Report for matches played on Sunday January 29 Sharman Burgess Sunday Cup The game of the day in the competition was contested
between Park Avenue Athletic and Lord Nelson. The Nelson came away as victors. Park were missing four regular players through injury but took
nothing away from the strong Nelson side. Paul Barker fired the home side
into the lead but it was the Nelly who went in at half-time with a 2-1
lead. The Nelson came back strongly
after going a goal down and equalised through a thunderbolt from Jimmy
Britton and strike partner Brendan Barnes after a mazy run. In the second
half Nelson increased the lead to 4-1 thanks to another two goals from
Britton to complete his hat trick. But then Park hit back with two goals.
First James Hardy netted. Then Park were then awarded a penalty and Danny
Keal stepped up but blasted wide.
Keal then made amends for the miss. In a muddy centre he carried the
ball forward fully 20 yards skilfully bypassing the Nelson defenders and
firing home in spectacular style. The
Nelson were in determined mood, though, and after re-grouping they scored
again through John Boy Rutherford to secure progress through to the
semi-finals on a 5-3 scoreline.
Referee Mick Brader had an excellent game in the middle. It looked like there could have been a shock on the
cards for the Napoleon when Boston
College went 1-0 up after 20 minutes through Dean Seiner. It took more time
for the Nap to settle down into their rhythm. But after the goal the home side stepped up a gear and soon
equalised with a Mark Lovelace strike.
Gavin Marshall should have put the Nap 2-1 up but failed to hit the
target and the score remained at 1-1 until the second half. Both sides were guilty of missing chances
in the second period until good work by Matt Price found Lovers who rounded
the keeper for his second goal. The
Vaughan brothers took control in the midfield and it was good play from them
that led to the third goal as Paul Vaughan found Lovers in the six-yard area
— and he made no mistake to fire home.
The game was well controlled by Helen Fulcher-Ward. The other two games were postponed due to frozen
pitches. The league’s officials have now re-arranged the cup games for next
week, causing an adjustment to the fixtures for next weekend as well. Workforce Unlimited Division One The New Castle moved into second place in the table
with a convincing 10-0 victory over Lincoln Lane. Michael Gardner put the
visitors in front after five minutes with a well-taken goal but Lane put the
Castle under pressure and Dowse made an important save before Kev Bushell
made it 2-0 with a spectacular overhead kick. Then Jamie Hicks made it 3-0 with a long-range rocket. The home side were reduced to 10 men through
a handball offence and Michael Gardner scoring from the spot to give the
Castle a 4-0 half-time lead. The
second half was all one-way traffic, Dave Willis made it 5-0 when scoring
from close range. Kev Bushell made it 6-0 with a powerful header from a
Gardner corner. Stacey Ruck hit the
seventh before the outstanding Wayne Beeson netted a hat-trick to complete
the rout. |

Report for matches played on Sunday January 22 Workforce Unlimited Premier Division In their game against Duke of York, it was lowly Park
Avenue who had the ball in the net first through Simon Collins — only to be
ruled offside. The game turned in
favour of the Duke. A defensive blunder by Park led to Andy Brown opening the
score on the half hour and a second goal from Gav Bell followed on the stroke
of half time, slotting into an empty net after rounding the keeper. Straight
from the re-start another error allowed Bell to complete his brace when latching
on to a loose ball and making no mistake when firing home. Ten minutes later
and it was 4-0 with Daley Richardson scoring his first for the club. Then, at last, some joy for Athletic as
substitute Matthew Bates’ precision pass found Danny Keal. He cut the ball
back for Paul Barker to score, but almost immediately Duke netted their fifth
and Richardson his second. It followed a fine run down the wing and ended
when he cut inside to smash the ball home.
Danny Keal scored Park’s second after some good work from Callum
McDonald. But Andy Brown rounded off
the scoring making it six before the final whistle. Ben Parkinson had a fine
game for the Duke in the middle of the park with most of the play coming
through him. Nortoft bounced back from their heavy defeat of last
week being on the right side of a 5-2 scoreline against Golden Lion — earning
them their first league win of the season.
