Report for matches played on Saturday December 24

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Three

This division had the only match scheduled across the entire Saturday League programme and a 4-1 away victory for Woodhall Spa against Billinghay Athletic Reserves saw the former open up a three-point lead at the top of the table over Kirton Town Reserves who have also played one more game.

Report for matches played on Saturday December 17

Cropley’s Suzuki Premier Division

High-riding Billinghay dropped their first top flight points of the season when they were held to a 2-2 draw in their derby clash against neighbours Coningsby. Lee Croft and Jamie Lawrence scored the Coningsby goals to secure a hard earned point for the home side. Both of the goals scored by reigning champions Billinghay came from Tom Dickinson.

Elsewhere in the top division, Wyberton moved up four places after their 5-1 away win at Swineshead Reserves despite falling behind to an early goal. Wyberton recovered and their fitness and superiority eventually came out on top. The visitors were able to call on the services of three of their Lincolnshire League players due to the   senior side being without a fixture. None of the goals came from the players drafted in, however, as Dean Seiner struck twice while the remaining match-winning efforts came from Russell Murphy, Andy Baker and Chris Rutt. Swineshead’s opener came from former Wyberton player Paul Clarke who finished off a good move from the home side before Wyberton levelled to make the half time scores all square at 1-1. Swineshead had no answer to Wyberton’s deadly finishing after the break and the visitors returned home with maximum points.

Spilsby Town and Skegness Town served up a six-goal derby match at Ancaster Avenue. Goals from Liam Papworth (2), Jordan Wood and Viv Jeffrey saw Spilsby take the honours in a 4-2 victory.

Wrangle United gained three welcome points at the expense of Boston Town Colts. The home side was, once again, without a regular goalkeeper and, on this occasion, Luke Perkins was handed the number one jersey. The stand-in keeper, fortunately, had little to do as the Wrangle rearguard was well marshalled by Ben Parkinson. The solid defensive display secured Wrangle’s first clean sheet of the season while at the other end the home attack looked dangerous at times but found Town keeper Nick Maddison in commanding form. Four times the custodian thwarted Wrangle striker Gavin Bell when faced with one-on-one situations. The Boston keeper was, however, powerless to stop what proved to be the solitary winning goal after 26 minutes. Nick Sylvester delivered a low cross to the edge of the box and Dave Robinson's neat step-over resulted in the ball finding Michael Swain and his low shot found the corner of the net. Final score was 1-0

Cropley’s Suzuki Division One

After Billinghay’s dropped point in the Premier section, Sleaford Town now remain the only club in the whole league to maintain a 100 percent success record. After a goal-less first half against Spilsby Town Reserves, second half strikes from David Arscott, Alex Maddison and Matthew Holdup gave Sleaford a 3-0 home win over their visitors. Spilsby gave a good account of themselves, and looked to be heading for a possible share of the points. But after netting the opening goal 10 minutes after the break with a scrambled effort following a corner, Sleaford’s confidence grew. The second goal was a 30-yard screamer before Spilsby went close to getting back into the game. First, Mark Waters had a low drive superbly tipped round a post and then Anthony Slater saw a deflected lob run down the wrong side of the net. Sleaford clinched victory with a third goal in the final minute when another long range effort flew into the net.

Holbeach Bank and Old Doningtonians produced an entertaining encounter where goals were in plentiful supply. Simon Hall, Jonathan Wheatley and Rob Walker were all on target for Holbeach Bank but it wasn’t enough as Old Dons took maximum points with a 5-3 away win.

Sutterton remain at the foot of the table after a 3-1 home defeat against Swineshead Reserves. Gavin Rhodes grabbed the Sutterton goal.

Unfortunately Old Leake were unable to field a side for their home match against Fishtoft and the likely outcome will be the award of the three points to the visitors.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Two

The huge surprise of the day took place at Rosebery Avenue where league leaders, Westside Rangers came unstuck against lowly Holbeach St Marks. Leading scorer Niall O’Grady was again on target along with Kev Manning but it was all to no avail as St Marks pulled off a surprise victory with three goals to run out 3-2 winners.

