September 30 round-up

Cropley’s Suzuki Premier Division

Skegness Town came out well on top in their local derby clash at Spilsby Town. Their convincing victory began inside the first minute. After an exchange of seven or eight passes in the opening 20 seconds, the ball was swept out to Niall Chapman and his cross was knocked home at the far post to stun the home side. Skegness made it 2-0 after 15 minutes when John Jeffery crashed home a fierce drive from 25 yards. The visitors scored twice more after the break to seal victory. First Arron Taylor found the net with a volley from the right hand side of the penalty area and then Lee McLuckie completed the scoring with Skegness’ fourth 15 minutes from time. Final score was 4-0.

Coningsby moved up the table to fourth following a 4-1 home win over Wrangle United. The visitors got off to an abysmal start by falling behind to an opening goal from Steve Norton after just 24 seconds. If that wasn’t bad enough they went further behind a couple of minutes later when Sam Taylor scored. Wrangle found themselves under the cosh for a while and had goalkeeper, Dean Brian to thank for keeping them in the game as he pulled off a string of fine saves. Wrangle came more into the game during the closing stages of the first half. And they continued to show promise after the break and were rewarded with a goal when youngster Tim Bell reduced the arrears. Wrangle almost equalised when Bowie Houston’s point-blank range header somehow flew wide of a post. This miss proved costly as Coningsby stormed back to the other end almost immediately to go 3-1 ahead with a scorching drive from Stu Longbone which flew into the bottom corner of the net. The home side sealed victory when Sam Taylor added his second goal of the game.

Another local derby at Billinghay Athletic saw Sleaford Town hold their opponents to a goal-less draw.

Swineshead were minus four players for their visit to Croft United and finished up well beaten by the impressive league leaders. Dan Starkey opened the scoring midway through the first half when he shrugged off three tame challenges before firing home. And Croft were 2-0 ahead five minutes later when Lee Orrey scored. In the second half United continued on top and Orrey tapped in the third from close range before Ben Laud fired home from the edge of the box. Leroy Medina came off the bench to complete the scoring when he surged through the middle before slotting past the fifth goal past the keeper. Although Swineshead will admit they didn’t perform on the day, Croft looked invincible with Lee Orrey and Mark Lovelace causing plenty of headaches for their opponents in a 5-0 triumph.

Kirton Town narrowly defeated Gedney Drove End at Graves Park in a 3-2 scoreline. Stuart Bartholomew grabbed two goals for Town while Simon Webster also got on the scoresheet. Gedney, who will argue they deserved a share of the spoils, went close with goals from Dave Wilson (penalty) and Neil Armstrong.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division One

Old Doningtonians’ early-season form is baffling everyone as they found themselves on the end of another heavy defeat. Although Martin Fox and an own goal saw them register tow goals, visitors Holbeach Bank found their opponents far too charitable as they replied six times to run out 6-2 winners. It could have been a different story, though, when Old Dons were awarded a penalty when the score stood at 2-1 to the Bank. But the normally reliable sharp-shooter Chris Wing failed to find the net. And with that miss went all hopes of any reward.

Division One leaders, Spilsby Town were held to a goal-less draw at Swineshead Reserves in a tight game. For the visitors, Matt Thomas missed a couple of far post headers while Phil Roof went close in both halves. Mark Simons also shaved a Swineshead upright with a 30-yard free-kick while at the other end Lee Hunt hit the post in the closing stages as the home side threatened to take maximum points. Ady Hewerdine came to Spilsby’s rescue in the dying seconds of the game when the big keeper denied Swineshead with a finger-tip save.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Two

Freiston triumphed in the division’s top of the table clash against Fosdyke with a 7-2 scoreline. The home side would be the first to admit, however, that the margin did not reflect the visitors’ performance in a highly entertaining game. Indeed, it was Fosdyke who struck first with a well-taken goal from Andy Brown after just five minutes and they should have been well ahead before Aston Chase got Freiston back on level terms after 20 minutes. The home side went ahead a few minutes later when Dave Harker hit their second goal. Both defences were under pressure for the rest of the half. But unfortunately for Fosdyke they came up against some fine finishing from Aston Chase who completed his hat-trick to give his side a flattering 4-1 interval lead. After the break the Freiston defence took a battering before Fosdyke were rewarded with their second goal from Andy Brown after 50 minutes. The home defence made three goal-line clearances to thwart Fosdyke. And having weathered the pressure, they clinched victory with three further goals to leave the visitors shell-shocked. Chase claimed another goal while Dean Seiner netted two more fine efforts.

