2005 REPORTS ROUND-UP

 

December 2005

 

At the beginning of December the rain cut short (to 10 holes) the ladies section fun competition of high-low combined pairs stableford. Jean Markham and Jean Flynn won with 40 points with Pam Hyde and Ros Martin in second place with 39 points.

 

This was followed with the bring and win, also over 10 holes. Hilary Calvert won with 21 points. Ruth Street was second with 19 points on a countback from Claire Rylott, Jean Markham and Ros Martin.

The monthly medal was won by Jean Markham (nett 75) with Hilary Calvert the runner-up on nett 77.

Finally, December competition came to an end with a team roll-up. Barbara Holgate, Barbara Unwin and Ros Martin won with 70 points with Pam Hyde, Jane Marriott and Hilary Calvert in second place with 68 points.

 

The roll-ups will continue during January and February. Ladies wishing to join in should be at the club for 10.30am on Tuesdays.

 

November 2005

 

Latest results from men’s section competitions at Boston Golf Club are:

 

Texas Scramble (November 6):  1 G Woodcock, J Woodcock, M Skinner, S Bowman 57.5 points, 2  R Whitley, N Timby, C Ashton, R Reed 58.1,  3 D Cartwright, D Richardson, K Marshall, S Foster 58.5.

 

Winter League (November 13):  1 A Wrisdale, J Reynolds on plus 8, 2 D Carter, B Hinson plus 7, 3 R Green, A Green plus 6.

 

Turkey Trot stableford (November 20):  Overall 1   D Cartwright 37 points. Division One,  1 J Hull 36points,  2  N Simpson 34 points,  3 P Pearson 32 points. Division Two, 1   N Newark 35 points,  2  D Richardson 35 points,  3  S Ward 34 points.

 

Boston Golf Club’s ladies’ section roll-ups have proved popular this month, especially the first one in November with 30 ladies taking part. The winners of the Texas Scramble were Jean Markham, Kathy Stanley, Ishbel Garden and Ann Wallhead nett 70. Second place went to Barbara Holgate, Barbara Unwin and Barbara Moor on nett 73.5. Third place went to Chris Sherriff, Liz Harris, Gloria Tryner and Gill Reynolds nett 75.2.

 

Hilary Calvert won the November Medal on a countback from Barbara Moor and Jean Markham, nett 73.

The Waltz followed, one score, two scores, three scores on consecutive holes resulted in Chris Sherriff, Yvonne Wright and Pat Clifton winning with 67 points. Runners-up were Ruth Street, Hilary Calvert and Ros Martin with 66 points and in third place were Pam Hyde, Maureen Molson and Liz Harris with 65 points.

 

Di Lincoln on 39 points won the monthly stableford. Hilary Calvert was second with 35 points on a countback from Rita Knaggs. Jean Markham won the Turkey Trot with 37 points, Hilary Calvert was second with 35 points and Jean Flynn was third with 33 points. Finally a team stableford was won by Pat Couture, Pat Brown and Kathy Stanley with 71 points and in second place Shirley Greswell, Di Lincoln and Hilary Calvert 71 points. The Christmas lunch will be on Friday December 16. Anyone wishing to attend should contact the club.

 

October 2005

 

October results from competitions in the men’s section at Boston Golf Club are as follows:

 

Betterball stableford (October 2):  1 A Wrisdale, J Reynolds 44 points, 2 S Kay, S Bowman 43 points, 3 B Hinson, G Woodcock 43 points.

 

Winter League (October 9):  1 D Coupland, A Spooner, 2 N Tooley, C Stanney, 3 D Carter, B.Hinson all scoring plus 7.

 

Betterball stableford  (October 30):  D Coupland, M Skinner 44 points, 2 R Reed, N.Timby 43 points, 3 D Limb, G Day 42 points.

As is the custom for the first competition in October Boston Golf Club’s lady captain Pam Hyde and her team challenged lady vice-captain Jean Markham and her team to an annual match. This time, vice-captain Jean and her team won.

 

Rita Taylor won the October medal with a nett 71. Runner-up was Pam Hyde (nett 74) and in third place was Claire Rylott (nett 75).

 

The Daily Mail Foursomes winners were Ann Hodgson and Barbara Moor (nett 76½) and they will be the Boston Ladies’ representatives for 2006. Runners-up were Jean Markham and Yvonne Wright (77½).

 

A greensomes stableford with half combined handicaps saw the following results: 1 Kathy Stanley and Pat Clifton 37 points, 2 Jackie Buckton and Kath Yates 36 points, 3 Grace Eller and Isabel Garden 35 points (countback).

 

The final competition for October was the monthly stableford. Winner was Pam Hyde on 33 points. In second place was Ruth Simpson on 31 points. Third place went to Hilary Calvert 29 points on a countback from Barbara Unwin.

 

September 2005

 

As the golfing year draws to a close most of the major competitions have now been contested at Boston Golf club. The major event in the calendar is the club championships. This year has seen both the men’s and ladies’ trophies won by the younger generation and a new course record for the men set in the process.

 

Joe Reynolds carried off the major honour in the men’s section after returning a gross score over two rounds of 138. This included a record score of 67 in his first round. Second place went to scratch player David Coupland with gross 142. Third was new member Dan Rowland with 146 with fast improving Lee Beeson fourth on a score of 152. Jeremy Woodcock kept the senior players in the frame with 154 in fifth place.