The first half was a close affair with Nortoft’s defence in sterling
form reducing the Lions to long-range efforts — but on two occasions the
Lions did score courtesy of Nick Bishop and Richard Wightman. Nortoft hit
back through a Marcus Chester tap-in and a Jason Osborne penalty to go in at
half time level pegging. After the
break, Nortoft stunned the Golden Lion with further strikes from Chester and
Dave Donohoe. Osborne also converted
a second penalty later on in the game. Napoleon consolidated their lead at the top of the division with a 4-1 win over Boston College. Mark Wakefield and Peter Sutton scored a goal apiece in the first 45 minutes to give the visitors a 2-0 half time lead. New signing Sutton completed his brace after the break and substitue Lovas Laszlo also found the back of the net. Richard Borrill hit College’s consolation goal in a game that was dominated by the league leaders. The Magnet were unable to field a team for their game
against Lord Nelson – only able to field six on the day! Workforce Unlimited Division One Britannia Rangers lost more ground on leaders Star Inn
(Sibsey) following their 2-2 draw.
Carpenters Arms opened the scoring after 15 minutes when Dex Wilson
latched onto a loose ball and lobbed the keeper. Karl Melton levelled the scores with a brilliant solo effort
before the break and he scored again soon after the restart after some good
team work. The Brit held onto their
lead until the 85th minute — the
Carps deservedly equalising with a goal from sub Sean Walsh that belied his
age! A deft turn in the box giving him the space to slot the ball into the
near corner. The final score was 2-2. The Star Inn (Sibsey) were able to field a stronger team
this week and Lincoln Lane suffered as a result, losing 6-1 — although the scoreline suggests it was
easier than it actually was as the Lane put up a valiant battle! New signing
Glenn Hislop came on in the second half and hit his first hat-trick for the
club and Paul Wroot, Ashley Laurence and Paul Burrell also scored to pile on
the misery for the Lane boys. |

Report for matches played on Sunday January 15 Workforce Unlimited Division One
Britannia Rangers recovered well after falling 2-0
behind in their game against Lincoln Lane. Chris North netted twice within
the first 20 minutes but a spirited comeback led to the home side scoring four
goals to take all three points. Lincoln Lane will be disappointed not to get
at least a point out of the game. Micky Rawson hit two and Kev Manning and
Tom Ratley one apiece for the home side. Ian Brookes completed the Lane’s
scoring from the penalty spot just before the final whistle. In a good tempered game Eagle Harvesters dominated
the first half against Carpenters Arms but had nothing to show for it as the
teams went in level at half time. The Carps restricted the Eagle to long
range efforts. The Eagle took the lead early in the second half, Jamie Lawson
beating his man and drilling a cross into the area only for a Carps player to
turn it into his own net. The Eagle increased their lead when Duncan Browne
fired home after good work from Chris Lawson and Alex Tilley. A defensive and
goalkeeping mix-up allowed the Carps back into the game with Pete Coonan
getting his name on the scoresheet, setting up a tense finish. However, Gary
Ling raced clear and lobbed the keeper to kill off the game for Eagle. The
Carps never gave up and referee Ross Muirhead again had an excellent game. High-flyers the Star Inn (Sibsey) came unstuck
against a solid New Castle side. With the Star struggling for players through
injury and suspension they started the game with only 10 men—mainly of the
mature variety! The Castle attacked confidently and soon took a 2-0 lead and
increased their advantage to 3-0 midway through the first half. The Star
pulled one back from the penalty spot – Paul Burrell converting – with a Castle
defender lucky to only receive a yellow for a blatant foul on his opponent.
An extra veteran arrived just before the break for the Star to make up the
numbers, but the New Castle were too much for the ageing Star players and
they scored three more in the second period to give them a 6-1 victory. Dixie Deane Memorial Cup
The Duke scored three times in the first half
without reply against a unusually lackluster Boston College side. The two
teams were quite evenly matched but the Duke’s superior firepower was the
difference. Andy Brown scored the first two with some good finishing. Next
came Luke Brittain with a solo effort – taking the ball past three players,
he then stumbled but recovered well to slot home. It was 3-0 at half time. In
the second half the College showed more spirit but woeful finishing saw them
only score once through Dan Cole – and this in the 85th
minute. Before that the Duke had
already completed their scoring, Brown completing a hat-trick. Steve Melady
and Nick Sylvester both had a solid game at the back for the Duke. Magnet Tavern were able to field a stronger side
than of late, seeing a welcome return of the Stukins brothers, and they
dominated their game against a weakened Golden Lion side. The Lion started and ended the game with
10 men – even though they managed to increase to 11 men just before the
break. Stuart Beeson hit one either
side of the interval for the home side.