Wainfleet United took maximum points via a 2-1 home win against Spalding Harriers. Matt Crowson and Phil Simpson hit the crucial goals for United.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Three

Wrangle United Reserves and Westside Rangers Reserves produced a hatful of goals in a real topsy-turvy encounter. Westside succumbed to the lethal firepower of last season’s highest goalscorer in the whole league, Jimmy Brittain. Within 20 minutes Rangers found themselves 3-0 down. But they rallied before the break to reduce the arrears to 3-2. New signing, Danny Beecham bagged a debut goal with a cool finish before Mark Haynes slotted home a second after Matt Lee charged down the goalkeeper’s clearance. Rangers continued to battle away in the second half but they slowly tired and clinical finishing from the home side saw them score three more times to lead 5-2. The visitors managed to pull another goal back when a mazy run from Matt Lee culminated in the former left back scoring to give his team a glimmer of hope. Wrangle put paid to their opponents’ slim chance of salvaging something from the game with another three-goal blast to run out 8-3 winners.

Old Doningtonians made the journey to a rejuvenated Friskney side and goals from Mark Stanhope and Andy Barnett saw the visitors return home with a share of the spoils following A creditable 2-2 draw. After Old Dons had taken an early lead, Perrie Dale equaliSed for Friskney five minutes later. The Dons regained the lead before half time although Friskney should have been on level terms at the break but Gareth Williams missed from the penalty spot. Friskney keeper, Rob Holland kept his side in the game with some vital stops before they were finally rewarded late in the game when they salvaged a point through Neil Allen.

Nortoft United enjoyed a comfortable 4-0 home win over Park United Reserves. The goals came from Antony Tiffen, Rich Barker, Jason Osbourne and Dom Cridland.

Target Newspapers Challenge Cup round one

Marshalls carried their impressive league form over to the Challenge Cup when they travelled to Spalding Town. It was the home side who started the stronger and only some outstanding saves prevented Spalding from opening the scoring. Marshalls finally got into the game and they were rewarded with two goals from Daniel Warren and Wayne Beeson before Town replied before the break. Marshalls improved greatly after the break and substitute Craig Spooner put the result beyond Spalding’s reach with a double strike. Beeson grabbed his second goal of the game to complete the scoring. Final score was 5-1.

Westside Rangers and Tydd St Mary produced an excellent encounter at the Kirton Middlecott School with the home side squeezing through to the next round with a single goal victory. Both sides started brightly but defences stood firm early on. The nearest Rangers came to scoring was from a Kevin Manning volley that flew just over the bar after Will Scott had flicked the ball on. It was debutant, Scott who finally broke the deadlock when he punished a defensive error before slotting the ball home. Defences dominated the second half as the flowing football of the first half was nullified. Final score was 1-0.

Park United and Old Leake produced a seven-goal thriller at Carrington before the visitors edged through to the next round. Second Division Park went close to causing an upset by taking the game into extra time when the scores stood at 2-2 after 90 minutes. Chris Lawson (2), Sam Hill and Rob Staples were Old Leake’s match-winners with the crucial goals. The visitors had Jamie Skinner dismissed into the bargain. Park’s Carter grabbed all three of his side’s goals in a final score of 4-3.

Holbeach United Social had plenty of players to select from this week and it showed as they comfortably dumped Sutterton out of the competition following a 3-0 home win. Tom Panton struck twice while Andy Willows also got on the scoresheet.

September 23 round-up

Cropley’s Suzuki Division One

Spilsby Town Reserves made the lengthy journey to Tydd St Mary with just 11 players and Bob Green naming himself as their only substitute. The visitors had the better of the first half with Des Rook and Phil Roof missing great chances while Tydd’s best chance came after Town’s John Stern stumbled on the ball. But the home side failed to take advantage and the first period finished goalless. Spilsby continued to look threatening after the break and they had two strong penalty claims turned down by the impressive Barry Ingham in the middle. The visitors finally broke the deadlock after 55 minutes when Mark Simons slid a pass through for Roof to round the keeper and slot home. Tydd’s heads dropped and five minutes later they were 2-0 down when Jason Vaughan set up Dan Vines to score with a fierce shot. Mark Ingram made it 3-0 following Matt Thomas’s inviting cross and Dan Vines completed the scoring after good work by Des Rook. Final score was 4-0.

Westside Rangers’ unbeaten start to the season continued with a 3-3 draw against Old Leake. Rick Elsom, Kev Manning and DJ Wright hit the crucial goals for Rangers.

Two goals from Ryan Barker helped Swineshead Reserves to a 3-0 away win at Spalding Town. Barker’s double was followed by an Ashley Brighton effort while, at the other end, Swineshead keeper Phil McAllister preserved a clean sheet with a fine penalty save.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Two

After their opening day defeat at Fosdyke, Kirton Town Reserves have responded in fine style winning their last three games. Their latest victory was a 3-1 home win against Park Road Old Boys. Martin Durrant, Simon Collins and Adrian Dobrinski were all on target for Town.

A single Mike Parnham strike was enough to secure the points for Mareham United in their 1-0 home win over Coningsby Reserves.

