Defender Ryan Clarke has become the latest
recruit to the Boston United fold. The 24-year-old has put
pen-to-paper to join the Pilgrims for a second time, following a stint with
the club between 2003 and 2005. Clarke, who lives in Sleaford, had been with
Worcester City (voted their player of the year for last season). But he has
been permitted to move to a club nearer his Lincolnshire base, notably
because of Worcester’s geographical switch to Blue Square South. Clarke’s
signing comes a couple of days after Pilgrims’ boss Tommy Taylor confirmed
that last term’s player of the season Jon Rowan has agreed new terms and
signed on the dotted line for 2008-2009. United’s confirmed squad members for 2008-2009 are:
Chris Wright, Tom Matthews, Matt Bloomer, Ryan Clarke, Liam Green, Wes
Parker, Michael Wood, Stewart Talbot, Kieran Leabon, Jon Rowan and Jon
Froggatt. |

Fri 23 |
Goalkeeper Chris Wright, defender Tom Matthews
plus strikers Jon Froggatt and Kieran Leabon are the latest players to commit
their immediate futures to the Boston United cause. The quartet have all put
pen to paper on contracts for the 2008-2009 season. In addition, last term’s
player of the season Jon Rowan is also expected to agree a new deal shortly.
However, long-serving skipper Paul Ellender is expected to leave the fold
after turning down revised terms. |

Thu 15 |
NEW RECRUIT A first summer signing, confirmation of league status, details of pre-season friendlies and the availability of season tickets for the 2008-2009 campaign have been the outcomes of a busy week at Boston United’s Staffsmart Stadium. First up, manager Tommy Taylor has ended his year-long pursuit of versatile player Wes Parker. The 24-year-old has completed a move from county rivals Gainsborough Trinity almost 12 months after originally being tracked by the Pilgrims. But no deal could be cemented last term because Parker — now a free agent — was previously under contractual obligations at the Northolme. UNITED’S STATUS The Pilgrims have also learned they have been included back in the Blue Square North on allocation processes released by the Football Association. As things stand, six new teams have been allocated to Blue Square North with Droylsden, Farsley Celtic and Stafford Rangers relegated from Blue Square Premier, while Fleetwood Town, Gateshead and King’s Lynn have all been promoted. Hucknall Town have been reprieved from relegation, following the demise of Halifax Town in Blue Square Premier, while Redditch United and Worcester City have been transferred ‘geographically sideways’ to Blue Square South. PRE-SEASON ACTION Elsewhere, United’s programme of pre-season fixtures has been issued. It is as follows: Saturday July 12, Shirebrook Town (away) 3.00pm; Thursday July 17, East Stirling (home) 7.45pm; Sunday July 20, Leyton Orient (home) 3.00pm; Tuesday July 22, Spalding United (away) 7.45pm (Lincs Senior Shield); Saturday July 26, Barrow Town (away) 3.00pm; Tuesday July 29, Sleaford Town (away) 7.45pm. SEASON TICKETS Season tickets (with substantial discounts for purchase before the end of May and various family and junior savings initiatives) have also gone on sale with United chairman David Newton hoping for a plentiful uptake by Pilgrims’ followers — the overall aim being to exceed last season’s sale of 600 as United look to secure a more stable financial future. He said: “To help ensure that the club moves forward on a sound financial footing, we need an average attendance of 2,000 at each home game. The new prices are aimed at achieving that, and as the club moves forward to a period of stability, we are looking for the fans and businesses of the town to help Neil and myself achieve that stability and start to bring success on the pitch. We have also introduced lower child prices, and family tickets, for match days that will help fans support the club on an ongoing basis. We had fantastic support last season, which is really appreciated, and things are starting to look brighter for the future (both on and off the pitch), so we can all look forward to the new season with real optimism.” |

Thu 01 |
Tommy Taylor’s squad building plans for the
2008-2009 season have this week already started to shape up. Fresh from the
conclusion of the 07-08 campaign and the news that the Pilgrims now have a
more secure financial future, the United boss has embarked on sorting out
player options. Midfielder Ashley Nicholls (wanted by Maidenhead), striker
Jon Stevenson, defender Tony Crane and utility player Rob Wesley have all
been allowed to move on. Staying on, though, are the likes of Chris
Wright, Jon Rowan, Jon Froggatt, Tom Matthews and Kieran Leabon who have all
agreed, in principle, to stay at the Staffsmart Stadium. In addition, youth
team players Michael Wood, Lee Beeson and Ben Joyce have also agreed to step
up to senior level. Matt Bloomer, Liam Green and Stewart Talbot are
already under contract for next season. Elsewhere, defender Simon Weaver
is considering a new contract offer, while Paul Ellender, Matt O’Halloran,
Lee Thompson and Micky Nuttell are still in discussions. |

APRIL 2008 |

Sat 26 |
It was smiles all round as Boston United signed
off their 2007-2008 Blue Square North campaign with a 2-1 home win over Hyde,
knowledge that they had edged above county rivals Gainsborough to finish 1oth
in the table — and, most importantly, basking in the vital news confirmed
before kick-off by chairman David Newton that the Pilgrims are about to
emerge from the financial nightmare that almost killed the club last summer.
In a pre-match, on-pitch speech, Mr Newton said that an agreement had been
reached for United to come out of the CVA, for the football creditors to be
paid, and a deal struck with the club’s major creditor the Inland Revenue for
the whole restructuring to go ahead. He told Pilgrims’ fans: “We have agreed
in principle a settlement of the CVA, subject to satisfactory legal agreements
and a meeting of the club’s creditors. This is a hugely significant day for
the Boston United. We had a lot of long and tough discussions with the Inland
Revenue, but we have managed to convince them that our club plays a big part
in the community. And every letter that supporters have written to the taxman
has helped. At the end of our discussions, the Revenue representative told us
we had a very special club with special fans.” Full confirmation of the way
ahead is expected within the next few days, but Mr Newton described today’s
development as “one huge challenge overcome, but with others (continuing
Conference-competition membership and ground lease issues) still to meet.” |