West End Tigers responded in positive fashion after the previous week’s defeat as they bounced back in style with a comprehensive home victory against Park Road Old Boys. Ricky Toyer, Nathan Padley and Craig Ardron were restored to the Tigers’ line-up and new signing Dion Roberts was also drafted in for his debut. Nathan Padley opened the scoring for the home side before Park Road levelled shortly afterwards. A blistering spell just before the break, however, saw West End blitz their opponents with a three-goal blast to give them a 4-1 interval lead. Two further goals followed after the break to put the result beyond doubt before Kevin Orton’s red card meant the Tigers had to play out the rest of the game with just 10 men. Man-in-the-middle Terry Knott had no alternative but to dismiss the player for a late challenge. West End’s other scorers were Dion Roberts who struck twice, Jamie Hicks, Spencer Kirk and another from Nathan Padley. Final score was 6-1. Referee Knott had a faultless game in the middle.

Park United also conjured up a fine victory when they entertained Mareham United. Goals from Roberto Junior, Steve Adcock and Aaron Doherty sent Mareham home empty handed after a 3-1 home win.

An Ian Bircumshaw goal earned Black Bull United a point in their 1-1 draw at home against Coningsby Reserves.

At last week’s monthly management committee meeting, Croft United’s request to formally withdraw their reserve side was approved and their past results have now been expunged and the league tables adjusted accordingly. This amounted to seven games that had to be re-adjusted although two of the games had originally been awarded as walkovers because of Croft’s inability to raise a side for Division Two fixtures at Holbeach St. Marks and West End Tigers.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Three

Here, leaders Woodhall Spa United produced a storming second half performance to eventually overpower a plucky Park United Reserves side. The visitors defended superbly during the first period to prevent Woodhall from getting on the scoresheet but once the home side took the lead, the floodgates really opened. Justin Scarborough and Jack Draper both hit hat-tricks in an 8-0 demolition job which was completed with goals from Chris Lovett and George Picker.

Shodfriars went one better, scoring nine in their home trouncing of Wrangle United Reserves. The “smash and grab” partnership of Jimmy Brittain and Paul Alexander was once again  firing on all cylinders as the deadly duo accounted for eight of the goals. Shoddies started well and they soon took the lead through Paul Alexander’s superb strike before skipper, Jimmy Brittain made it 2-0 following a superb run and lob over the helpless keeper and he went onto add two more goals before the break to complete his hat-trick, his fourth treble of the season. The Brittain and Alexander show continued after the break while Craig Spooner weighed in with the other goal. Wrangle’s battling efforts were rewarded with a late consolation goal. Final score was 9-1. Martin Worth and Ben Newton excelled for the Shodfriars side and match referee A Sharrock had a fine game in the middle.

Kirton Town Reserves are still look threatening at the top of the table following their 3-1 home win over Holbeach United Social at Graves Park. Town’s leading scorer Richard Borrill chalked up another two goals while Simon Collins was also on target.

Mareham United Reserves and Old Doningtonians Reserves shared the points in a 2-2 draw. Carl Newcombe and Richard Hall hit the Mareham goals. Conrad Louth struck a hat-trick for East Region School of Sport in a 5-0 away win at Friskney. Vigelio Quessou and Luis Viera were the other scorers for the visitors.

Report for matches played on Saturday December 10

Lincs Junior Cup

Reigning Premier Division champions Billinghay Athletic have reached the quarter-finals of the Lincs Junior Cup where they will now meet Heckington next month. They secured their place in the last eight by defeating the current holders and this season’s favourites, Moulton Harrox.

The visitors found Billinghay   totally focused on the task   and on a difficult playing surface there was only one team “up for it.” Billinghay stormed into a 2-0 half-time lead following goals from Tom Shaw and Pete Dickinson and they wrapped up the tie with another goal from Pete Dickinson. Moulton who were minus the services of two key players and lost their heads a little towards the end of the game and several yellow cards were brandished around.

In the end it was a comfortable 3-0 victory for Billinghay and this was emphasised by the fact that goalkeeper Steve Scott was not forced into any noteworthy action during the entire game. Billinghay are now Boston Saturday League’s last remaining side after Spilsby Town went down 4-2 at Langtoft United.

James Eley Sports Cup

Fishtoft progressed through to the next round with a 4-1 away win at Freiston. Three first half goals put Fishtoft in a commanding position and although Troy Ayton reduced the arrears from the penalty spot 10 minutes into the second half, Fishtoft sealed the match with a fourth 10 minutes later. Freiston missed two golden chances in the last 20 minutes but Fishtoft deservedly went though to the next round.

