entertained golfers and
friends to a wonderful programme of events on her designated afternoon. The
overall winner was Catherine Isaac with 40 points; silver, 1 Jane Bratley 39

nearest the pin on the 14th, Barbara Moor. Yvonne Wright (+3) won the Skene Shield, a feat which
again saw her reducing her handicap. Jean Markham was second on -1. Some 112
ladies from all over the county enjoyed the open day despite the intense
heat. The winners came from Canwick GC posting a score of 46 points in the
guise of Ann Lyon and Janice Craig. Second were Ruth Simpson and Sandie
Fullerton (Lincoln) on 45 points. Third were Caroline Mattock and Cindy
Ireland (Blankney) with 43 points. Fourth came Marita Jordan and Barbara
Unwin on 42 points (countback). Fifth were Jane Bootle and Hope Hopper
(Gedney) 42 points. Sixth were Sylvia Mowbray and Jill Emmerson (Market
Place) on 41 points. Best front nine, Barbara Holgate and Pat Clifton 24
points; best back nine, Hilary Calvert and Ann Wallhead 24 points;
straightest drive on the 17th, Jane Markham; nearest the pin on
the second, Marita Jordan; nearest the pin on the fifth, Barbara Holgate;
nearest the pin on the 14th, Lynda Collins (Tydd St Giles). Six
ladies including Ann Wallhead, who had an eagle at the 11th, collected golf
balls in the twos competition. County Captain’s Day (Central) was hosted by Boston. In
third place were Pam King and Jean Markham (41 points) and in seventh place
were Barbara Holgate and Claire Rylott (40 points) on a countback. Some 120
ladies supported this prestige county event. At Sleaford’s open day, Hilary Calvert and Ann Wallhead
(42 points) took second place. June
2006 Ladies’ section Flaming June certainly lived up to its name for the
ladies section at Boston Golf Club. Claire Rylott won the Cheer Cup nett 74
on a countback from Marita Jordan and Jean Markham. The Texas Scramble is
always a fun game with Barbara Unwin, Marlon Smith and Ann Wallhead winning
with nett 56, closely followed by Angie Whitehead, Jane Marriott and Hilary
Calvert nett 56¾ and in third place Pat Couture, Jackie Buckton and Pam King
nett 58¼. Lydia Allen was the popular winner of the June Frankish
‘Granny’ Trophy with a nett 70, dropping her handicap for the second time in
just over a month. The extra medal was also won by Lydia, second was Jean
Markham nett 71 and third Jackie Buckton nett 73. The monthly medal was won by Ann Wallhead (nett 69) with
Judith Roberts (nett 74) the runner-up and in third place was Rita Knaggs
with a nett 76. Ladies’ Invitation Day was well supported. Results: 1 Marion
Bavin and S Beresford (Belton Park) 44 points (countback), 2 Rita Taylor and
Joan Craft (Belton Park) 44 points, 2 Angie Whitehead and Moira Wilson
(Seacroft) 42 points, 4 Fran Grant and J Smith (Kirton Holme) 41 points, 5
Liz Harris and C Keele (Sleaford) 39 points. Best front nine, Pat Couture and
T Harrison (Boston West) 23 points, best in back nine, Jackie Buckton and N
Parker (Spalding) 20 points, nearest the pin on the second, Norma Parker
(Spalding), on the fifth Joan Craft (Belton Park), on the 14th Jackie Buckton
(Boston). Jackie Buckton was the only lady to have a two, winning five 15
boxes of balls but she only took three boxes! The monthly stableford was won by Chris Sherriff 41
points with Pam King and Pat Brown second and third with 39 points. A cheque for £600 was presented to lady captain Pam Hyde
for her charity chemotherapy refurbishment and equipment at Pilgrim Hospital,
by Dave Phillips for the Ball House Invitation Day. As usual it was a most
enjoyable day with Di Lincoln emerging the winner. Jean Markham won the
Gerald Clifton Cup for the straightest drive and Chris Sherriff won the
longest drive. There were also 13 sectional winners as well as nearest
the pins on the short holes. Finally around the county at Holme Hall the team
of Fran Grant, Jane Bratley, Marita Jordan and Claire Rylott were third. Men’s section Competitions in the men’s section are now being held every Sunday. The
recent dry and sunny weather has helped to bring the greens up to their usual
high standard, giving players no real excuses for missing those short putts!
