Report for match played on Thursday May 11 Dixie Deane Memorial Cup Duke of York 5, Napoleon Sunday 5 (Napoleon win 5-3 on penalties) The curtain came down on the 2005-2006 Boston Sunday
League season with what must rank as possibly the best and most enthralling
encounters seen at local level. Ten goals were shared between the Duke of
York and Napoleon Sunday over 120 minutes in the final of the Dixie Deane
Memorial Cup. And then came a penalty shoot-out decider with Napoleon
eventually lifting the coveted prize. Napoleon Sunday, though, didn’t know what had hit them
in the opening stages when an attack-minded
Duke of York hit them for three goals in the first 45. And they could
have had more! Ben Parkinson hit their first after some neat passing on the
left side had opened up the Nap defence, Jason Vaughan uncharacteristically
making a mistake to allow the scorer to slot home coolly from just inside the
box. Rob Marsden doubled their lead 15 minutes later before Gav Bell drilled
in a low cross which rebounded into the back of the goal off a stunned Ricky
Lovelace. The Duke were menacing throughout the first half,
constantly pressurising the Nap – Andy Brown and Jamie Kuhn playing some
excellent football. And both had chances to increase further the scoreline. A
wake-up call at half-time did the trick for the Nap as they came out the
stronger. And within five minutes they had pulled one back through Matt Price
following a blitz on the Duke’s goal. With the Nap going all-guns-blazing,
the Duke were restricted to counter attacks. And with lightning pace up
front, they were still creating chances. And for the spectators, all bets were
on as to who would score next. And it was the Duke’s Rob Marsden who smashed
the ball home from 20 yards to restore his side’s three-goal advantage. The Nap lads showed some great character and commitment
as they fashioned one of the great comebacks with goals from Ty Fravigar and
Lee Orrey hauling them back into the game at 4-3. And just two minutes before
the final whistle the Nap drew level — a Matt Price free-kick found Paul
Alexander who headed home to take the game into extra time. The Nap were the slowest starters in the extra time
period and the Duke made them pay in only the second minute with Luke
Brittain firing home — how the Duke must have been wishing that the ‘golden
goal’ still counted as they struggled to hang on to their slender lead. Five
minutes from the end saw some great work by Nap captain Fravigar found Orrey
who was brought down in the box. Mark
Wakefield made no mistake from the spot to make it 5-5. And with time running
out the dreaded penalty strikes loomed. The Nap won the toss and elected to go first — Paul
Alexander making no mistake. The
Duke’s Gav Bell took his turn only to blast the ball against the crossbar.
And the miss proved costly as Pete Sutton, Mark Thompson and Paul Vaughan all
firing home for the Nap with Andy Brown, Jamie Kuhn and Rob Marsden all
netting in reply for the Duke. A
tense finish saw Mark Wakefield step up to take the all-important final
attempt for the Nap — and to the heartache of the Duke team he made no
mistake to clinch the league and cup double for the Nap and give them
back-to-back wins in the competition.
The Duke could only reflect ruefully on what might have
been after such a gallant effort — a real treat for all the spectators at
Wyberton’s Causeway ground. Jamie Kuhn deservedly received the man of the
match award. Duke of York: North, Sylvester, Richardson,
Dawson, Wilkinson, Brown, Bell, Kuhn, Marsden, Crunkhorn, Parkinson. Subs:
Perkins, Brittain, Skinner. Napoleon Sunday: Lovelace, J Vaughan, Chand,
Price, P Vaughan, Murphy, Sutton, Medina, Fravigar, Orrey, Alexander. Subs: Wakefield, Thomspon. |

Report for match played on Sunday May 7 Sharman Burgess Sunday Cup Magnet Tavern have netted cup glory in the league’s most
prestigious knockout competition. They defeated Lord Nelson 5-0 in a match
more closely contested than the final scoreline arguably portrays. The Nelson
saw a welcome return of former regular players and certainly gave Magnet a
run for their money. The Nelson had slightly the better of exchanges in the
first half, pressing forward at every opportunity. And they would surely have
scored if it had not been for some strong clearances from Andy Stukins. In turn, the Nelson defence had a strong
first half denying Magnet an early lead. Midway through the half Michael
Bradley limped off and the Magnet cranked up their game, scoring 10 minutes
before the break. A collision between Sanderson and Bell gifted Chris Rutt
with the opening goal — the keeper bravely carrying on and only realising
later that he had fractured his ankle! In the second half both teams again
came out fighting but the Magnet’s strength and experience began to take over
— speedy Richard Stukins sprinted forward to score two superb identical goals, both being fired home into the top far
corner, giving Bell no chance. He had the chance to complete his hat trick
soon after as the Magnet had won a penalty, but saw Bell dive down to his
left to save it. Man of the match Dan Fenwick headed home to make it 4-0 and
Stukins eventually grabbed his hat trick with 15 minutes to go. Mick Brader
expertly controlled the game with both teams complimenting him and his
assistants. Lord Nelson: P Bell, N White, S Wiseman, S
Brown, M Bradley, J Rutherford, B Newton, L Sanderson, J Britton, D Elding, B
Barnes Subs: P Doughty, M De Viva. Magnet Tavern: A Stukins, C Hollyoake, B
Chapman, D Fenwick, S Dawson, S Green, R Murphy, J Reeson, R Stukins, L