Cropley’s Suzuki Premier Division

North Sea United and Skegness Town shared the points in a 3-3 draw, although the prison side will be disappointed at not having taken full points after leading 2-0 at half-time. Goals from Steve Hughes and Brian Wheeldon gave North Sea a comfortable interval lead but Skegness fought back to level the scores in the second half thanks to two strikes from Paul Butler. Lee Pickett put the Camp back in front on 70 minutes when Skegness failed to clear a corner before the visitors brought the scores level with an equaliser from Josh Bartlett with 15 minutes remaining. Both sides then had chances to snatch a winner and Skegness had keeper Andy Gilbert to thank for preserving a point with some fine saves.

Kirton Town had an off-day when visited Swineshead going home empty-handed after a 3-0 defeat. Swineshead had some great chances during the first half but were denied on many occasions by a fine display from Kirton keeper, Dean Reynolds. The deadlock was finally broken on the half hour mark when Jack Houghton netted. The second half followed much the same pattern with Houghton adding a second goal with a left foot shot and Paul Clarke rounded off a fine Swineshead move with the third goal 10 minutes from time.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division One

Leaders, Sleaford Town continue to steamroller their way to promotion with another convincing victory, this time at home to Old Leake. Two goals from Matthew Holdup after four and 35 minutes put Town in control and Craig Wells added another before the break. Two further goals in the second half secured a 5-1 victory and another three points as Sleaford’s 100 percent record remained firmly intact.  Billinghay Athletic, in the Premier Division are the only other league side to have an unblemished record. Old Leake’s goal came from Bobby Smith.

Holbeach Bank’s upturn in form continued with another impressive win, this time at home against Tydd St Mary. Nick Cott proved to be the Bank’s saviour with both of his side’s goals during the first half. A single Gareth Burnett goal was enough to secure all three points for Spalding Town in their 1-0 home win over Swineshead Reserves.

Fosdyke entertained promotion hopefuls, Gedney Drove End and after an evenly contested opening period, the first half ended goal-less with home keeper James McCartney helping to preserve his side’s clean sheet with several excellent saves. In the second half Fosdyke enjoyed the wind advantage at their backs and they took the lead with a well taken Andy Brown goal. Gedney finally sprang into life and they struck back with two quick-fire goals inside 10 minutes through Danny Goddard and Johnny Warfield. Andy Brown looked to have grabbed a valuable point for Fosdyke with his second goal of the game before Gedney dealt a hammer blow in injury time when Dave Wilson’s goal snatched victory to record a double over their opponents. Final score was 3-2.

On a   heavy playing surface at Sutterton, visitors Spilsby Town Reserves started brightly and they opened the scoring when Johnny Hannah struck with a low shot after 10 minutes. The visitors were forced to re-organise shortly afterwards when Mark Simmonds went off injured and new signing from Sibsey, Anthony Slater, came on for his debut. The new acquisition wasted no time in getting involved in the action as he went close with a couple of fierce drives. Sutterton got back into the game right on the stroke of half time when the referee awarded a penalty following some pushing from a corner and Gavin Rhodes stepped up to fire home from the spot-kick. Sutterton started well after the break and stand-in keeper, Andy Horton, made two smart saves to keep Spilsby in the game. Spilsby then lost Johnny Maycock, paving the way for Daniel Morris to make a welcome comeback from an injury lay-off and his contribution was instant as his through ball found Dan Vines who drove home into the top corner from 25 yards to put Town back in front. Sutterton’s heads dropped after going behind and Spilsby wrapped up the points with a rather fortunate effort from Dan Vines whose cross-shot sailed into the net. The visitors could have added further goals as Anthony Slater struck a post and Mark Waters squandered three chances when clean through  and only facing the   advancing keeper. Final score 3-1.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Two

West End Tigers’ unbeaten run came to an end against rivals, Westside Rangers at Rosebery Avenue. Rangers took the lead midway through the first half but otherwise both keepers had little to do in a dour opening. Although the Tigers started brightly after the break they suffered a setback when central defender Martin Woods was dismissed following a second yellow card. Rangers then took control and made the extra man advantage count scoring twice more to run out 3-0 winners.