Woodhall Spa United continued their impressive start to life in Division Two with a 5-1 home win against Park United. Lee Marshall was Woodhall’s goal-hero with a fine hat-trick while Richard Newell and Jonathan Kerry completed the scoring. Park’s reply came courtesy of an own goal.

The local derby at Fosdyke produced a five-goal thriller with Sutterton on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline. Andy Brown, Wayne Ash and an own goal secured the three points for the home side.

One of this season’s early favourites, Freiston travelled to Spalding and were undone by a tough-tackling Harriers side. The visitors started well enough and were denied a decent penalty claim but while the visitors protested long and loud the home side broke away to open the scoring at the other end after 10 minutes. Freiston continued to strive to get back into the game but despite a few dangerous free-kicks and corners they couldn’t find a way through. The Spalding side grabbed a crucial second goal five minutes before the break and a fortunate third put the result beyond Freiston five minutes into the second half when a cross drifted into the net off an upright. The game was wrapped up on the hour mark when the Harriers grabbed a fourth goal. The referee endured a difficult match throughout and he finally lost his patience with Harriers’ Mark Astley who was dismissed for a reckless tackle. Final score was 4-0. Harriers’ match-winners were Steve Carn (2), Simon Gratton and Marcin Marcinzynski.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Three

Friskney’s Garth Williams produced a solo star performance at Freiston Reserves when netting all three goals in his side’s 3-2 away win.

Wrangle United Reserves’ striker Matthew Parnham went one better when scoring all four of his side’s goals in a 4-1 away win at Park United Reserves. Tim Billingham scored for the second successive week for Park.

Marshalls dominated their match with Westside Rangers Reserves for long periods in a one-sided affair. The favourites for promotion broke the deadlock after constant pressure when Daniel White’s superb solo run was finished with a shot from his weaker ‘standing’ foot. Their lead was doubled on the half-hour mark when Jordan Dixon headed home at the far post after good work from White. The lively White then earned his side a penalty, which Wayne Beeson converted for his first goal of the season. Stacey Cartwright made it 4-0 five minutes later when he latched onto a Daniel Warren pass before firing home. Westside were rewarded for their efforts when an inswinging corner found its way in the league leaders’ net to make the final score 4-1. This was the first goal Marshalls had conceded in four games.

Mareham United Reserves held Billinghay Athletic Reserves to a 1-1 draw at home. Rick Harrod grabbed the Billinghay goal.

Holbeach United Social, currently struggling to raise a side when Holbeach United Reserves have a fixture, can take a certain amount of credit for getting their home game played. Unfortunately for Holbeach their efforts weren’t quite enough to gain any reward as they went down to a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Old Doningtonians Reserves. The visitors’ match-winning goals came from Scott Ekins and Richard Holstead.

Mr Trophies Fishtoft Cup

The big clash of the day saw Swineshead entertain Billinghay Athletic and it was the home side who got off to a perfect start scoring after just seven minutes with Richard Stukins’ towering header at the far post following a Steve Graham free-kick. Billinghay gradually clawed their way back into the game and they levelled on twenty minutes after Swineshead gave the ball away in midfield allowing their opponents to break quickly and score. The visitors then went ahead right on the stroke of half-time when a Swineshead defender, trying to block a shot, only succeeded in deflecting the ball past a bewildered Andy Stukins in the home goal. There were no further goals after the break as both defences tightened up and chances were few and far between. Richard Stukins was thwarted on a couple of occasions by the Billinghay keeper and at the other end Kyle Stainton made a great double block on the goal-line to keep his side in the tie. The final score was 2-1.

Fishtoft made their way to the east coast to take on Skegness Town Reserves and the Division One side rocked their opponents with a 20th minute opener when a fine header flashed into the home side’s net. Skegness were level before the break when, following a right wing corner, Ben Davison headed home the equaliser. The home side went in front on the hour mark when an Arron Taylor cross was deflected into his own net by an unfortunate defender. Ben Etches’ speculative lob then caught out the Fishtoft keeper for Skegness’ third and a Richard Toynton header sealed the victory following a Josh Whittam cross. Final score 4-1.

Both Sleaford Town Reserves and Croft United had changes forced upon them before their cup-tie last Saturday. Croft had to make eight changes from the previous week owing to their match coinciding with the wedding of Greg Barker, one of their players. Sleaford were awaiting late arrivals and had to kick off with nine men before there ranks were finally replenished. Kurt Crossley made the most of his recall to the line-up, scoring four of his side’s goals while central defender, Dan Halliday was rewarded for his role as make-shift striker, with the other goal in a 5-2 victory.

Coningsby also hit five in their home tie against Wyberton with two players responsible for all the goals. Lee Croft claimed a great hat-trick while Sam Taylor grabbed two goals. Final score was 5-1.