Thu 24 |
Boston United connections are hoping to attract a bumper crowd for the Pilgrims’ final fixture of the Blue Square North campaign. And to aid their quest, officials have slashed admission prices for the Staffsmart Stadium clash with Hyde United (kick-off 3pm). The special one-off admission prices are: Staffsmart Stand, adults, £6; under-16s, £1; terracing, adults, £5; under-16s, £1. After the final whistle, United fans are being urged to stay behind to watch the various end-of-season awards in key player of the season categories. |
|||
|
Sat 19 |
Goals from Paul Ellender, Stewart Talbot and
Jon Rowan helped Boston United to take maximum points from their home Blue
Square North fixture against Blyth. But it was a much closer call than most
observers envisaged when the Pilgrims led 3-0 with only 11 minutes to go.
However, at that point, the visitors staged a determined rally that yielded
two goals and came within a whisker of producing a complete recovery.
However, Tommy Taylor’s men managed to weather some anxious moments to cling
to their victory rewards. |
|||
|
Thu 17 |
Boston United will be aiming to make it a
winning double to end their first season back in non-league spheres. On
Saturday the Pilgrims play host to Blyth Spartans in their penultimate Blue
Square North fixture of the campaign. Manager Tommy Taylor and his squad will
be eager to bag maximum points as a forerunner to the April 26 concluding
match at home to Hyde. United need a sizeable points return from the two
games to help them in their prime aim — finishing above county rivals Gainsborough
who currently lie one place and three points ahead of United, but with two
away games on their agenda to conclude their term. In the meantime, voting is
currently under way for the Pilgrims’ prestigious player of the season award
— the destiny of the trophy to be revealed next Saturday. |
|||
|
Sat 12 |
A Jon Stevenson equaliser nine minutes from time earned
Boston United a 1-1 away draw against Tamworth — the Pilgrims’ final Blue Square
North fixture of the current campaign. A share of the spoils kept United
entrenched in mid-table and still eager to leap-frog county rivals
Gainsborough, a feat they could still achieve if they profit substantially
from the final two home matches of the season over the next two Saturdays
against Blyth Spartans and Hyde United. |
|||
|
Thu 10 |
Boston United tackle their final away match
of the Blue Square North campaign on Saturday when they travel to face
mid-table rivals Tamworth. Besides aiming to consolidate their position in
the upper half of the table (and strive to overhaul county rivals
Gainsborough), Tommy Taylor’s men will also be hoping to clinch their third
BSN double of the season, following on from home-and-away successes achieved
against Solihull and Workington. Earlier in the season, United defeated
Tamworth 1-0 in a hard-fought encounter at the Staffsmart Stadium when a goal
by Jon Stevenson proved decisive. Boston go into the clash boosted by a
comfortable 3-0 midweek friendly match win away to UCL side Bourne, when
goals came from Jon Froggatt, Jon Rowan and trialist Tony Pascu. |
|||
|
Sat 05 |
Two goals from centre forward Micky Nuttell
— his first in Boston United colours since re-signing for the club — helped
Boston United to a welcome three-point Blue Square North haul against
promotion-chasing Stalybridge. Jon Rowan was also on target as Tommy Taylor’s
men enjoyed a 3-1 victory in a match that also saw United keeper Chris Wright
cap a fine performance with an excellent penalty save. The win keeps United
cemented in mid-table and still with a realistic chance of a top 10 finish —
providing they can overhaul county rivals Gainsborough who currently occupy
that slot. |
|||
|
Thu 03 |
Boston United will aim to put behind them a miserable
past month when promotion-chasing Stalybridge Celtic visit the Staffsmart
Stadium on Saturday. The Pilgrims pocketed just four points out of a possible
28 during March and embark on the final throes of the campaign looking for a
flourishing finish — not least as they strive to ensure county rivals
Gainsborough Trinity do not finish higher than United in a final table since
the sides joined senior non-league spheres in 1968. In addition, Tommy
Taylor’s men will be seeking to redress the balance after losing the reverse
fixture by three clear goals against a Stalybridge side who have already won
13 times on their Blue Square North travels this term. |
|||
|
MARCH 2008 |
||||
|
Sat 29 |
Two second half goals by unlikely hero Simon Weaver
enabled Boston United to round off what had otherwise been a miserable month
of March with a hard-earned Blue Square North point via a 2-2 draw away to
promotion-chasing Southport. The Pilgrims had trailed 2-0 at the interval before
staging their point-saving recovery. |
|||
|
Thu 27 |
The month of March will come to a miserable
end for Boston United unless they can conjure up a positive result from their
long-haul trek to Southport on Saturday. The Pilgrims are currently on a terrible
run of just one win, six defeats, three goals scored and five blanks from
their last seven outings. It’s a run of form that has seen February talk of a
play-offs challenge disintegrate totally with the club now destined for a
mid-table finish at best. Southport are well placed for to secure a place in
the promotion play-offs and look formidable opponents, notably having lost
only twice on their own patch this term. Earlier in the season, Southport won
the reverse fixture 2-1 at Boston, albeit in controversial fashion, their
winning goal coming when Boston were not “handed back” possession following
treatment to an injured player. Elsewhere on the United front, manager Tommy
Taylor is already on the lookout for fresh talent for the 2008-2009 campaign
— his travels taking him to the Premiership and Championship scholarship exit
trials with a view to possible recruits during the summer. He said: “We
have watched plenty of lads in action today, but even if we only pick one
good one up, it’s been a successful day. It’s all about building for the
future and that process is well under way.” |
|||
|
Mon 24 |
Boston United lost for the sixth time in
seven Blue Square North outings when being beaten 1-0 on home soils by table-topping
Kettering Town. Frustratingly for the Pilgrims it was also their fifth defeat
by such a margin since March began. But on the day they were given little