Magnet’s goals came at regular intervals and they ran out convincing
11-2 winners. Scorers were Paul Clarke,
Lee Dakin, Alexandre Silva (2), Richard Stukins (6) and substitute Daniel
Millar scored his first goal for the club as well. A younger, fitter Park Avenue side dominated for the
majority of theit tie against Lord Nelson. Half time came with the visitors
leading 2-0 after defensive lapses by a ragged Nelson back line. First veteran Allan Cochrane beat the
offside trap, latching onto a good through ball from Troy Thomas. The second
goal came when Glen Smith hit a perfect ball into the path of Danny Keal who
made no mistake to slot home. The Nelly later came more into the game,
hitting a post, but they were constantly stretched by the speedy Park
forwards. Philip Bell in the Nelson goal came to the rescue in numerous
one-on-ones but was unable to keep the Park strikers at bay. Final score was
5-1 in favour of Park Avenue. Danny Keal and substitutes Matthew Bates and
Simon Collins all hit one apiece. Ben Newton scored the Nelson’s only goal of
the game. It seemed just like a stroll in the park
for Napoleon Sunday against strugglers Nortoft. Some good play and hard work saw the Nap put 12 past them. The half-time score was 5-0 and they hit a
further seven after the break. The Nap’s man of the match, Leroy Medina
scored four well-taken goals. Full credit to Nortoft as they made a couple of
inspired runs down the flank, but poor finishing let them down. Nap’s other
scorers were Mark Wakefield, Steven Murphy, Lovas Laszlo, Ty Fravigar (with a
wicked corner shot that curled just inside the far post), Paul Vaughan (2)
and Mark Lovelace (2). |

Report for matches played on Sunday January 8 Lincs Sunday Cup The opening games of the New Year in the Boston Sunday
League contain a mixed bag of goodies — the pick of them being round four of the
Lincs Sunday Cup. Here, last season’s beaten finalists Fabrenco (defeated by
Magnet Tavern on that occasion) were again conquered by a Boston side. This time it was Napoleon Sunday who went through to the
quarter-finals with a narrow 3-2 victory which took until the last five
minutes of extra time to secure! The home side started brightly enough by
opening the scoring within two minutes of the game kicking off. Lee Orrey rounded the keeper to score. But
in a seesaw first half the visitors equalised soon after following some poor
defending. Within 10 minutes both teams had won and converted
penalties — with no arguments from either side. Jack Smith scored for the home team. Ricky Lovelace got a hand to Fabrenco’s penalty but the pace
saw the ball hit home. Just before the break the visitors were reduced to 10
men through elbow contact as the half ended with the scores level at 2-2. The second half began with the Nap trying to take
advantage of the extra man. But they could not break through a stubborn
Fabrenco defence. Both goalkeepers
were on form, pulling off some fine saves to keep the scores level. Both teams made substitutions to provide fresh legs. But
to no avail. The score remained level
and extra time began. The Nap began to pile on the pressure but poor finishing
let them down while Medina came close and Laszlo saw his shot turned away. It
looked like penalties were beckoning — and indeed one duly arrived. Orrey
went down in a heap — a bit too easily for the referee’s liking. But the ball
still reached the centre of a box where Laszlo was felled and another
spot-kick was awarded. Again, Smith
converted coolly to break Fabrenco’s dreams five minutes from the end. Man in the middle Mick Brader expertly
controlled the game. Napoleon: R Lovelace, J Vaughan, L Christy, M Price, J
Smith, P Vaughan, D Stupple, L Laszlo, T Fravigar, S Lamming, L Orrey.