Kirton’s indifferent start to the season continued at Mareham United where the Division Two side caused somewhat of an upset. Goalkeeper, Dean Reynolds and Matthew Crunkhorn were both dismissed as Town went down 3-1. Michael Johnson hit a double-strike for Mareham while Ryan Benson was also on target for the home side. Simon Webster replied for Kirton.

Wrangle United moved into the next round with a comfortable win over a youthful Old Doningtonians side. Wrangle found themselves 3-1 ahead at the break and a further five goals followed in the second period. Gavin Bell was United’s hot-shot on the day scoring three of his side’s goals in an 8-2 victory. The other strikes came from Bowie Houston (2), Tim Bell, Danny Fenwick and Luke Brittain. The Young Dons’ goals came from Scott Hempsall and David Slaughter.

September 16 round-up

Cropley’s Suzuki Premier Division

There were only two top section matches on Saturday owing to several teams being involved in the first round of the Lincolnshire Junior Cup. The Premier Division games in question were at Sleaford Town and at Wyberton.

Skegness Town Reserves had a wonderful 4-2 away win at Sleaford Town Reserves. Liam Kishere hit both of the Sleaford strikes. But his two-goal haul wasn’t enough to prevent the east coast side from taking the three points. And the home scorer later blotted his copybook by getting himself sent off in the second half. Kishere struck twice in the first half before Skegness pulled a goal back just before the break when Ben Davison scored form the penalty spot. Sleaford shot themselves in the foot in the second half by losing their discipline and the referee lost patience with the home side as they amassed six yellows and a red card. The visitors then drew level after the break when Stuart Hall’s effort rebounded off the crossbar to Arron Taylor who returned the ball to Josh Whittam to fire home on 65 minutes. Sam Sleight’s delightful free-kick from outside the box put Skegness in front for the first time before Kishere was dismissed for a second bookable offence. Arron Taylor then wrapped up a hard fought victory with a fourth goal with 10 minutes remaining after Josh Whittam had charged down the goalkeeper’s clearance.

Wyberton are still looking for their first goal of the campaign after three outings. This time they went down to a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of Croft United. Leroy Medina claimed his second hat-trick of the season while new signing Mark Lovelace also got on the scoresheet. Croft were dealt a cruel injury blow midway through the first half when they lost Adam Cowdell. But they still did enough to take a slender one-goal lead at the interval. The visitors controlled proceedings during the second half and eventually ran out worthy and decisive winners.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division One

Westside Rangers kept up their promising start to the season with a superb 2-1 away win at highly fancied Spilsby Town Reserves. Rangers started brightly but failed to create any clear-cut chances early on and it was the home side (who included five first-teamers in their line-up), who made the first breakthrough when, following a defensive error, the ball fell kindly for Graham Blades who swept the ball into the net. The setback only seemed to spur on the visitors who, from thereon, dominated affairs with midfielder, Rick Elsom proving to be a dominant force. It was from some excellent work by Elsom that Rangers got back on level terms when the play-maker made some room for himself before unleashing a fierce drive which Town’s keeper could not hold onto and the lurking Kev Manning was on hand to slot the ball home. The second half was again one-way traffic as the rampaging Rangers team surprisingly controlled all areas of the park. The Spilsby goal frame was struck no less than four times as the visitors threatened to run riot. The winning goal came courtesy of an excellent finish from David Wright past the impressive Ady Hewerdine in the home goal who had helped keep his side in the game throughout. Final score was 2-1

Old Leake edged out Spalding Town 3-2 at their Community Centre ground. Adam Sinclair, Rob Staples and Ben Pell did the damage for Old Leake with the crucial goals.

North Sea United earned the first point of the season via a 2-2 draw against Swineshead Reserves. Rob Masters grabbed both of the Camp’s goals

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Two

Freiston defeated Coningsby at their Danny Flear ground by the flattering scoreline of 4-0. If Coningsby had taken their chances during the first period they could have been ahead by half-time. The sides were divided by a single Aston Chase goal at the interval after Dean Seiner had carved out the opening. Freiston went 2-0 ahead 10 minutes after the break when the hard working Seiner scored at the second attempt after his first effort had been parried out by the goalkeeper. Although Coningsby continued to create some good chances they fell further behind after 65 minutes when Chase claimed his second goal. Dean Seiner wrapped up the scoring shortly afterwards with a low shot into the corner for his own personal double.

Sutterton had a day they’ll want to forget when they entertained Kirton Town Reserves. Eight goals found the home side’s net as Kirton ran riot. Three players weighed in with all the goals as Cliff Langham (3), Martin Durrant (2) and Chris Hilton (2) were all on target for the visitors.