Spalding Harriers snatched victory at Wainfleet United with a 3-2 win. The Harriers had taken a first half lead before Lee Johnson levelled after the break following a Royston Wilkinson cross. Spalding Harriers regained the lead following a penalty and they went 3-1 ahead shortly afterwards. Substitute Rob Perry gave Wainfleet a glimmer of hope when he headed home his side’s second goal but the Harriers held onto the three points.

Basement side Holbeach St Marks held title-chasers, Park Road Old Boys to a 1-1 draw at home. The home side had Steve Potter to thank for their valuable point following his 30th minute opener before Park Road Old Boys saved the day with an 84th minute Ashley Allen strike.

Mareham United kept in touch with the leading pack with a thumping 6-1 home win against Black Bull United. Adam Everitt (2), Ross Trestrail, Michael Johnson, Darren Vinters and Jonathan Seymour were the six-shooters for United.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Three

The two leading sides clashed at Woodhall Spa where Shodfriars were the visitors. And what a game it turned out to be with both sides providing an entertaining 4-4 draw. Shodfriars got off to their customary slow start as Woodhall stormed into a 3-0 lead. Shoddies pulled a goal back before half-time when Ben Newton pounced onto a loose ball before firing home a superb second. After the break the Boston side’s playmaker, John Rutherford started to gain control of the midfield and they soon pulled back another goal when Brendon Barnes ollected a free-kick from Shane Brown before turning and rifling home a superb goal. In-form striker Jimmy Brittain brought Shodfriars level with another fantastic strike when he picked up the ball on the right before driving home a low shot into the bottom corner. All the visitors’ hard work appeared to have been in vain, however, when Woodhall went 4-3 ahead with another fine finish. The best goal of the game was saved for last and it was a real net-burster — as witnessed by both sets of spectators.  Jimmy Brittain was a full 30 yards from goal when he unleashed a thunderous shot which flew into the net off the inside of a post for his second goal of the game. Woodhall’s goalscorers were Jack Draper (2), Reece Maltby and Justin Scarborough. For Shodfriars, Ben Newton was outstanding and referee, Nick Sleaford also had a fine game in the middle.

Kirton Town Reserves remain hot on the heels of the leaders following an 8-1 home win over lowly, Mareham United Reserves. Martin Durrant and Simon Collins both scored hat-tricks while Brian Cox and Karl Louth completed the scoring.

Friskney salvaged a hard earned point in a 3-3 draw at Wrangle United Reserves. Sam Hill scored two of the Friskney goals while Perrie Dale also got on the scoresheet.

Two Daniel Wells’ goals helped Park United to a 3-2 home win over Sibsey. David Gosling was also on target for Park while Sibsey replied through Paul Burrell who scored both of his side’s goals.

Old Doningtonians hit double figures in their home fixture with West Pinchbeck. Pete Lunn hit four of the Old Dons’ goals while Liam Pitts grabbed a hat-trick. The other remaining goals came from Barry Taylor, who scored twice and David Pitts.

Holbeach United Social and Billinghay Atletic Reserves clashed in a bottom of the table affair. Mark Jones and Tom Cherry were Holbeach’s match-winners with the home side’s goals in a 2-1 victory.

Report for matches played on Saturday December 3

Cropley’s Suzuki Premier Division

Boston Town Colts produced a storming fightback at Wyberton to run out 5-2 winners. Wyberton, who were leading 2-0 at the break had to play the second half with just 10 men after having Lathon Millar dismissed just before the interval. Boston Town took full advantage in the second half and they pushed an extra man forward to cause Wyberton problems at the back. Town’s Micky Nuttell, who was without a game in the UCL last Saturday had a run out for the Boston League side and he grabbed two of his team’s goals. Benn Houghton also found plenty of space to score twice while Jamie Sleight completed the scoring. Wyberton’s first half scorers were Lovas Laszlo and Mark Lovelace.