 

The Pettit Trophy is played in conjunction with the championship and is for the best single handicapped round of the day. Lee Beeson with nett 66 took the trophy with Joe Reynolds second on 67 and Steve Hodgson third with 68. Darren Rigby was fourth on 68 and consistent Guy Woodcock came fifth with 69.

The 2005 ladies’ champion is Nicola Green who took the title with a gross score of 174. Jean Markham took the nett prize with151.

 

Captain’s day is always a popular affair at the club and this year was no exception with 190 players taking part. This year club captain Malcolm Hyde’s format was a stableford game played off a full handicap. The weather was absolutely perfect for golf and a good score was needed to be in the prizes. The prize winners were as follows: 1 Geoff Willetts 44, 2 Tony Hayes 43, 3 Ian Long 41,4 Lee Beeson 40,5 Martin Lakin 40, 6 Neil Timby 40, 7 Dave Pomfret 39, 8 Andrew Dawson 38, 9 Mark James 38. Best senior was John Allen on 38.  Best rabbit was Ben Edwards on40. Best junior was Euan McClaughlin on 43.

 

Nearest the pin prizess were won by Paul Winrow, Albert Cheung, and Mike Long, Longest Drive Neil Sharp and remarkably Mark Jones managed to use a putter to hit the ball well in excess of 150yards to win the novel “longest putt” competition. In the ladies 12-hole competition the captain’s wife, Pam, managed to keep it in the family by winning with 27 points chased closely by Joan Young on 25 with Jane Marriott third on 24.

 

The nearest the pin prizes were won by Maureen Molsom and Fran Grant with the longest putt of  some 110 yards being won by lady captain Jenny Cowan. Dinner and prize giving followed the competition. 

 

This year also saw the inaugural playing of the left-handed championship event. A total of 12 left-handed competitors played for the engraved crystal tankard. The winner was Nigel Newark with 69 and Jim Davenport was second on 70.

 

August 2005

 

THE Bothamley Bowl was the first competition played in August by the ladies section at Boston Golf Club. It was won by Chris Sherriff 38 points on a countback from Barbara Unwin. In third place was Ann Hodgson 37 points with Claire Rylott 36 points.

 

The Nora Royle Trophy was played in conjunction with the monthly medal. Marita Jordan (nett 70) won both trophy and medal with Yvonne Wright nett 73 as the runner-up.

 

Nicola Green once again is the lady champion taking the gross with rounds of 90 plus 84, 174. Jean Markham won the best nett with rounds of 76 and 75, 151.

 

A total of 40 teams entered the am-am. Results: 1 Marita Jordan, Margaret Hardy, Angie Westby, Ann Dorrian 90 points; 2 Pam Hyde, Ann Hodgson, Barbara Moor, Hazel Marshall 88; 3 P Westwood, J Newhouse, A Creasey, R Cross (Boston West) 87; 4 B Newcombe, M Thorold, G Haydon, M Harrison (Spalding) 86; 5 M Williams, L Cahlin, J Sizer, S Green (Kenwick Park) 85; 6 Jean Markham, Jane Marriott, Barbara Leatherland, Pam King 85. Best front nine, P Brown, P Clare, A Bartlett, P Sturgess (Seacroft) 47 points; best back nine, M Higgins, s Hindell, D Mann, J Brown 44 points. Only four ladies managed to get a two — Angela Whitehead, Claire Rylott, J Slay and S Teanby winning lots of golf balls!

 

Lady president Margaret Hardy was most generous on her afternoon. The winner of the Presidents Tray was Jane Marriott with 40 points. The other ladies in the prizes were: Silver 0-20, 1 Barbara Unwin 38 points; 2 Kate Hall-Jones 34 (cb); 3 Pam Hyde 34. Bronze 21-25, 1 Yvonne Wright 35 points; 2 Rita Taylor 34 (cb); 3 Marion Smith 34 (cb). Bronze 26-30, 1 Marion Bavin 40 points; 2 Catherine Isaac 38; 3 Jean Flynn 32. Longest drive silver (ninth), Barbara Unwin; bronze (13th), Marion Smith. Nearest pin, (second), Yvonne Wright; (fifth), Barbara Unwin; (14th), Shirley Greswell. Best back nine, 17 pts, Joyce Black; front nine, 20 pts, Hilary Calvert.

 

Yvonne Wright with39 points won the monthly stableford. In second place was Ruth Street on 36 points. Third was Pam Hyde on 35 points on a countback from Chris Needham.

 

“Hidden partners” was the fun competition to end the month’s competitions. Ishbel Garden and Maureen Moldon won with 64 points on a countback from Marion Bavin and Hazel Marshall.

 

Around the county, Boston ladies were also in the prizes. Claire Rylott was fourth (41 points) at Woodhall Spa invitation day and at Gainsborough invitation day Marina Reed was third with 47 points. Margaret Hardy and Jane Bratley won the fourball betterball at Retford with 43 points. Chris Needham and Jane Bratley were second at Sherwood, Rita Taylor was sixth at Belton invitation day and Jane Bratley third at Seacroft invitation day with 40 points.