With both sides smarting from comprehensive defeats the previous week, Fosdyke and Park United started cautiously as neither side threatened much. Park probably edged the possession stakes during the first period. Fosdyke showed a marked improvement after the break and only some fine goalkeeping from veteran Darren Hunt kept the home side at bay. However, Fosdyke’s pressure finally told when Andy Brown controlled a right wing cross before turning to crash the ball into the net from close range. Dave Pell eased any remaining anxiety when he side-footed the ball home five minutes later.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Three

Park United Reserves manager Simon Hyland opted for a five-man midfield for their home game against Friskney in an attempt to plug the flow of goals following the previous weeks’ mauling. The plan worked well during the first half despite falling behind. But they clawed their way back into the game in the second half when the nippy Tim Billingham scored to put his side back on level terms. Unfortunately for the home side, the turning point of the game coincided with an injury to United’s key defender Shaun Saunders. Once their cultured defender had departed from the action the Park defence didn’t look quite so secure. And so it proved to be as Friskney hit three goals to run out 4-1 winners. Home scorers were Perrie Dale (2), Neil Allen and Garth Williams.

Wrangle United Reserves struck five times at Billinghay Athletic Reserves through Jimmy Brittain (3), Darren Elding and Brendon Barnes but still they went home empty-handed! Billinghay replied six times to take the points in an 11-goal thriller. Athletic’s six-shooters were Rick Harrod (2), Andrew Palmer, Ed Creasey, Steve Wilcox and Adam Weston

An unfortunate own goal settled the outcome at Wainfleet United where Black Bull United took part in their first league game of the season. The unlucky player was Wainfleet’s Adam Swannack.

Westside Rangers Reserves earned a valuable point at Old Doningtonians Reserves in a 2-2 draw. Matt Lea and Tom Eyre were Westside’s scorers while Old Dons salvaged a point following strikes from Dave Pitts and Trevor Wand.

Lincolnshire Junior Cup round one

Only Coningsby and Swineshead were successful in their quest to join the other Boston sides already handed byes into round two.

Lee Croft hit a fine hat-trick for Coningsby in their 6-2 home win against Langtoft United. Tom Reeson, Steve Norton and Martin Lynch were also on target in a fine Coningsby performance.

Swineshead also enjoyed a comfortable passage through to the first round following an 8-3 away victory at the Ship of Skegness. After Swineshead had stormed into a 3-0 lead, the home side recovered with a two-goal salvo to make it a more respectable scoreline at the half-way stage. Swineshead’s superiority and fitness came to the fore after the break and they stepped up a gear to run out 8-3 winners. Jack Houghton and Richard Stukins proved too hot to handle for the Ship outfit with the strike-force duo both claiming hat-tricks. Anthony Slater and Benn Houghton hit the other match-winning goals. The latter player left the action with a slight knock as a precautionary measure with this week’s Fishtoft Cup tie against Billinghay in mind.

Old Doningtonians made the lengthy two-hour journey to the other side of Gainsborough to take on Epworth Town. And with four 18-year-olds in their line-up it was always going to be a daunting task for the Boston League side. Although the youngsters will have gained valuable experience in the encounter there was no cup upset as Epworth comfortably made it through to the next round following a 5-1 victory. Old Dons’ goalscorer was young Martin Fox.

Wrangle United went out of the competition after going down 4-2 at home to Market Rasen. Wrangle’s goals came from Gavin Bell and Rob Griffiths.

Kirton Town also suffered a preliminary round KO blow when losing 1-0 away to Smiffy’s FC. Woodhall Spa lost 4-2 at home to Pointon while Gedney Drove End tumbled 5-2 on home soil against regular Lincoln League high-flyers Ivy Tavern.

Draw for round two (October 14): Billinghay Athletic v Sun FC or Fiddler FC; Fulbeck United v Fosdyke; Crosby Colts v Holbeach Bank; Tydd St Mary v Swineshead Institute; Plough (Skellingthorpe) v Wyberton; Croft United v Mitchells FC; Alford Town v Spilsby Town; Fishtoft v Deeping Sports; Pointon v Coningsby.

September 9 round-up

Cropley’s Suzuki Premier Division

RAF fireman Stephen Norton almost snuffed out the threat of Croft United single-handedly at Coningsby on Saturday. But the visitors salvaged a point with a late equaliser in a thrilling 4-4 draw. Coningsby had looked like causing an upset when they held a 3-1 lead thanks to Norton’s treble strike but Croft clawed their way back into the game to level the scores at 3-3. Again Coningsby appeared to have snatched the points when Norton was once again on the scoresheet with just five minutes remaining before visiting striker Dan Starkey hit his second goal of the game to make the final score 4-4. A Lee Orrey penalty and a Kurt Crossley effort were Croft’s other scorers.