Croft United’s 4-2 victory at Spilsby Town was all the more impressive considering that they were forced to play out two thirds of the game with just 10 men after Jason Barry was shown the red card for a professional foul on the half-hour

mark. The game, as a contest, was virtually over by half-time with Croft leading 4-1 as striker, Lee Orrey ran riot. The ex-Boston Town striker thumped home a quick-fire hat-trick in five minutes to leave Spilsby shell-shocked. A Louis Mill free-kick gave Croft a comfortable three-goal cushion and although Town pulled another goal back after the break, Croft ran out comfortable winners. Jordan Wood scored Spilsby's first half goal from the spot after Jason Barry’s foul.

Wrangle United played much better than the 5-1 defeat suggested when they made the journey to the home of champions, Billinghay Athletic. After conceding an early goal Wrangle hauled their way back into the game when they pounced on a defensive error resulting in Richard Fenwick netting an easy equaliser. Billinghay regained the lead shortly after half time when the unfortunate Rob Griffiths headed into his own net following a corner. United hardly had time to recover from this setback when they were dealt another blow when the home side added goal number three. Wrangle’s confidence now in tatters, dropped their heads and Billinghay scored twice more. Michael Ward and Pete Dickinson both scored twice for the champions while Matthew Tuck also got on the scoresheet for Athletic. Wrangle also had Gavin Bell dismissed with about 10 minutes remaining for a second bookable offence.

Swineshead enjoyed a tidy 6-3 win at North Sea United although the game, as a contest, was over by half-time. The visitors hit an amazing four goals in a blistering eight minute spell just before half-time to leave the prison side with an uphill task in the second half. Chris Hollyoake opened the scoring after 25 minutes when his free-kick found its way into the net under the despairing dive of the keeper. Luke Worley made it 2-0 three minutes later with a shot from 10 yards and Jack Houghton added another two minutes later. It was 4-0 in the 33rd minute when Luke Worley broke clear before chipping the ball over the advancing keeper before North Sea pulled a goal back seven minutes before the break. The Camp gave themselves a glimmer of hope shortly after the break when they knocked the ball home following a goal-keeping error. Worley put an end to any brief hopes North Sea had when he completed his hat-trick just before the hour mark to make the score 5-2. The Camp pulled another goal back after 65 minutes but Worley had the final say when he notched up his fourth goal with some good control and clinical finish to make the final score 6-3. North Sea’s goals came from Rob Masters who scored twice and John Buchanan. Referee Nick Sleaford handled the game well in difficult circumstances.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division One

Holbeach Bank made the headlines when they recorded their first points of the season. Goals from Graeme Hunt, who grabbed a double strike and James Laing secured a 3-2 home victory over fellow-strugglers, Sutterton.

Gedney Drove End hit double figures at Old Leake in a surprise score-line. Gedney started brightly and it was no surprise when they opened the scoring after Joe McKeown’s free-kick found Dave Beerlings at the far post and the recent signing headed home his first goal for the club. Although Old Leake were quick on the break they couldn’t find a way through the Gedney defence and from one of the home side’s raids Gedney’s Steve Gibbs cleared the ball quickly to the lively Dave Wilson who took on the opposing defence before beating the keeper for the second goal. Old Leake clawed themselves back into the game when they capitalised on a mistake in the Gedney defence before the visitors restored their two-goal cushion before the break when Dave Wilson set up Danny Goddard for a simple tap-in. Gedney really turned on the pressure in the second half and Dave Beerlings’ thunderous drive gave The Leake keeper no chance and Danny Goddard conjured up a rare headed goal to make the score 5-1. Joe McKeown made it 6-1 before Old Leake reduced the arrears. Beerlings and Goddard both completed their hat-tricks before Gedney introduced substitutes, Richie Bates and Nick Lee to the action. Both subs combined to allow Lee to score the ninth and the same player added his second and Gedney’s 10th following good work from Wilson. Old Leake’s goals came from Jamie Skinner and Bobby Smith. Fosdyke’s recent good run came to an abrupt end at Old Doningtonians as Chris Wing and Steve Burdall both hit double strikes in an 8-1 home win. The other Dons’ goals came from Scott Hempsall, Danny Goodacre, Steve Holstead and an own goal.

After last weeks scoring bonanza, Tydd St Mary were firmly brought down to earth by league leaders Sleaford Town.

