August 28, 2006 After the conclusion of the 2005-06 season the Boston Sunday League saw the Napoleon Sunday bow out of the fold. They have since amalgamated with the Magnet Tavern for the new campaign that officially gets under way this Sunday (September 3). The arguments for and against the merger may rumble on,
given that they have arguably been the best Sunday League sides in recent
years. However, it is hoped that the combined strength of players may lift
the newly strengthened team onto greater things with the club paying
particular interest to the Lincs Sunday Cup and, for the first time, the FA
Sunday National Cup. After struggling gamely throughout the whole of last
season Premier teams Golden Lion and Nortoft also folded. Again, certain sadness is felt, as both
clubs have been long established Sunday League teams. With the Premier Division losing three teams, Park
Avenue were asked to remain in the top flight despite being relegated and
along with newly promoted sides the Star Inn (Sibsey) and the Newcastle. The
Axe and Cleaver were also proposed to join the higher division. However, the Axe felt that they would not be able to
sustain a team in that division and after a lengthy discussion at the annual
meeting new boys Ship Inn bravely put themselves forward for the Premier —
and were soon drawn in a tough Dixie Deane Memorial Cup group alongside
Boston College, Magnet Tavern and The Mill Inn! The remaining four teams of
Lord Nelson, Park Avenue, The Newcastle and The Star Inn (Sibsey) make up the
second group. Newly promoted Newcastle will be the team to watch this
season — manager Paul Yates has brought in some new signings to strengthen
his squad of last year and his team will certainly not be out of the running
to lift the Premier Division trophy at the first attempt. Just one change of name sees the Duke of
York now named the Mill Inn. In the First Division two new teams are welcomed — Black
Swan of Coningsby and Harchester United. Disappointingly both Lincoln Lane
and another of last term’s newcomers,
Queen of Spades, pulled out of the league following the annual meeting
— leaving just seven teams in what is usually such a competitive division. The Axe and Cleaver and Britannia Rangers will be
looking to battle again for the top places — so close they were to finishing
in the promotion places last season. The Black Swan are made up of mainly
youngsters with one or two more experienced players to guide them on the way
and Harchester are a mix of new players and ones from teams that have folded. With almost 300 players already registered and only one
club who has not yet forwarded registration forms it shows that the players
are out there willing to sign — the league just needs them now to show
commitment to their teams on Sunday mornings! As always, the referee selector will try to ensure that a referee is appointed to as many games as possible. But this cannot always happen so teams are, once again, reminded that they must have whistle, flags and book with them for each game in case they need to provide their own official. |