chance to shine by a resolute Kettering side who showed just why they are
clear leaders in the table. United went into the match with keeper Chris
Wright back between the sticks after answering an emergency call to help plug
the goalie gap caused by Torquay’s sudden recall of previous regular
custodian Simon Rayner. |
|||
|
Sat 22 |
Boston United slipped to their fifth defeat
in six matches when suffering a 3-1 reverse away to mid-table rivals Redditch
United. The Pilgrims, forced to blood 17-year-old youth team keeper Aaron
Butcher between the sticks, trailed to an early free-kick goal but then went
into the interval at 1-1. However, the home side went on to land maximum Blue
Square North spoils with two further strikes after the break. Tommy Taylor’s
men now face the daunting prospect of playing host to free-scoring
table-toppers Kettering Town on Easter Monday (kick-off 3pm), the latest
match in what is rapidly developing into a traumatic and miserable March at
the Staffsmart Stadium. |
|||
|
Fri 21 |
Boston United go in search of a third Blue
Square North league double tomorrow (Saturday) when they hit the road to face
West Midlands outfit Redditch United. Earlier in the campaign the Pilgrims
won the reverse fixture 3-0 at the Staffsmart Stadium. Other home-and-away
successes have been achieved against Solihull and Workington. But Boston’s
plans for this latest clash — and Easter Monday’s home tussle with
table-topping Kettering — have been thrown into turmoil by news that Torquay
United have recalled goalkeeper Simon Rayner back to Plainmoor. This leaves
Pilgrims’ boss Tommy Taylor little time to scour round for a replacement, an
urgent issue given that the only other keeper on the club’s books at the
moment is inexperienced youth-teamer Arron Butcher. |
|||
|
Sat 15 |
Boston United suffered a fourth 1-0 loss in their
last five matches when tumbling by a solitary goal to play-off contenders
Burscough. The result — the Pilgrims’ fifth home Blue Square North loss of
the campaign — left United still treading water in mid-table. The only goal
of the game came after nine minutes, the strike being something of a
nightmare for Boston keeper Simon Rayner who allowed a Robbie Booth header to
squeeze through his grasp and between his legs before trickling over the
line. The Pilgrims gave a late substitute debut outing to young striker
Markell Bailey. United’s next challenge is a trip to Redditch on Saturday
March 22 when more BSN points will be at stake. |
|||
|
Thu 13 |
After three successive away fixtures Boston
United return to home territory on Saturday when they entertain play-off
challengers Burscough. The match offers the Pilgrims the chance to get back
among the points and back in the goal-grabbing groove having suffered 1-0
losses in three of their last four outings. Tommy Taylor’s men enter the fray
with most of the established first team squad expected to be available,
including back-from-injury centre forward Jon Froggatt who was red-carded in
the reverse match between the sides earlier in the campaign over the ruling
out of what would have been a United leveller in a match the Pilgrims lost
2-1. |
|||
|
Tue 11 |
A goal five minutes from time sentenced
Boston United to a 1-0 reverse away to Vauxhall Motors. With the loss went
three more Blue Square North points — the defeat once and for all ending all
hopes of the Pilgrims getting in any sort of blow in the play-offs zone. The
match had seen United turn in a moderate first half display but then went on
to dominate the second period and were arguably unlucky not to have cashed in
on a series of chances, the best of which saw Liam Green rattle the bar,
Ashley Nicholls having a headed “goal” disallowed and a clutch of other close
calls from decent openings. However, in the end, it was a goal on 85 minutes
by Peter Heller completely against the run of play that buried Boston. |
|||
|
Sat 08 |
Two goals from imposing centre back Tony
Crane fired Boston United to a fightback 2-1 Blue Square North success away
to Hucknall Town. Crane’s second half double — one from the penalty spot — helped
the Pilgrims to overturn an interval deficit and gain revenge for an earlier
home reverse against the Nottinghamshire outfit. The result kept Tommy
Taylor’s men in the upper half of the table and lifted club spirits after
successive 1-0 losses in their previous two outings. The Pilgrims’ next
challenge is another long haul away excursion to Ellesmere port to face
Vauxhall Motors in a re-arranged Blue Square North match on Tuesday (March
11). |
|||
|
Thu 06 |
After successive 1-0 reverses, Boston United
will seek to bounce back to winning ways on Saturday — and in the process
gain a slice of revenge. The Pilgrims make the reasonably short trip to the
Nottingham area to tackle Hucknall Town in a Blue Square North fixture, one
that offers United the chance to redress the balance after the reverse
fixture saw Hucknall win 3-2 at the Staffsmart Stadium in November. For the
forthcoming encounter, the Pilgrims will have Paul Ellender available again
after suspension. And there is understood to be an outside chance that
long-term back injury victim Jon Froggatt could enter squad selection options
after being sidelined for two months. |
|||
|
Tue 04 |
It was a case of long haul gloom for Boston
United when they suffered a slender 1-0 loss away to Barrow. With the reverse
went more precious Blue Square North points to leave the Pilgrims’ already
wafer-thin hopes of reaching the play-off zone now virtually extinct. The
only goal on the night in Cumbria came via an early penalty that tipped the
scales in the Bluebirds’ favour. The result meant that, after a bright start
to the new calendar year, Boston United had now suffered back-to-back losses. |
|||
|
Sat 01 |
Boston United saw their play-off ambitions virtually wiped away when suffering a slender 1-0 home reverse against title-chasing Harrogate. The Pilgrims arguably enjoyed the better of the play on a day when a forceful downfield wind made life difficult for both sets of players. However, it was Harrogate who bagged maximum points thanks to a solitary goal seconds before the interval by Danny Holland. The result leaves the Pilgrims still entrenched in mid-table and now almost completely detached from the top five reckoning. United’s next challenge is a long-haul trek to meet Barrow on Tuesday (March 4), a match rescheduled from its original date of December 22 when the Bluebirds had Setanta Shield commitments. |