Junior section The summer season is now getting into full swing at Boston Golf Club. And officials welcomed the news that local business Porcher Abrasives Coatings Ltd has become the new sponsors for the junior section and team. First up was the British Heart Foundation qualifier, the
format being teams of three with best two scores to count, with the top two
teams going through to the regional final at Belton Woods at a later date. The Boston team of Aaron Ashberry, Sam Dawson and James
Hodgson came a creditable second with 79 points just being beaten by De Lisle
Science College of Loughborough with 84 points. But the round of the day
belonged to Aaron who shot a gross 71. Next on the agenda was the Peterborough Milton Junior
Open, again for teams of three, this time all three to count. The Boston team
gave a good account this time consisting of Lee Beeson, Zach Wrisdale and
Jordan Wrisdale, just being pushed out the prizes. But a fourth placed finish
was a good result as two of the players had never played the course before. Three of the younger members of the club have had busy
and successful time recently with Louis Holland Jordon Wrisdale playing in
the HSBC Wee Wonders at Greetham Valley. Louis played well but was beaten by
his club-mate Jordon who now goes through to Birmingham for the regional
final. Billy Spooner has also had a successful time. First he
retained the George Kent Trophy. Playing off the white competition tees he
was the only player to finish under par, a great achievement for an
eight-year old. He then went to his HSBC Wee Wonders qualifier at Red Bourne
where he made it through to his regional final at Harpenden Herts. Billy and
Jordon go in to the next round, where a meeting at St Andrews awaits if both
players are successful. May
2006 Ladies section For the ladies section at Boston Golf Club, the month of
May began with the annual match between the lady president Barbara Holgate’s
team challenging lady captain Pam Hyde’s team. Pam’s team won 5-3. Lydia Allen’s nett 75 won the monthly medal. Second
place went to Kathy Stanley (nett 77) on a countback form Yvonne Wright. In
fourth place was Pam Claire (nett 79). Marita Jordan (36 points), won the stableford on a
countback from Liz Harris. In third place was Di Lincoln on 35 points and
Jane Bratley was fourth with 34 points. Fran Grant won the past captain’s cup on nett 73. Also
played on that day was the ex-medal when Claire Rylott won nett 71, Fran was
second and third was Pat Couture nett 75. The final competition was the Waltz team game won by
Kathy Stanley, Pam King and Catherine Isaac, runners-up Maureen Molson, Kate
Hall-Jones and Barbara Unwin. The successful run in the Mail on Sunday unfortunately
came to an end with the challenge from the Stoke Rochford ladies who won 4-1. News from around the county: Rita
Taylor won the best bronze with a nett 71 at Belton Park. The county
championships at Spalding saw Marita Jordan in fourth place with a nett 80 in
the Butlin Trophy. Fran Grant and Chris Needham won the best nett in the
foursomes 77. Finally at the Newark am-am the team of Fran Grant, Chris
Needham, Jane Bratley and Margaret Hardy took fourth prize with 79 points. April
2006 Men’s section Every spring, golfers look forward to the new growth of
grass on the course and greens to give them that little extra help with their
scores. But this year they have had to wait a bit longer than usual. March was
one of the coldest on record, but the warmer weather has at last arrived and
the course in general and the greens in particular are benefiting from the
new growth. A remarkable standard of golf has already been set with the first
three medal competitions at Boston Golf Club all being won with nett scores
of 66, this is six under par. That was followed by a 10-under-par stableford
round. The junior section goes from strength to strength as two of the men’s
competition have been won by the fast improving youngsters Zac Wrisdale and
James Hodgson. April results round-up: Lombard Qualifier: 1 D.Middleton 66, 2 S Bowman 67, 3 G
Tyler 69, 4 D Ogden 70, 5 R Matson 70. EUG Gold Medal: 1 Z Wrisdale 66, 2 K Marshall 67, 3 A
Wrisdale 68 (father of the winner), 4 F Scrupps 69, 5 G Tyler 70. Anderson Cup: 1 D Carter 66, 2 N Kemp 66, 3 Z Wrisdale
70, 4 S Gray 71, 5 T Miller 72. Hall of Fame Qualifier: 1 J Hodgson 46, 2 D Limb 44, 3 D
Carter 40, 4 W Hunt 39, 5 J Black 38. The first competition of the year for the Rabbits
section was played in far from ideal conditions. Wind and rain were present
to compliment the fact that this competition is played off the white tees to
make it a difficult test of golf for this section. However, the winner I
Wilkinson (41points) and second placed K Marshall (40 points) made light of
the conditions with ever improving James Hodgson 37 in third. G Wilkinson and
M.Dean were fourth and fifth respectively. Easter Monday saw an excellent turnout of 19 teams of
four players for the mixed team am/am event. In this format the better score from each lady and gent
are added together to give a team score. Winning teams were: 1 G Tempest, C
Sherriff, D Worthington, A Worthington 75, 2 M Hyde, P Hyde, D Dawson, M
Jordan 73, 3 P Eastgate, J Young, B Carter, H Calvert 72, 4 R Hardy, M Hardy, R Needham, C Needham
72, 5 E Markham, J Markham, T King, P
King 71. Probably the hardest form of golf is foursomes. This is
where two players use the same ball hitting it alternately. Add to that the
extra dimension of the team being made up of one male and one lady and the
results can be explosive (at times). The winners of this year’s Morley Cup
competition were in complete unison as they won it by the proverbial country
mile: 1 M Jordan, D Dawson 65, 2 A Squires, B Newark 71.5, 3 N and J
Woodcock 72.5, 4 P and M Hyde 75,
5 C Issac D Carter 75.5. Ladies section The ladies’ section am-am contest at Boston Golf Club
was won by Pat Clifton, Pam King and Jean Markham with a score of 81 points.