Wrangle United went down to a narrow 1-0 home defeat against Sleaford Town despite dominating the game for long periods. The only goal of the game came after 34 minutes following a fine shot on the turn. Wrangle poured forward after the break but were unable to find a way through and Sleaford struggled to create any worthwhile chances but their single goal was enough to take the points as Wrangle’s forwards continually misfired in front of goal. When the home side did hit the target they found the Sleaford goalkeeper in inspired form.

Gedney Drove End made the long journey to Spilsby Town and although they enjoyed their fair share of possession during the first period, they found themselves 2-0 down at the break. For the first 15 minutes of the second half the visitors again competed well but Spilsby took full control during the last half hour, scoring three more times without reply to run out 5-0 winners. Chris Dunn hit two goals for Town while the other match-winning strikes came from Viv Jefferies, Graham Blades and Liam Papworth.

Kirton Town were forced to make no less than seven changes from the previous week and rookie goalkeeper Jamie Cox was compelled to don the number one jersey. Town were also lacking in defensive areas with centre-back, Neil Goodwin suffering from an injury.  Swineshead took full advantage scoring five times without reply with Jack and Benn Houghton causing havoc. Both strikers netted two goals apiece while Antony Slater was also on target. All the goals came in the first hour with Benn Houghton hitting the first two goals before half-time and Antony Slater added goal number three just after the restart. Jack Houghton scored his first goal of the game after 57 minutes when he headed home a Martin North cross and two minutes later the same player finished off a good move involving Karl Melton and Richard Stukins.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division One

West End Tigers made it two wins out of two with a 2-1 home victory over Swineshead Reserves. Nathan Padley and Martin Worth hit the match-winning goals for West End while a Michael Swain own goal replied for the visitors.

Another side with a 100 percent start is Spilsby Town Reserves who defeated North Sea United 2-0 at the Camp. In a physical game Des Rook proved too hot to handle for the prison side, scoring both of his team’s goals.

Stacey Blythe and Graeme Hunt scored the goals for Holbeach Bank in their 2-2 home draw with Old Leake. The Bank will be relatively satisfied with the point considering they had a player sent off. Chris Lawson and Rob Staples grabbed the Old Leake goals.

There was another 2-2 draw at Fishtoft where Westside Rangers had Jody Betts and Michael Burt to thank for their point away from home. Fishtoft had taken an early lead before Jody Betts seized upon Neil Sinha’s through ball and the striker went on to round the keeper and coolly slot the ball home. The visitors went in front five minutes later following good link-up play from David Wright and Neil Wheatley culminating in the latter crossing low for Michael Burt to tap home from close range. The second half was a more even affair and Fishtoft finally saved the day with a late equaliser. Westside were then reduced to 10 men and were forced to defend desperately to keep their opponents out. The home side’s goals came from Paul Wroot and Ady Almond.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Two

It was certainly a case of unlucky 13 for Park United when they entertained a new-look Freiston side. The visitors fielded several new signings in their first game of the season and everything soon clicked into gear as 13 goals found their way into the home side’s net.

Freiston were 2-0 ahead inside the opening ten minutes with a double-strike from Aston Chase although Park did have their chances to get on the scoresheet early on but they either failed to hit the target or were thwarted by goalkeeper, Matthew Bainbridge. Dean Seiner then took over firing home a hat-trick before the break as Freiston sailed into a comfortable 5-0 lead. Park had no answer to Seiner’s pace and deadly finishing as the in-form striker went on to score four more times to claim a personal haul of seven goals before he was substituted on the hour mark. Aston Chase then added a further treble to take his own tally to five as the score moved on to 12-0 before Park reduced the arrears through a Steve Adcock penalty. Freiston’s new signing Mario Horvath completed the scoring after coming on as substitute to make the final score 13-1. Both sides unfortunately had a player dismissed in added time, which did not reflect the sporting attitude of the two teams.

Simon Collins and Martin Durrant earned Kirton Town Reserves their first victory of the season when they recorded a 2-1 away win at Spalding Harriers. The Spalding side’s goal came from Lewis Field.

Woodhall Spa United held a 1-0 lead for a major part of their home game against Mareham United when Lee Scanlan scored after just two minutes but the visitors spoiled the party with an equaliser on 87 minutes. Final score was 1-1.

Park Road Old Boys recorded a 4-1 home win over Fosdyke thanks to goals from Tim Gilbert, Adam Smith, Craig Andrews and Ash Allen. Fosdyke's Andy Brown had given his side the lead with a well-taken goal before Park Road scored twice to lead at the interval. The home side took control in the second period and only some fine stops from Fosdyke keeper, Chris West kept the score-line respectable.

In the division’s only other game, Coningsby Reserves sunk Sutterton 2-0 in a dour encounter.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Three

Billinghay Athletic Reserves made it a thoroughly miserable day for the Park United club. While the first team were leaking 13 goals in Division Two, their second-string was also on the receiving end going down 7-1. Billinghay’s magnificent seven came from Richard Harris (2), Matt Pask, Eddie Creasey, Matt Dring and Steve Wilcox. Park’s reply came from Mark Skinner.