|
FEBRUARY 2008 |
||||
|
Wed 27 |
There’s a testing match on the agenda for Boston
United when they play title-chasing Harrogate Town on Saturday at the
Staffsmart Stadium (kick-off 3pm). The Yorkshire outfit currently lie third
in the Blue Square North table, although they suffered a surprise 1-0 home
loss to lowly Blyth Spartans on Tuesday evening. The Pilgrims will hope to
keep up a solid run of recent form that has yielded seven wins, 22 points out
of the last 30 available and clean sheets secured in their latest two
outings. But they will have to go into the encounter minus the services of
Paul Ellender who will be suspended after totting up 10 bookings for the
season. Last night 9Tuesday) the Pilgrims tackled an away midweek friendly
against AFC Stamford. Manager Tommy Taylor gave most of his squad a taste of
action in a match that United lost 1-0. |
|||
|
Sat 23 |
A goal from Jon Rowan after just six minutes helped to
fire Boston United to a hard-earned maximum points haul away to Workington.
But the success was also down to a fabulous second half save by keeper Simon
Rayner that kept the Pilgrims’ slender lead intact at a critical point in
proceedings. The result also brought about Boston’s second Blue Square North
“double” in successive weeks and — as a defensive boost — saw them secure
another all-too-rare clean sheet feat. |
|||
|
Thu 21 |
Boston United will go in search of more Blue
Square North rewards on Saturday. But their mission is a tough one. Tommy
Taylor’s men will make the long haul to Cumbria to face a Workington Town
side that dumped United out of the FA Cup at the fourth qualifying round in
the worth-west back in November. The Pilgrims are likely to have most of
their senior squad available in addition to new front line signing on work
experience loan from Peterborough Hakeem Araba. Boston go into the encounter on
a fairly decent run of form — five wins, a draw and just two defeats in their
eight league outings since the turn of the new year. |
|||
|
Wed 20 |
There were mixed fortunes for the two Boston
United XIs contesting friendly match action tonight. One team lost 3-1 away
to Boston town, Lee Thompson being the scorer. The other side drew 2-2 at
Bourne Town with men on the mark being Micky Nuttell and new teenage strike
recruit Hakeem Araba. |
|||
|
Wed 20 |
Boston United players will be in action on two
fronts tonight (Wednesday). Manager Tommy Taylor is keen to see his first
team squad and members of the youth team tackle 90 minutes of action. And as
such, two Pilgrims XIs will be on parade in away matches against United
Counties League sides Bourne and Boston Town. |
|||
|
Sat 16 |
Goals from Jon Rowan and Jon Stevenson
helped Boston United to 2-0 victory over Solihull Moors. The three points
netted helped to bolster the Pilgrims’ position in the upper half of the
table and kept them in with an outside chance of making the end-of-season
play-offs — now sitting nine points off fifth spot with a game in hand. The
win over Solihull also saw a fourth United career “debut” for striker Micky
Nuttell. The 39-year-old had a hand in United’s opening goal. And post-match
drew praise from manager Tommy Taylor. He said: “Micky’s been out for a long
while with injury and the only way to get him back to match fitness is to get
him starting games. I thought he did well for us and gave us a strong
presence up front. We know he’s not going to have the pace to run in behind
defenders, but he still has the ability to hold up play and flick things on
for others to feed off. Initially he’s here for the rest of the season, but
it might be that he has a role to play next season. We’ll see on that.” In
respect of his team’s overall performance in what was a generally scrappy
game, Taylor said: “Only on a few occasions did we really get the ball down
and put our game together. For a long time, our passing was an embarrassment.
But we got the three points and kept a clean sheet. And that’s what matters
most.” Taylor added that he hoped the forthcoming week would yield better
news on injury victim Jon Froggatt while Peterborough loanee Sam Gaughran
should be back available for the February 23 trip to Workington — possibly in
tandem with another proposed Posh loan player in the guise of powerful
teenage striker Hakeem Araba. Taylor said: “We want to have a look at the lad
and Peterborough have told us he won’t cost us anything which is great as far
as we are concerned.” |
|||
|
Thu 14 |
Boston United will have the services of a
new signing “old boy” at their disposal when they tackle their next Blue Square
North fixture, at home to Solihull Moors on Saturday. Manager Tommy Taylor
has made the surprise move to recruit veteran front man Micky Nuttell who has
just recovered from a long-term injury after starting the campaign on the
books of Boston Town. The 39-year-old front man has been with United for
three previous spells and his arrival comes at a time when current regular
target man Jon Froggatt is sidelined by a back injury. Nuttell
spent the 1991-1992 season with the Pilgrims, before joining Kettering Town,
but returned for a brief loan spell in 1996. His third spell with United
unfolded in 1999-2000, when his 12 league goals helped the Pilgrims lift the
Dr Martens League title. He is expected to figure against Solihull, a match
that will see the Pilgrims eager to bounce back from their midweek 2-1
reverse at Blyth. |
|||
|
Feb 12 |
For the seventh time this season in Blue
Square North fixtures Boston United slipped to defeat after scoring the
match’s first goal. And this latest “loss from the jaws of victory” feat
effectively ended the Pilgrims’ already slim hopes of attaining an
end-of-season spot among the play-off contenders. United seized the
initiative through a 21st minute breakthrough by Ashley Nicholls.
But Blyth rallied after the break and netted maximum spoils with two second
half goals that served to ease their concerns at the relegation end of the
table. The Pilgrims’ next challenge is a home league encounter against
Solihull Moors on Saturday when United will aim to complete a double over the
West Midlanders, having won the reverse fixture 3-1 earlier in the campaign. |
|||
|
Feb 09 |
Goals from Paul Ellender and Jon Stevenson gave Boston United a fine 2-1 success over high-riding Telford at the Staffsmart Stadium. The victory kept the Pilgrims’ recent improved run of form intact and meant they had lost just one in their last seven Blue Square North outings, taking 16 points from a possible 21 in the process — also consolidating the club’s position of 10th in the table, 10 points adrift of the play-off places, but with a match in hand. United’s next assignment comes on Tuesday when they have a re-arranged away league fixture at Blyth Spartans. |
|||
|
Feb 07 |
Boston United will be looking to get back on the victory
trail after losing for the first time in six Blue Square North outings last
weekend at Hyde. But the Pilgrims face a tough assignment when they played
host to title-chasing AFC Telford United on Saturday (3pm). The Staffsmart
Stadium encounter won’t now, after all, feature the envisaged appearance of
striker Liam Nimmo was expected to sign from Gainsborough Trinity after seven
days’ notice of approach had elapsed. But he has apparently snubbed the
Pilgrims’ interest in favour of staying with Trinity. With regular target man
Jon Froggatt injured, manager Tommy Taylor looks like having to choose his
front pairing from Kieran Leabon, Jon Rowan and Jon Stevenson. |
|||
|
Feb 05 |
Boston United boss Tommy Taylor has scooped
the Blue Square North manager of the month accolade for January. During the
period under review the Pilgrims achieved three victories and a draw as part
of what became a five-match unbeaten sequence that ended on Sunday at Hyde.
Meanwhile, the Pilgrims have announced they have parted company with
midfielder Mbiyeye Medine who has not figured on a regular basis in recent
weeks. The player made 20 appearances for United since signing last summer. |
|||
|
Feb 03 |
Goals conceded in the dying throes of each half
sentenced Boston United to their first defeat in six outings. The Pilgrims
hit the road to Cheshire to face high-riding rivals Hyde and ultimately
returned home on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline. It was a disappointing
outcome to an afternoon that had started brightly for the Pilgrims when they
took a first half lead through Kieran Leabon. But Hyde levelled moments
before the break and then snatched all three points right at the death. The
result leaves Boston with an even more diminished hope of achieving a
play-off position in the Blue Square North shake-up. |
|||
|
JANUARY 2008 |
||||
|
Jan 31 |
Boston United will be hoping to make it six unbeaten
games in a row since the turn of 2008 when they travel to face Hyde United
this weekend. More important Blue Square North points will be at stake in the
encounter which takes placed on Sunday (2pm) at the request of the Cheshire
police. The Pilgrims enter the fray buoyed by their recent run of form that
has yielded four wins and one draw from their last five league outings —
rewards helping to keep the club still with an outside chance of making the
end-of-season play-offs. But manager Tommy Taylor still has to ponder his
squad options with striker Jon Froggatt and centre back Simon Weaver looking
to shake off injuries while Matt Bloomer and midfielder Ashley Nicholls are
both recovering from illnesses. In addition, the United squad has, today,
been depleted by two players with midfielder David Galbraith making the
switch to BSN rivals Kettering Town while fit-again goalkeeper Lee Crockett
has been released. Elsewhere, United officials have announced that the
Staffsmart Stadium will play host to a prestige Sunday fixture on February
24. That is the date when local league side Magnet Tavern entertain
Ipswich-area outfit Brantham Athletic in the quarter-final of the Carlsberg
FA Sunday Cup. Kick-off will be at 2pm with admission £2 for adults and £1
concessions. |
|||
|
Jan 26 |
A second half strike by David Galbraith gave Boston United
a welcome win on the road. The Pilgrims prised three valuable Blue Square
North points from a 1-0 success away to lowly Hinckley United and in the
process edged themselves a touch closer to the play-offs zone. Victory also
enabled the Pilgrims to take their recent mini-sequence of success to five
games (four wins and a draw). It was also a notable day for the Boston
rearguard with goalie Simon Rayner and his colleagues keeping the team’s
first clean sheet in September 19. |
|||
|
Jan 24 |
Boston United will hope to make it five unbeaten matches
in a row on Saturday when they hit the road to face lowly Hinckley United.
The Pilgrims have won three and drawn one of their last four Blue Square
North fixtures and travel to Leicestershire in confident mood. It’s a match
that offers striker Jon Stevenson the chance to face his former pals — his
goal in the reverse fixture back in August impressing Boston connections
sufficiently to swoop for his signature. |
|||
|
Jan 23 |
Most of Boston United’s senior squad were
involved in a midweek friendly away to Wisbech Town when the sides fought out
a 1-1 draw. The Pilgrims’ goal came from a second half penalty by Paul
Alexander. Meanwhile, United have this week learned they will travel to face
Barrow on Tuesday March 4 in a match re-arranged from its original postponed
date of December 22. |
|||
|
Jan 19 |
Boston United grabbed a last-gasp
point-saving goal against high-riding Nuneaton Borough. Super-sub Lee
Thompson got the decisive touch to earn the Pilgrims a stoppage time 1-1 draw
in a match that also saw imposing debutant United keeper Simon Rayner save a
penalty. It was the second time this term that United had grabbed a late
share of the spoils against Borough — the clubs’ earlier meeting ending in a
2-2 scoreline thanks to two Boston goals in the final three minutes. |