Subs: L Medina, M Wiltshire The Nap now face a tough away tie against Grimsby outfit
Jubilee Inn, the game to be contested on Sunday February 5. Workforce Unlimited Premier Division Golden Lion thought they had done enough to secure all
three points against Park Avenue — until Danny Keal popped up 10 minutes from
the end to earn the visitors a draw. Park had earlier taken the lead 40 minutes
in, Callum McDonald driving in from a corner only to see the Lions equalise
10 minutes after the break from another corner — this time Andrew Creasey
being the scorer. Soon afterwards,
the Lion took the lead and managed to hold it for a good spell. Close to the end of the game a good through
ball found Paul Barker in a one on one with the Lion keeper who made a great save, only to see the
ball rebound to Keal to grab a share of the points. Workforce Unlimited Division One With their closest contenders being held to a draw, Star
Inn (Sibsey) stretched their lead at the top of the table to seven points —
although they didn’t have it all their own way with Railway playing some good
competitive football. Paul Burrell made no mistake from the penalty spot to
score the only goal in the first 45 minutes.
Railway deservedly equalised soon after the break and Burrell
completed his brace to restore the home side’s lead. David Harker completed the
scoring to seal the 3-1 victory. Young
Richard Thorold took the whistle and received tremendous praise. The New Castle might still be in fourth spot but make no
mistake of their intentions to gain promotion at the first attempt — as they
held second placed Axe and Cleaver to a 1-1 scoreline. Now, a victory from
their game in hand would see them leapfrog over the Axe into the runner-up
position. While the New Castle
started brightly, it was the Axe’s Carl Wall who broke the deadlock after 20
minutes with a great 25-yarder.
Stacey Ruck and Dion Roberts went close for the home side but the half
time score remained at 1-0. The Castle took more control after the
re-start, Pete Cook saving well from
Scott Hutchinson and Michael Gardner.
The home side laid siege to the Axe goal and a Jordan Dixon free kick
set up Hutchinson to score a deserved equaliser. Credit was given to Referee Ross Muirhead who kept a good game
flowing. He in turn praised the two
sides, saying “it was a cracking game and credit to both teams — a draw being
the fair result.” Dixie Deane Memorial Cup Duke of York started their game against Magnet with only
nine players and thought they would be up against it. But they set their stall out as early as 30 seconds
after a through ball found Andy Brown one on one with keeper Barry Kilmore. And he scored with a low
drive. After 15 minutes the Duke saw
two more men join the field of play and they soon got their second goal with
Ben Brittain scoring after a good long run. The Duke were then forced to
withdraw their goalie through injury.
Luke Perkins donned the keeper’s jersey. With no further goals the score at half time was 2-0. The Duke
hit three without reply after the re-start, through Ben Parkinson, Jamie Kuhn
(two, one a penalty). Magnet were
also awarded a penalty and hit home for their consolation goal. After that, though, Andy Brown grabbed two
more to complete a hat-trick and the Magnet saw Kilmore dismissed for
handling outside the box. Stout defending by Nortoft saw them hold off the Lord
Nelson in an ebb-and-flow Dixie Deane tie played at Rosebery Avenue. Nortoft took a two goal lead midway
through the first half after the Nelson rear guard went AWOL — Dean Stevens
in his first game back after eight weeks out with a broken toe hit a header
from a corner and Chris Massingham made it two from just 10 yards out with a
left footed drive. Nelson didn’t sit back, though, despite the deficit and
rained constant pressure on the Nortoft defence. But poor finishing let the
visitors down. They were finally rewarded for their efforts with a fine goal
from youngster Ben Newton and a penalty from Brendan Barnes. But a rare
second half breakaway saw Nortoft pinch the points with an Elton Dobson
header. Workforce Unlimited Shield Carpenters Arms will now face Axe and Cleaver in round
two after defeating Lincoln Lane 5-2 on Sunday. Lincoln Lane started off the
brighter of the two sides and after just two minutes they opened the scoring
through Ian Brookes with a good 25-yard shot. The Carps responded quickly
with a tap-in goal for Dex Wilson after he followed up a Sam Duff shot. Wilson then guided the Carps into a 2-1
lead when he beat one defender and deftly lobbed the oncoming Lane
Keeper. It was soon 3-1 when
“Crazyboy” Chris Marshall flicked in a Kev Woods corner. Five minutes from half time Wilson
completed a first half hat-trick when he rifled home. However the game was not over and just
before the half-time whistle blew, Brookes completed his brace for the home
side with a penalty given for handball.
Lane began the second half 4-2 down and they nearly cut the deficit on
a couple of occasions. But the game was made safe for the Carpenters Arms
when Pete Coonan blasted home after a good exchange between Wilson and Duff
for a final score of 5-2. |