Westside Rangers Reserves edged out Holbeach United Social by the odd goal in five following a 3-2 home win. Matt Lea hit two goals while Matthew Bingham also got on the scoresheet. The Holbeach side went close with goals from Tom Panton and Phil Dickinson.

One of the main favourites for promotion, Marshalls, recorded their second successive victory following their 2-0 home win. Both goals came in the first half with Craig Spooner proving to be Marshalls' match-winner with a double strike.

Another of the new sides, Freiston Reserves kicked off their campaign with a 5-0 away win at Mareham United Reserves. Jamie Button struck a fine hat-trick while Lee Hoff and Troy Ayton were also on target.

Nortoft were another team who got their season under way with a debut victory when they entertained Wrangle United Reserves. Chris Massingham and Anthony Tiffen hit the all-important goals.

James Eley Sports Cup

In round one of the James Eley Sports Cup, Tydd St Mary recorded their first win of the season when they made the long journey to Wainfleet in the James Eley Sports Cup. The Saints were the better side during the early stages and deservedly took the lead after 38 minutes when Shaun Dignam took advantage of some hesitation in the Wainfleet ranks to strike a 30-yard free-kick straight into the net. The second half saw Wainfleet come back into the game and they were awarded a penalty after 52 minutes that Matt Crowson took but Stu Parker saved well to keep Tydd in the driving seat. Parker then pulled off a string of excellent saves in a man of the match performance to send the Saints through to the next round.

In the other first round tie, Spalding Town also went through courtesy of a single-goal victory at Black Bull United. Glen Dumper scored the crucial goal midway through the second half. The Bull had several chances to have salvaged something out of the game but they found Town’s keeper, Stu Ward in fine form.

September 2 round-up

Cropley’s Suzuki Premier Division

Reigning champions Billinghay Athletic suffered a miserable summer after their administration team called it a day en-bloc. There were also constant rumours that several key players were being tempted with a move to near neighbours, Sleaford Town. However, Terry Edwards and David Smith came to the rescue and stepped into the posts of secretary and chairman respectively. The club pleaded with The management committee to postpone their opening game(s) but unfortunately once the fixtures had been arranged, the rule book states that games can only be brought forward. Also clubs are given plenty of opportunity, after the June annual meeting, to declare any dates that they require as “blank” Saturdays.

Billinghay only had enough players for one side for last Saturday’s fixtures despite both the first team and reserves side having games. Fortunately for the club they arranged a referee’s inspection on Saturday morning and he declared the pitch unfit owing to it being too soft in the areas where recent drainage work had been undertaken. The team was then sent to play at Holbeach United Social in Division Three where they suffered a 4-0 defeat. The majority of first team players have since been registered and will therefore be eligible for their Premier Division game against Swineshead this weekend.

Swineshead will be hoping for a repeat performance against the champions, following last Saturday’s fine 4-3 home win against Coningsby. Striker Jack Houghton will also be hoping for a repeat showing after his fine hat-trick helped sink Coningsby. Swineshead’s other goal came from Tim Tyler. It was Tyler who struck first for Swineshead after 20 minutes when his left-foot volley flew into the top corner before Coningsby levelled two minutes later. Jack Houghton scored the first of his goals on the half hour mark when he curled the ball in direct from a corner and a sublime finish from Swineshead’s hot-shot made it 3-1 following good work from defender Jamie Butler. Coningsby reduced the arrears just before the break and got back on level terms five minutes into the second half. The winning goal came after 63 minutes when Houghton broke clear before finishing in style. Coningsby threw men forward to try and salvage some reward but a determined home defence held onto the three precious points.

Kirton Town made the journey to the east coast to take on one of this season’s favourites for the title, Croft United. The visitors started brightly and could have opened the scoring on one or two occasions before Croft finally got off the mark.

Town’s Danny Keal twice burst through the Croft rearguard early on but failed to beat the keeper and striker Neil Featherstone also went close before Croft took control. New signing, Leroy Medina proved to be Croft’s match-winner, scoring a fine hat-trick in a 6-1 score-line. Lee Orrey, Louis Mill and Joe Harris wrapped up the scoring. Dale Atkinson tempted striker Adam Shinn out of premature retirement, signing him on just before the game and the ex-Wyberton striker managed to get on the scoresheet for the visitors.