Boston United have reached agreement to sign
a new goalkeeper. Former Lincoln City custodian Simon Rayner is expected to
make his debut for the Pilgrims in Saturday’s home Blue Square North
encounter with Nuneaton Borough. Rayner (24) is currently on the books of
Blue Square Premier club Torquay United and comes to Boston on loan for the
remainder of the season. The Canadian under-23 international was targeted by
United boss Tommy Taylor after a proposed move to recruit Paul Bastock fell
through. Speaking on the arrival of Rayner, Taylor said: “Simon
is an imposing presence and I am sure he will prove to be a great
signing.” Rayner’s signing follows on from the arrival of another player
in the guise of 17-year-old Sam Gaughran on a work experience loan deal. The
youngster can play in either defence or midfield and comes to the Staffsmart
Stadium looking to gain first team involvement. Meanwhile, the Pilgrims’
clash against Nuneaton is seen as a pivotal encounter in respect of Boston’s
potential push towards the play-offs zone. Borough lie above United in the
table and Pilgrims connections know a maximum points haul would edge them closer
to a much loftier position. Earlier in the season, United drew 2-2 at
Nuneaton when battling back from a two-goal deficit with a double strike in
the final three minutes. |

Boston United’s scheduled home friendly
match against a Peterborough United XI tonight has been called off because
the Staffsmart Stadium pitch is waterlogged. |

Jan 14 |
Boston United are counting down the days to
their next Blue Square North encounter. Saturday (January 19) sees the
Pilgrims play host to Nuneaton Borough in a match seen as critical to
United’s aspirations of a late season surge towards the play-offs zone.
Boston will go into the encounter on the back of a Wednesday night (January
16) home friendly against a Peterborough United XI (admission £5 for adults
and under-16s free). In addition, United connections have today confirmed
that teenage defender Michael Wood has signed professional terms. The player,
just turned 18, has impressed in a couple of first team outings and appears to
have a bright future ahead of him. Elsewhere, United boss Tommy Taylor is
still looking the secure the signature of a goalkeeper before Saturday’s
clash and remains heavily linked with recruiting Paul Bastock from Rushden
and Diamonds although no further news is to hand on whether this deal will go
through. |

|
Jan 06 |
Goalkeeper Paul Bastock will be back in
Boston United colours in time for the Pilgrims’ next competitive match. So says
boss Tommy Taylor. He confirmed that a deal had been agreed with Rushden and
Diamonds for the return of Boston’s all-time appearances record holder (625
matches). United require the services of a new keeper with the completion of
Curtis Aspden’s loan spell from Hull in tandem with Lee Crockett’s on-going
injury problem. Taylor said: “Curtis has done really well for us, but it’s
now clear he is going to move on to Farsley Celtic in the Blue Square
Premier. And good luck to him. We know we need a good, experienced
replacement and Paul Bastock fits that bill. I’ve got the go-ahead to get him
back and the deal should be done in time for us to play Nuneaton on January
19 which is a massively important match for us.” Bastock originally joined
the Pilgrims in 1992 when signed by manager Peter Morris and went on to enjoy
13 years in the fold before leaving in 2004. Since then he has had spells
with Scarborough, Dagenham and Redbridge and St Albans before joining Rushden
in May 2007. His envisaged return to the Staffsmart Stadium comes at a time
when United have no match for a fortnight. On Saturday January 12 they were
due to face Blyth, but their scheduled opponents now have FA Trophy
commitments. |

|
Jan 05 |
Boston United registered their third
straight Blue Square North victory in the space of eight days and
consolidated a place in the upper half of the table on a day when goals from
Jon Rowan (two), Matt O’Halloran, Kieran Leabon and Jon Froggatt helped to
bury basement side Leigh RMI in a 5-1 triumph at the Staffsmart Stadium. |
|||
|
Jan 03 |
Three wins in a row will be Boston United’s
prime target when they tackle their next Blue Square North encounter.
Saturday sees the Pilgrims play host to bottom-of-the-table Leigh RMI (3pm).
Tommy Taylor’s men go into the clash buoyed by successive victories over
Alfreton and Gainsborough that have helped to hoist the club back into the
top half of the division, albeit still 15 points off a play-off spot. But the
manager remains hopeful of seeing his squad deliver a more sustained
challenge during the second half of the season. He said: “We have been too
inconsistent in the first few months. But now if we can go on a little run of
matches unbeaten, then we might just put ourselves in with a chance of
getting up their and around the shake-up.” United go into Saturday’s clash
now minus the services of defender Adam Smith whose loan spell from parent
club Peterborough has expired. Meanwhile late fitness checks will be awaited
on strike pair Jon Froggatt and Kieran Leabon. |

