May 13 round-up: Dixie Deane Memorial
Cup final Magnet Tavern 6, The
Newcastle 3 The concluding showpiece match of the Sunday League
season — the Dixie Deane Memorial Cup final — took place at Wyberton FC on
Sunday morning with the Castle attempting to gain revenge of their earlier cup
defeat against Magnet Tavern. The Tavern had different ideas, though, and
were themselves aiming for a clean sweep of trophies. They started off in
dominant fashion by taking full control of the first half. And they swept to
a 3-0 lead with goals coming at regular intervals. Mark Angel opening the
scoring with a fine strike. The club’s top scorer Jimmy Britton then added
two great goals. Ty Fravigar came closest for the Castle – his shot flying just
wide of the far post after the player had rounded a defender. With the Castle
having a re-shuffle at the break, they came out fighting and netted twice in
10 minutes, both goals coming initially from Jordan Dixon corners. The first
found Fravigar. And with a great dummy he set up Lee Dakin to fire home a
sweet volley. The second came from Dan Fenwick with a powerful header. At 3-2
it looked like the game could go either way. But the Magnet upped the pace
and a fine finish from man of the match Paul Vaughan made it 4-2. Laszlo
Lovas scored a cracking volley to increase the lead still further, only to
see the Castle reduce the arrears – Scott Hutchinson with a superb goal
curling it over at a tight angle to leave Maddison stranded in the Magnet
net. But the league champions had the final say with Leroy Medina scoring the
final goal in a sporting encounter. The Magnet were then presented with both
the Dixie Deane Memorial Cup and the Premier Division championship trophy and
congratulated on completing the “Sunday treble.” |

May 6 round-up: Workforce Unlimited
Premier Division The last two
Premier Division games of the season were played out on Sunday to finalise
the standings – with the Magnet Tavern taking the championship crown and the
Newcastle ended as worthy runners-up – both teams taking the three points on
offer in their separate fixtures. The champions had to play their match with 10 men
as they had sent two teams to compete in the five-a-side competition which
took place at Peterborough – one team winning through to meet other area
champions which will take place in London – so well done to them. Back to the
local scene and the Magnet produced a fine all-round performance to take a
7-1 victory over the Mill Inn. Jimmy Britton was the first to score with a
fine strike. Ross Nichols increased the lead following some good passing
play. After the break it was one-way traffic for most of the half. Lathon
Millar hit one and Jimmy Britton completed his hat-trick to increase the lead
for the home team before the Mill then managed to pull one goal back. But by
then it was really all over for them. Nichols completed his brace and Richard
Stukins fired home to complete the score at 7-1, with the Mill sadly bowing
out of Sunday football. Helen Fulcher-Ward had an excellent game in the
middle. The Newcastle
had a tougher time against a hard-working Boston College side and certainly
didn’t have it all their own way. In a close fought first half the game went
into the break with honours even at 2-2. While the College couldn’t break
down the Castle in the second period, the Castle continued to produce some
excellent work and won through with a 4-2 victory. Jamie Skinner scored his
16th and 17th goals of the season for the College while
Jack Smith and Mark Lovelace each bagged a brace for the Castle – Lovelace
scoring from the spot for his first. |