In second place were Fran Grant, Jane Bratley and Pam Clare on 76 points
closely followed by Pam Hyde, Kate Hall-Jones and Claire Rylott with 75
points. Heavy rain almost caused the April medal to be a
washout. However, two ladies braved the conditions. Marita Jordan won nett 85
with Christa Schueler the runner-up. The Peugeot Coronation Twosomes was won by Hilary
Calvert and Ann Wallhead with 42 points and will represent the club in the
regional finals during the summer. Ann Hodgson and Barbara Moor were second with
37 points and in third place were Chris Needham and Shirley Greswell with 34
points. Ann Wallhead won the flag competition with two shots to
go up the first hole again. Her nett 70 made her the Volvo qualifier winner,
hopefully good enough to go forward to the regional rounds. Maureen Moldon
was second in the flag contest putting her ball in the hole on the 18th.
Jackie Buckton was third with her last shot going into the pond on the 18th. The third round of the Mail on Sunday event against Tydd
St Giles was won 4-1 by Boston. The team will now play the fourth round away
to Stoke Rochford early in May. The Winter Eclectic was won by Ann Wallhead. Margaret Hardy was second in the over-70s division in
the county veterans at Sleaford. Liz Harris was fifth in the high bronze
division with a nett 77. March
2006 The ladies section at Boston Golf Club contested three
months of competitions mainly as roll-ups at the start of 2006. This was
except for medals contests (when the weather permitted) and stablefords. Claire Rylott won the January stableford with 35 points.
Runner-up was Jane Marriott on a countback with 34 points from Jean Markham. The February medal, played under trying conditions, was
won by Jane Bratley (nett 83) on a countback from Margaret Hardy. Hilary
Calvert (with 31 points) won the stableford with Jean Markham as runner-up
with 30 points. At the beginning of March, a fun greensomes was played
over 14 holes. Pam Hyde and Barbara Unwin won with 27 points. In second place
were Jean Markham and Pam King (24 points) and in third place were Grace
Eller and Ishbel Garden on 22 points. The two club and putter was won by Jean
Markham with 28 points with Pat Brown in second place with 27 points on a
countback form Claire Rylott. Ann Hodgson won the March stableford with 30
points played over 16 holes. Jean Markham was the runner-up with 30 points on
a countback. In third place also on a countback was Pam Hyde with 29 points
from Lydia Allen. The winter league finals resulted in a win for Nicola Green and Marita Jordan from Jo Burden and Kate Hall-Jones. ***** After six months of autumn and winter weather the final
of the winter league at Boston Golf Club has at last been completed. This
competition is not for the faint-hearted. In October, a total of 65 hopeful
pairings began the quest to be crowned winter champions. The contest is played out once each month except
February and each pair is allowed to throw away their worst score. Eventually the most consistent pairing
comes to the fore and this year they were Dan Rowland and Adam Keogh. Second
were David Carter and Ben Hinson. Third were club champion Joe Reynolds and
Adrian Wrisdale. Fourth were David Dawson and Peter Pearson and fifth were
Dave Cartwright and Dave Richardson. Sunday March 19 saw the first of the qualifying
competitions, the Reynolds Cup. The qualifiers progress to a knockout stage
in matchplay pairs. The winners of the qualifying stage were the club captain
Eddie Markham ably assisted by the ever improving Brian Marriott posting a
remarkable score of 45 points. Other winners over the past few months also deserve a
mention. The October pairs betterball was won by D Coupland and M
B Skinner. November’s Texas Scramble success went to G Woodcock, J Woodcock,
M B Skinner and S Bowman. A Wrisdale and J Reynolds won the November round of
the winter league. The November stableford went to A Hayes. December am/am glory went to R Whitley, R Reed, N Timby
and C Ashton. The December winter league victory went to R Whitley and P
Timby. December’s Boozy Do honours went to R Smith. A Malkinson and C Woodcock gained January winter league
success. The February stableford went to S Dawson and P Pearson,
D W Dawson, T Dawson and D Middleton won the same month’s scramble.
February’s betterball success went to T Harris and F Scrupps. Victory in the
March winter league was achieved by R Masters and R Matson. |