Jan 01 |
Tony Crane made another name for himself
when weighing in with two late goals that earned Boston United a revenge
derby day 3-1 success away to county neighbours Gainsborough Trinity. The Pilgrims
made amends for a 1-0 Boxing Day loss against the Blues with a fine, battling
performance at the Northolme — their victory coming despite conceding an
equaliser to Kieran Leabon’s opening strike just before the interval. The
three-point harvest helped United inch further up the Blue Square North
table, but the Pilgrims remain some distance off the sought-after play-off
places. |

Sat 29 |
Defender Tony Crane was the last-gasp hero for
Boston United with what proved the winning goal in a 2-1 success over
Alfreton. The result cemented the Pilgrims’ mid-table position in the Blue
Square North table — and more importantly boosted confidence in Tommy
Taylor’s squad after a dismal sequence of six straight competitive losses and
just one win in their previous 11 outings. The Pilgrims will now be looking
to follow up their long-overdue win with a revenge success away to county
rivals Gainsborough on New Year’s Day. |
|||
|
Wed 26 |
There was no festive joy for Boston United
as they crashed 1-0 at home to county rivals Gainsborough Trinity. The
reverse plunged the Pilgrims into the bottom half of the Blue Square North
table and made it six straight competitive defeats in a row for Tommy Taylor’s
men. The derby clash at the Staffsmart Stadium was ultimately decided by a
goal from Blues’ defender Wes Parker — ironically a season-long transfer
target for United who netted in the 26th minute. The match was
notable for a moment of controversy on 71 minutes when visiting keeper Adam
Sollitt handled outside his area to deny Jon Stevenson a scoring opportunity.
But referee Geoff Laws angered the home players and fans by meting out only a
yellow card as punishment for the misdemeanour. The increasingly beleaguered
Pilgrims must now set their sights on breaking out of their woeful run when
they entertain Alfreton on Saturday (December 29), kick-off 3pm. |
|||
|
Fri 21 |
Boston United have their thoughts trained on derby matters this Christmas. Due to scheduled opponents Barrow having Setanta Shield commitments United are left without a game this Saturday. It means their total concentration can be devoted to the Boxing Day clash against county rivals Gainsborough Trinity (kick-off 3pm at the Staffsmart Stadium). For this encounter, manager Tommy Taylor is likely to be able to call on the services after injury of midfielder David Galbraith. Meanwhile keeper Curtis Aspden and defender Nicky Weaver are expected to make their home debuts. Earlier in the season the Pilgrims won 2-1 away at Gainsborough in a Setanta Shield clash but more recently United’s form has been on the slide — the club having won only one of their last 10 competitive outings. In midweek, United took a team to play a friendly match against Lincoln Moorlands. Lee Thompson was on target late in the game, but the Pilgrims missed several other good chances in a 2-1 defeat. |
|||
|
Sat 15 |
Boston United suffered yet more away-day gloom when
tumbling to a late goal from host club Worcester. The 87th minute
decider tipped the scales in City’s favour and condemned United to their
sixth away Blue Square North loss on their travels this season, despite
taking the lead early in the second half. The outcome added to a poor run of
form that has now seen them win only once in their last 10 competitive
outings. |
|||
|
Thu 13 |
Boston United have added a new defender to their ranks.
Twenty-nine-year-old centre back Simon Weaver has joined the Pilgrims’ fold after
having a spell out of the game due to an injury sustained in pre-season while
on trial at Salisbury. But now the former Lincoln City player is rapidly
returning to full fitness and — after attracting interest from Southport —
has agreed to sign for United. It is unlikely he will be match-fit enough to
enter selection options for Saturday’s Blue Square North trip to Worcester
(kick-off 3pm), but he should figure in manager Tommy Taylor’s thoughts for
the Boxing Day game against Gainsborough and beyond. Since his time at
Lincoln, Weaver has also been on the books of Macclesfield Town,
Kidderminster Harriers and Scarborough. Boston United will not now have a
match on Saturday December 22. Their scheduled trip to Barrow is off because
the Cumbrian side have Setanta Shield commitments. No new date has yet been
fixed for the match. One game that has been re-arranged, though, is United’s
trip to Vauxhall Motors (postponed on December 8). This will now be played on
Tuesday March 11 |
|||
|
Sat 08 |
Boston United were left without a fixture
when their scheduled Blue Square North trip to Vauxhall Motors was postponed
due to a waterlogged pitch. An inspection was carried out early enough to
prevent the Pilgrims and their fans embarking on their trip. No new date has
yet been fixed for the encounter. |
|||
|
Thu 06 |
Boston United will look to break out of a
frustrating run of results when they travel to face Vauxhall Motors on
Saturday in search of much-needed Blue Square North points. The Pilgrims
enter the fray seeking only their second win in 10 games and will be boosted
by the arrival of a new goalkeeper in the guise of 20-year-old Curtis Aspden
on loan from Championship club Hull City. He comes in to stand in for thigh
injury victim Lee Crockett and is almost certain to make his debut on
Saturday as the Pilgrims seek to chalk up a double over the Motormen after
recording a 5-1 home triumph over the same opposition in October. In respect
of Aspden’s signing, United boss Tommy Taylor said: “I’m
delighted to have Curtis onboard because he is a goalkeeper of enormous
potential. Thanks go to Phil Brown and Brian Horton at Hull for all their
help in making this move happen.” Aspden has already played against Boston
this term for table-topping Harrogate with whom he spent the first three
months of the campaign on a temporary deal from Hull. Boston warmed up for
their Saturday trip with a 2-0 victory in a midweek friendly away to Grantham
when goals from Jon Stevenson and Tony Crane (penalty) proved decisive. Elsewhere
on the United front, chairman David Newton is leading an initiative designed
to tap into the ideas and suggestions from United fans and the local business
community into assessing what sort of club the town’s folk want to see for
the future. To this end, questionnaires will be available this week. Mr
Newton said: “We welcome all suggestions no matter how trivial, or indeed how
bold and forward thinking. Once we have gathered all the relevant
information, this will be developed into a business plan that will set out
the strategy for the club for the next five to 10 years.” |

