The close season saw the unfortunate demise of Holbeach St Marks, a club who had graced the Boston Saturday League for many seasons. The club eventually pulled the plug two weeks ago after a frustrating time during the summer on the player-recruitment front. With only six players signed on and no encouraging signs of potential new players on the horizon the club regrettably decided that there was no possibility of them competing in the new season and they submitted their request to withdraw from the league.

Three other clubs had already decided at the end of the previous campaign that they would be standing down. They were Shodfriars and West Pinchbeck (both from Division Three) and Boston Town Colts (Premier Division). Another club who found themselves without a place in the Saturday League was East Region School of Sport but on this occasion, it was due entirely to their continued flouting of the rule book and subsequent suspensions.

Fortunately new clubs, Nortoft and Marshalls along with new reserve sides from Westside Rangers, Freiston and Wrangle United have boosted the number of participating clubs for the new campaign.

Roger Gell, chairman, opened the annual meeting of the Cropley’s Suzuki Boston and District Saturday Football League by asking everyone in attendance to mark the recent death of John Chappell from Spalding. Before a minute’s silence, league vice-president Tony Appleby reminded the meeting of the hard work done by John on behalf of local football, especially in the Spalding area, which included a long period as the LFA’s delegate to the Football Association.

The roll call found that league champions Billinghay Athletic, along with the team from HMP North Sea Camp, were not in attendance and both clubs will be fined £30. Mark Robinson was presented with the referee of the year award and awards were presented to the leading league goal scorers.

There was a tie in the Premier Division between Paul Butler from Skegness Town and Jordan Wood from Spilsby Town, who had both scored 16 goals. In Division One, Chris Wing from Old Doningtonians won with 23goals and Niall O’Grady from Westside Rangers was the winner in Division Two with 25 goals but the league’s hotshot was to be found in Division Three. Jimmy Brittain, playing for division runners-up Shodfriars, rattled in 47 goals in the league and a further thre goals in the cup competitions saw him record a marvellous half-century.

The league will be making a donation of £350 to the LFA’s Benevolent Fund. allan Gray, secretary of Skegness Town, was elected to the league’s management committee following the decision by Richard Scott to step down. Alf Stones retired as auditor and a presentation of a league tie was made to Alf who continues his 52 years’ service with the league as vice-president.

New reserve teams from Freiston and Westside Rangers were admitted to the league but by just two votes the application by Croft United to re-enter their reserve team was defeated. The team had folded back in November and by, albeit a narrow majority, the other clubs did not want to see them back straight away.

Two new clubs were admitted to the league. Marshalls FC bear the name of their sponsors in Butterwick and Nortoft United FC, based at the Roper’s Arms on Horncastle Road, Boston, carry on the tradition of the long established Sunday League side.

The meeting went on to approve an increase in match fees for referees to £15 along with an increase in their travelling expenses to 25p per mile, bringing the league into line with the County Cup.

Mr Gell expressed his pleasure at this result, as the lague would be competing with the Lincolnshire League for officials. The decision by the Lincolnshire League to revert to junior status from its previously held intermediate status would mean the two leagues were on the same footing and would be attempting to recruit match officials from the same area. It was agree that the season would start on Saturday September 2, ending on May 12 2007.

The league constitution was agreed with the top two division comprising 11 teams each and the lower two divisions being each of 12 teams.

Cropley’s Suzuki Premier Division: Billinghay Athletic, Coningsby, Croft United, Gedney Drove End, Kirton Town, Skegness Town, Sleaford Town, Spilsby Town, Swineshead Institute, Wrangle United, Wyberton.
