February 25 round-up: With the Boston Borough Council-supervised pitches under
water on Sunday, only one game went ahead — and this hastily switched at the
last minute, thanks to the co-operation of both clubs incvolved, the referee
and Boston Town FC for providing the playing surface. Workforce Unlimited
Division One The game between the Axe and Cleaver and Eagle Harvesters
was both fair and entertaining. The Eagle made the better start but failed to
convert chances and then found themselves 2-0 down following some hesitant
defending. The Axe welcomed back
Spencer ‘The Sizzler’ Swadling – and his commanding presence led to the first
goal, his pass finding Nathan Padley who outpaced the Harvesters’ back line before
cutting a great low cross into the box for Shaun Lea to smash home. Their
second goal came from a Steve Bursnell header set up by a neatly-struck
free-kick by Kev Orton. The second half followed a similar pattern with the
Eagle again having the stronger opening period, but again they succumbed to a
goal on a counter attack. Nathan Padley took the ball up in his own half,
thundered his way up the field and coolly chipped the debutant Eagle keeper
Duncan Browne. At 3-0 it looked to be
all over for the Harvesters, but with their manager made some deft changes,
bringing on Martin Good and James Cook on to the flanks and they had an
immediate effect. Some good approach
work from Steve Siggee gave Good the opportunity to pull one goal back, chipping
the keeper with a sublime finish from 20 yards. Cook was again involved in the second Eagle goal as Siggee beat
the offside trap and rounded the Axe keeper. With the Eagle in high spirits,
they kept probing and it was no surprise when they levelled the game with 10
minutes left on the clock. Lukasz Gierejkiewicz rounded the Axe keeper after
a flowing attack to make it 3-3. The
Eagle almost made it a perfect comeback, a late attack on the goal was bravely
saved by Koran Darrigan. Chris West complimented the battling spirit his side
produced in their final game of an abridged season. |

February 18 round-up: Dixie Deane Memorial Cup A great
performance from the Ship Inn stunned high-flyers Magnet Tavern – but despite
gaining their first point of the season, the Ship could not stop the Magnet
from making it to the final of this competition. On a heavy pitch both sides struggled to gain any
advantage in the first half and the score remained 0-0 at the break. The second
half continued in the same fashion until super-sub Leroy Medina came on to
score a fine goal almost straight away.
Sloppy defending and great team-work from the home side saw them
equalise shortly after through Andrew Bonfim. Richard Stukins restored the
lead for the visitors but the Ship again levelled the scores – Charlie Cepeda
hit a great cross to Ricardo Periera who blasted the ball home giving
Maddison no chance in the Magnet goal. The Magnet upped the tempo but were
unable to breach the Ship defence for a third time. A poor defensive display from the Mill Inn handed
College all three points as they lost out of having any chance of appearing
in the final with this defeat. College controlled the game from start to
finish and it was only some good work from the Mill’s goalie Frazer Hallam
that kept the score in single figures! The Mill’s goals came from Ben
Houghton after some good work by Dan Tuplin, and Rob Marsden latched on to a
Glenn Hislop flick-on. Seiner hit College’s first goal with a fine left foot
volley, his second was a repeat performance.
Chris Spiller notched his first for the Club following a fine
run. The match was finally won when
Jamie Skinner scored a great individual goal – which he fully deserved as he
led the attack with some non stop running Workforce
Unlimited Division One
Britannia
Rangers’ season went from bad to worse, with a heavy defeat inflicted upon
them by new boys Black Swan Coningsby. Carl Wall opened the scoring and goals
rained in regularly with the half time score 5-1. After the break the Swans
hit four more without reply. The Brit were rewarded for some surging runs
with two more goals in the second period. The game belonged to the Swans
though who have done well to secure runners-up spot in the first season.
Their scorers were Lee Croft (4), Carl Wall (3), Stuart Thomson (2) – one
penalty, Sam Taylor and Karl Brown. Anthony Slater scored a superb hat-trick for
Harchester as they ran out 4-1 winners with Harvesters having one of their
poorest games this season. Slater’s’ first came midway through the first half
– a lovely ball from Dom Cridland sent him clear to round the keeper. The
second followed shortly after following good work in the centre allowing Adam
Lester to slot a ball straight to Slater who didn’t waste the opportunity to
double his tally and the scoreline. With the Eagle goalie having to be subbed
due to injury at half-time, Mike Pearson volunteered to man the posts but two
quick goals in the second half finished the game. Harvesters pulled one back
in between with a superb free-kick from Lukasz Gierejkiewicz which the keeper
failed to hold. Slater grabbed his hat-trick after a rebound fell to him in
the box. Captain Dom Cridland got the fourth from a corner to open his
Harchester account. Only needing one point to clinch the title caused some
jitters amongst a nervy Carpenters Arms team in their game against Railway
Hotel. Chances were few and far between but Leon Pycock smashed home from
inside the box to give the Carps a 1-0 half-time lead. Early in the second
half Scott Wiseman unleashed a long range strike which was superbly saved by
the Railway keeper. Railway then equalised with a header, Mickey Hill making
no mistake. At 1-1 the game became stretched but Carps pinched the winner –
guaranteeing them the top spot. Declan Wilson teed up Chris Marshall for his
third goal of the season. The Carps paid credit to the much-improved Railway
team. |