Sat 01 |
Controversy reigned as Boston
United suffered their second home Blue Square North loss of the season. The
Pilgrims, minus the services of several key players due to injuries,
suspensions and family issues, battled hard to tame championship-chasing
rivals Southport but were ultimately undone in sour circumstances. The
visitors’ winning goal came deep into stoppage time when they elected to play
forward from a drop-ball rather than hand back possession to Boston after
United players had declined to play on when visiting sub Tony Gray required
treatment for an injury. The whole scenario left a bitter taste to what had
otherwise been a free-flowing and entertaining contest. The result left the
Pilgrims entrenched in mid-table and more worryingly with just one win from
their last nine competitive outings. |

NOVEMBER 2007 |

|
Fri 30 |
Boston United go in search of only their second
win in their last nine competitive fixtures when they play host tomorrow
(Saturday) to high-riding Southport in a Blue Square North fixture. The
visitors are likely to include ex-Pilgrims Chris Holland and Matt Hocking in
their ranks. Boston go into the encounter minus the services of suspended duo
Paul Ellender and Jon Rowan plus injured duo Stewart Talbot and David
Galbraith. But towering centre back Tony Crane is back in contention after
resolving “in-house disciplinary issues” with the club in midweek while
midfielder Alex Notman could also figure after injury. However, there appears
no resolution to the hope of seeing keeper Paul Bastock back in United
colours in the wake of talks about a loan move from parent club Rushden and
Diamonds whose boss Garry Hill apparently wants to secure the services of
another second-string goalie before sanctioning Bastock’s move. |

|
Sat 24 |
There was yet more away-day gloom for Boston
United when they crashed off the FA Trophy trail with a third qualifying round
2-1 loss against Gateshead. The Pilgrims trailed to a first half penalty and
then conceded what proved the match-winner moments after Jon Froggatt had
drawn them level midway through the second period. It was United’s eighth
away loss in 13 competitive games on their travels this term — a run that has
featured just two victories (at Gainsborough and Solihull). |

Sat 17 |
Boston United succumbed to their second defeat in three
days when being humbled 3-0 away to Stalybridge Celtic in a Blue Square North
encounter. The home side always appeared to be in control of proceedings and
despite a few Pilgrims’ flurries, they eventually coasted to success against
a United side who had Jon Rowan dismissed late on for apparent remarks made
to the referee over the award of a disputed penalty. |

Fri 16 |
Boston United will tomorrow (Saturday) be looking to
bounce back after the midweek shock of losing at home to lowly Hucknall Town.
The Pilgrims hit the road in pursuit of more vital Blue Square North points
away to mid-table rivals Stalybridge. Midfielder Stewart Talbot is a major
injury doubt while David Galbraith (hamstring) and Tony Crane (disciplinary
reasons) are already ruled out. However, Alex Notman and Liam Green are both
close to returning to full fitness and could figure in manager Tommy Taylor’s
selection options. |
|||
|
Wed 14 |
Boston United lost their unbeaten home
record in a shock 3-2 Staffsmart Stadium reverse against lowly Hucknall Town.
The pilgrims, despite taking an early lead through Jon Rowan, never really
looked at ease and their visitors hit back to establish a 2-1 interval lead.
Then, despite Jon Froggatt netting a 68th minute equaliser, the
Pilgrims succumbed to a stunning strike on 90 minutes by Ben Saunders. The
result dented United’s push towards a play-off spot in the Blue Square North
table, leaving them still in seventh place — seven points adrift of a place
in the coveted top five. |
|||
|
Tue 13 |
Boston United will tomorrow (November 14) go
in pursuit of back-to-back home wins inside five days when they play host to
lowly Hucknall Town in a Blue Square North encounter. The Pilgrims will be
gunning for maximum points as they strive to climb increasingly closer to the
play-off positions. Manager Tommy Taylor expects to have a near full-strength
squad at his disposal, although yesterday club officials confirmed that
defender Tony Crane won’t figure due to what is stated are internal
“disciplinary matters.” Meanwhile, United sources have confirmed that “a
technicality” over what is understood to be the registration of a player Tom
Matthews is being contested after the issue of an FA charge against the
Pilgrims. |
|||
|
Mon 12 |
There was penalty shoot-out anguish for Boston United’s under-18s when they were knocked of the FA Youth Cup trail away to Lincoln City. The Imps looked strong candidates to secure progress from the round one tie in 90 minutes, notably when they led 2-0 at half-time. But the young Pilgrims showed great resolve after the break to level the scores with late strikes by Adam Millson and Mitchell Griffiths. Boston created the better chances in extra-time, but the Imps secured a 5-4 success on spot-kicks in a nail-biting conclusion to the evening’s proceedings. |
|||
|
Sat 10 |
Boston United romped to their biggest win of the season when
conquering Vauxhall Motors 5-1 at the Staffsmart Stadium. Two goals from
midfielder Ashley Nicholls sandwiched other strikes by Jon Rowan, Jon
Stevenson (penalty) and Jon Froggatt as the Pilgrims protected their unbeaten
home record in the Blue Square North. But the match wasn’t all one-way
traffic as Vauxhall Motors showed plenty of spirit throughout the 90 minutes
and can possibly feel that the final margin of defeat was a tad harsh. |
|||
|
Fri 09 |
Boston United are looking forward to a
long-awaited home fixture. Tomorrow (Saturday) sees the Pilgrims play host to
Vauxhall Motors when important Blue Square North points will be at stake. The
match will see United bring to an end a run of five successive away games as
they play their first game at the Staffsmart Stadium since October 14.
Although Tommy Taylor’s men have been knocked off two cup trails during this
time, they have still maintained a solid footing of ninth in the league table
on the strength of four unbeaten BSN outings and just one loss in their last
seven league outings. |
|||
|
Tue 06 |
Manager Tommy Taylor took the chance of
giving his Boston United squad a full-scale practice match away to United
Counties League outfit Sleaford Town. And the exercise had its value with the
Pilgrims netting a six-goal haul while keeping a much-needed clean sheet at
the other end. Striker Paul Alexander led the way with a second half
hat-trick adding to single-goal returns by Jon Rowan, Jon Stevenson and Lee
Thompson. |
|||
|
Mon 05 |
Boston United have been handed another tough
away knockout tie. The Pilgrims will have to travel to face UniBond League
outfit Gateshead in the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy. The tie will
be played on Saturday November 24. |
|||
|
Sat 03 |
For seemingly the umpteenth time this season Boston United
surrendered vital Blue Square North points from a position of strength. Today
they were held to a 2-2 away draw at Leigh RMI having led 2-0 at the interval
by goals from Mbiyeye Medine and Jon Rowan. But in truth, the Pilgrims should
have fully wrapped up the points against what looked one of the poorer
outfits in the competition. But two moments of defensive frailty after the
break proved costly as Tommy Taylor’s men were left to reflect on how they
snatched a draw from the jaws of victory. |
|||
|
Thu 01 |
For the fifth match in a row, Boston United
will be on their travels when next called to action. Saturday (November 3)
sees the Pilgrims hit the road to meet an out-of-sorts Leigh RMI side when
three vital Blue Square North points will be at stake. Tommy Taylor’s men
will enter the fray hoping to put behind them the double disappointment of
suffering successive KO blows at Workington (FA Cup) and Kettering (Setanta
Shield) during the past few days — each time with little in the way of clear
goalscoring chances being created. As such, United connections will hope to
return to the sort of form that has seen them climb to the fringes of the
play-offs zone. They go into the encounter with new signing Alex Notman
expected to make his league debut while there could be some squad involvement
for midfielders David Galbraith and Stewart Talbot who have both been
sidelined by injury in recent weeks. |
|||
|
OCTOBER 2007 |
||||
|
Mon 29 |
Boston United bowed out of the Setanta
Shield when losing 2-0 away to fellow Blue Square North rival outfit
Kettering Town. The Pilgrims performed creditably but were never genuinely in
the hunt against their high-flying rivals and had to admit second best to
their Northamptonshire opponents in a match that heralded a debut appearance
for midfielder Alex Notman (former Manchester United trainee). He had signed
contractual form in advance of kick-off. |