Newly promoted sides, Gedney Drove End and Wrangle United clashed at Top Farm and the honours were even in a 2-2 draw. Gedney’s recent signing, old-boy, Alan Fines did his side no favours by getting himself red-carded after just five minutes for something he said to the referee. But the home side’s 10 men dug in and will be pleased with a point at the end of the day. Wrangle’s Paul Chester had earlier given the visitors the lead when he fired home from close range. The 10 men responded with an equaliser just before the break when Dave Wilson scored from an acute angle. Wrangle introduced substitute Luke Brittain to the action after the interval and he quickly made an impact on the game when he powered his way through the home defence before coolly slotting the ball past the advancing keeper. Gedney keeper Steve Phillips pulled off a string of fine saves to prevent Wrangle from adding to their score before Neil Armstrong saved the day for the home side when he levelled the scores with a fierce drive that gave the visiting keeper no chance.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division One

Newly promoted, West End Tigers were dealt a double body-blow at North Sea United when they made their debut in Division One. The visitors soon found themselves trailing 2-0 after just 20 minutes to goals from Rob Masters and Andree Whitter as a swirling wind made life difficult for the Tigers. The Boston side bounced back, however, and they reduced the arrears just before the interval when Jamie Hurling powered home a scorching drive. West End drew level in the second half when substitute, Nathan Padley calmly slotted the ball home through the keeper’s legs and the inspirational Paul Vaughan put his side in front for the first time. North Sea had no answer to the visitors’ lively attack and Padley added a fourth after good work from Martin Jolly down the right flank. Nicky Syndercombe had the final say with a deserved goal to make the final score 5-2.

Old Leake and Swineshead Reserves were all-square at 1-1 at the half-way stage at the Community Centre, Rob Staples scoring the home side’s goal in a wind-assisted first half. Swineshead made more of the gusty conditions in the second period and sealed victory with two goals. The visitors’ win was secured with goals from Andy Thompson, Harry Houghton and Scott Williams.

Old Doningtonians made the long journey to Spilsby Town Reserves and a gutsy first half display saw them hold their opponents to a 0-0 half time scoreline. The home side had the benefit of being able to call on a couple of first-teamers, who were without a fixture on the opening Saturday and two big-gun substitutes, Des Rook and Chris Dunn entered the action to steal the points. Both Dunn and Rook scored in a 2-0 victory to give Town the points.

Westside Rangers made the long journey to Tydd St Mary for their opening game in Division One and a 4-0 victory made their journey well worth it. Tydd made their opponents work for their victory as they enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges. It took a Kev Manning free-kick from 25 yards to settle Rangers’ nerves and the goal gave the Boston side a slender interval advantage. Neil Sinha’s excellent close ball skills released Jody Betts and the speedy striker had his shirt pulled as he threatened the Tydd goal. Lee Nicholson calmly slotted home the spot-kick. Debutant Neil Wheatley then added a third goal when sloppy defending allowed him to close in on goal following a mazy run and although the keeper parried his initial shot the ball rebounded off the attacker and rolled into the net. A long range screamer from Sinha sealed victory.

Fishtoft’s comfortable 5-0 away win at Spalding Town was secured with goals from Ady Almond (2), Michael Lomax, Pete Coonan and Declan Wilson.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Two

Danny Cottingham scored twice for Coningsby Reserves in a 4-2 home victory against Spalding Harriers. Craig Watson and Nathan Turner were also on target for the home side.

Mareham United narrowly defeated Wainfleet United at home in a 2-1 victory. Wainfleet’s Matt Crowson levelled the scores at half-time from the penalty spot after Mareham had opened the scoring. Mareham grabbed a second half winner to send Wainfleet home empty-handed. The home side’s match-winners were Michael Johnson and Liam Jaines.

A second half strike from Fosdyke’s prolific marksman, Andy Brown secured the three points in a hard fought 1-0 home win over Kirton Town Reserves. The home side lost the toss and were forced to battle against the elements during the first period but stubborn resistance kept the half time score goalless with young goalkeeper Chris West pulling off a couple of fine saves to keep his opponents out. Fosdyke grabbed what turned out to be the winning goal immediately after the restart when Andy Brown pounced after the keeper failed to hold a Liam Pitam strike. Despite dominating in the wind assisted conditions the woodwork and some brave keeping prevented any further scoring.

Park United went down to a narrow 3-2 defeat at home when Park Road Old Boys were the visitors. John McGarrel and Will Carter scored for the home side but it wasn’t enough on the day.

Cropley’s Suzuki Division Three

Boston Saturday League’s new boys, Marshalls got off to a flying start with a 7-0 home win over Wrangle United Reserves. Striker Daniel Warren looks full of goals for his new club as he plundered a opening-day hat-trick while Daniel White grabbed a double strike. Further goals came from Stacey Cartwright and Michael Gardner.

Tom Panton of Holbeach United Social was another opening day hat-trick hero while Phil Dickinson completed the scoring in a 4-0 win against Billinghay Reserves.

Steve Holstead scored twice for Old Doningtonians in their 3-3 home draw against Mareham United Reserves. Barry Taylor hit the other Old Dons’ goal.