February 11 round-up: There are now reports as all scheduled
matches were postponed due to waterlogged pitches. |

February 4 round-up: Results went
more or less to form in Workforce Unlimited Division One on Sunday, the two
leaders winning their games – albeit by the narrowest of margins for Black Swan
Coningsby, while Carpenters overcame Axe and Cleaver to clinch the league
title. Meanwhile, at the foot of affairs Railway Hotel changed places with
Harchester United to go bottom after the latter took the honours in their
clash by 1-0. Dixie Deane Memorial Cup The Newcastle
had a 14-0 victory over 10-man Park Avenue. In a one-sided affair Mark
Lovelace netted in the first minute and The Newcastle never looked back from
then on, being 4-0 in front at the interval with the pick of the goals being
a 35-yarder from Steve Murphy. The Castle dominated the second half, Park
going down to nine men. Lovelace netted a further four goals to give him five
for the game and 35 for the season. Lee Dakin notched a hat-trick, Jordan
Dixon netted two and Steve Murphy added another to make his tally two for the
game, the others coming from Jamie Hurling and an own goal. Newcastle paid
credit to a young Park side who never gave up but they were let down by
players not turning up and finding Newcastle in rampant mood. Workforce Unlimited Division One
The first half
between Axe and Cleaver and table-toppers Carpenters Arms was goalless, the
Axe having the better of the chances while Carpenters’ best effort came when
a Dean Appleby shot flew just wide. The breakthrough came for the Carpenters
when a surging Bob Warby run led to Declan Wilson having an easy tap-in early
in the second half. The lead was soon doubled when a smooth passing move with
Wilson, Leon Pycock and Joe Talbot led to Pete Coonan slotting into the corner.
With only five minutes left, Bob Warby turned provider again as an immaculate
through ball released Pycock who out-sprinted the Axe back line and finished
well to make it 3-0. The only bright spot for the home side was an impressive
debut for Cliff Langham. Eagle Harvesters created the better early chances
in their game against Black Swan Coningsby but failed to take advantage
before Black Swan broke the deadlock against the run of play with a 25-year
screamer. Despite the best efforts of Browne, Ling and McGarel, Black Swan
increased their lead before the break to go in 2-0 in front. They continued
in the same vein at the start of the second period, punishing Eagle
Harvesters for not taking chances to go in front 3-0. A mistimed challenge by
James Cook in the box gave Black Swan the chance to make it 4-0 before
Harvesters brought on Good and McKenna and with the pack reshuffled began to
make a game of it. Chris Lawson struck a good left-foot drive to pull a goal
back and Gary Ling made it 4-2 with a volley as the ball dropped over his
head. Chris Maltby drilled home after a goalmouth scramble to set up a
rousing finish and Gary Ling had a chance at the end to level but failed to
make a clean contact to leave Black Swan 4-3 winners, their goals coming via a
hat-trick from Martin Lynch and one from Carl Wall. Harchester United lifted
themselves off the bottom of the table with a tight 1-0 victory over fellow
strugglers Railway Hotel. Neither side had the better of the first half,
Anthony Slater coming closest for Harchester. The second period saw United
looking for the win as they pushed forward and their reward came courtesy of
substitute Wayne Blackham who slotted home in the bottom corner. Railway
Hotel came back strongly, the United defence having to withstand heavy late
pressure, but they held on to take the deserved three points. |