Sat 27 |
A goal 16 minutes from time condemned Boston
United to FA Cup fourth qualifying round defeat today at Workington. The
Pilgrims battled hard but were ultimately undone by Michael Reed’s strike.
The goal earned the Cumbrians a £10,000 prize pay cheque and a first round
trip to face League Two side Bury in round one. Boston are left to
concentrate on Blue Sqaure North matters plus Monday night’s (October 29)
televised trip to Kettering contest a Setanta Shield second round tie. |
|||
|
Fri 26 |
A first round proper tie now away to Lincoln
City awaits Boston United’s under-18s in the FA Youth Cup. The young Pilgrims
booked their place in for the Sincil Bank clash on the strength of a third
qualifying round 3-0 win away to Stapenhill last night (Thursday). Marksmen
for Boston were Adam Millson, Ben Joyce and Mensah Kinch. A date for the trip
to Lincoln is to be confirmed. |
|||
|
Thu 25 |
Boston United turn their attentions to
knockout business over the next few days with progress on two trophy fronts
being uppermost in their minds. First up is a long-haul trek to face fellow
Blue Square North side Workington on Saturday in an FA Cup fourth qualifying
round tie (kick-off 3pm). Then on Monday (subject to there being no replay
commitments), the Pilgrims will make the much shorter trip to tackle
Kettering in the second round of the Setanta Shield, a tie due to be screened
live by satellite TV network Setanta Sports (kick-off 7.45pm). United go into
the action double bill with confidence being gained from a current run of six
unbeaten games in all competitions. On the fitness front, United will be
without the services of injury victim Stewart Talbot while David Galbraith is
also carrying a niggling strain. In addition, the Pilgrims will not be able
to call upon the services of Jon Rowan for the Workington trip as he is
cup-tied. Meanwhile, tonight (Thursday), Boston United’s under-18s travel to
Stapenhill to tackle an FA Youth Cup third qualifying round tie. The young
Pilgrims have already progressed via a 3-0 home win over Teversal and a 7-1
away thumping of Barrow Town. |
|||
|
Tue 23 |
Despite turning in one of their poorer
performances, Boston United still managed to add a point to their Blue Square
North tally. But it was a late salvation act that rescued a share of the
spoils in a 2-2 draw at Nuneaton Borough. The home side netted a goal in each
half and led 2-0 going into the final few minutes. But then a Tony Crane
penalty and a last-gasp Jon Stevenson leveller gave the Pilgrims a crucial
point—a result that took their unbeaten run to six competitive matches. |
|||
|
Sat 20 |
Boston United made it five competitive matches without defeat and claimed the confidence-boosting prize of their first away Blue Square North win of the season when triumphing by a 3-1 margin at Solihull Moors. One goal by skipper Paul Ellender and two by Lee Thompson ultimately proved decisive for a Pilgrims side who were, on the day, good value for their win—particularly with manager Tommy Taylor utilising a revised 3-5-2 formation and resting some key individuals in advance of some testing matches ahead, starting with Tuesday night’s tricky-looking visit to Nuneaton (kick-off 7.45pm). United’s win at Solihull took them up to eighth in the table and to within five points of a play-off spot. |
|||
|
Fri 19 |
Boston United return to Blue Square North
duty tomorrow (Saturday) when they travel to face Solihull Moors. United will
once again be chasing their first away league victory of the campaign and can
welcome back striker Jon Froggatt after suspension and recent recruit Jon
Rowan who was cup-tied for last Sunday’s win over Hinckley. But Stewart
Talbot remains sidelined through injury and Matt O’Halloran sits out the game
due to a one-game ban after being dismissed against Worcester. |
|||
|
Wed 17 |
Boston United’s under-18s team reached the
third qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup with an emphatic 7-1 destruction
of Barrow Town in a match replayed after being abandoned the previous midweek
due to fog. Pilgrims’ marksmen were Mensah Kinch (twice), Lee
Beeson, Jon Fairweather, Ben Joyce, James Davies and Alex Beck. A third
qualifying round trip to Stapenhill now awaits. |

|
Mon 15 |
Boston United have been handed a long-haul
away trek tie in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup. Saturday October
27 will see the Pilgrims make the marathon trip to Cumbria to face
Workington. The sides met on the opening day of the season at the Staffsmart
Stadium when Boston ran out 2-0 winners. Since then, though, Workington have
made sizeable strides up the table to sit close to the play-off positions. At
stake on the date in question will be progress into the first round proper on
November 10 and the additional bonus of £10,000 in prize money. United have
already netted rewards of £8,750 from their victories over Buxton and
Hinckley. |