The Saints started the game at a fast pace and were soon causing Sleaford some problems. A great cross in from the right after just 10 minutes was blazed over the bar from six yards by Andy Cooper for the Saints. Sleaford responded and

brought a great one handed save out of Stu Parker in goal for Tydd. Having shaded the first 20 minutes Tydd were then unlucky to go a goal down when a Sleaford player picked the ball up and tucked it away well.  The Saints should have levelled when a cross was drilled into the Sleaford box only for Dan Piccaver to scoop his shot over. This was a signal for Sleaford to apply pressure and they scored again on 25 minutes when a good dink over the back four found a player in space to pass into the bottom right hand corner. It remained 2-0 until half-time and the Saints were unlucky not to be at least on level terms at the break. Tydd came out with all to do in the second half but were rocked when Sleaford scored again after just two minutes to make it 3-0. By now the pitch was starting to take its toll and the long ball was beginning to become a necessity. The Saints had few shots on goal but Sleaford found their fourth and best goal of the game on the hour when a corner from the right was well cleared by the Tydd back four, only to be volleyed into the top right hand corner for a great goal. A fine game well contested and well refereed by Barry Ingham.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Two

Wainfleet United made the long journey to Holbeach St Marks and they returned home with maximum points following a late own goal that gave the visitors a narrow 3-2 victory. Wainfleet opened the scoring after 10 minutes through Michael Parnham and a Phil Simpson goal in the second half put the visitors in control. Lee Johnson also went close to increasing the lead but the striker’s shot came back off a post. St Marks stormed back, however, and they brought the scores level with two quick goals, the equalizer being a stunning effort. The home side looked to have gained some deserved reward for their enterprise until the late body blow left them empty-handed.

Westside Rangers moved back to the top of the table with a 4-3 home win over Park United. Jody Betts hit two of the Rangers goals while Niall O’Grady and Kev Manning were also on target. Park United pushed the leaders all the way and

went close to snatching some reward with goals from Aaron Doherty, Steve Adcock and Alec Richardson. West End Tigers now have games in hand over the leaders after their home game with Freiston was called off due to a waterlogged playing surface. The Tigers did attempt to get the game switched to Freiston’s home ground but their pitch has also suffered recently with the wet weather along with some damage caused to one of the goalmouths.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Three

Friskney gave current leaders, Woodhall Spa United, a stern contest before going down to a 4-2 home defeat. After Woodhall had opened the scoring after 25 minutes, Friskney levelled through a Carl Perkins penalty. The visitors regained the lead just before the break and then made it 3-1 after 46 minutes. Craig Mountain’s header from a Robert Holland corner kept Friskney in the game until Woodhall wrapped up the points with a fourth.

Main Ridge Take Away Reserve Cup

Kirton Town Reserves easily saw off the challenge of Wrangle United Reserves at Graves Park. Richard Borrill grabbed a hat-trick and Simon Collins hit two goals in a 7-1 victory. Cliff Langham and Karl Louth completed the scoring.

Old Doningtonians Reserves from Division Three gave Division One side Spilsby Town Reserves a fright before going out of the competition 3-2. Andy Barnett and Barry Taylor scored the goals for Old Dons in a brave display. Old Dons held a slender 1-0 lead at the half-way stage and their confidence grew as a result of the boost. Spilsby finally equalised when Mark Lyon headed home a Mark Ingram corner. An upset looked on the cards when Old Dons regained the lead and Spilsby looked dead and buried until a last minute equaliser from Dan Vines who headed home, again from a Mark Ingram corner. The visitors were clearly shaken by such a late sickening blow and Spilsby grabbed the all-important winning goal when striker Mark Waters fired home.

The tie between Division One, Swineshead Reserves and Coningsby Reserves from Division Two required extra time to settle the outcome. Swineshead squeezed through to the next round with goals from Lee Hunt, Ashley Brighton, Nathan

Lee-Farrah and an own goal. Final score was 5-3.

Barclays Brokers Willoughby Cup

Before the cup tie at Fishtoft where Mareham United were the visitors, Boston League vice-president Tony Appleby led a minute’s silence in memory of Ken Tidd who died recently. Ken was president of the Willoughby Cup competition, a vice-president of the Boston League and a former secretary of Friskney FC.  His funeral service will be held at Friskney Church at noon on Friday (December 9).

The cup-tie in question ended in a 2-0 away win for Mareham United with goals from Michael Johnson and James Seymour putting the visitors through to the next round.
