Sunday Cup winners Magnet Tavern FC after their extra time success over the Newcastle

Sharman Burgess Sunday Cup final

It was a battle of the local big boys in the Sharman Burgess Sunday Cup final with Magnet Tavern and The Newcastle going head to head in part one of their Sunday League cup final clashes!

The Castle took the lead after only 10 minutes. Scott Hutchinson’s powerful run from midfield took him clear to score with a good finish. With 15 minutes of the first half remaining Magnet drew level through a Leroy Medina goal. And the scores remained level at the break. There were few clear chances for either side in the opening period of the second half, but drama unfolded with the Castle twice clearing off the line from Magnet attacks while, at the other end, the Castle themselves were denied a ‘goal’ when they believed that Hutchinson had scored again – only to see the officials wave play on. With five minutes left on the clock the usually dependable Mark Lovelace missed a clear chance to grab the winner for the Castle and then the Tavern keeper Nick Maddison pulled off two fine saves from the same player to ensure the game went into extra time.

With both sides battling to grab the winning goal and avoid the lottery of spot-kicks, Magnet’s Ian Dunn came close with a 35-yard effort that rattled the Castle’s crossbar – the same player made amends five minutes from the end of the second period by scoring from close range following a corner to give the victory to the Magnet Tavern.

The second bout will take place in the Dixie Deane Memorial Cup final, which is scheduled for Sunday May 13, kick-off 11am at Wyberton FC. Will the Castle get their revenge – or will the Magnet reign supreme?

April 22 round-up:

Workforce Unlimited Premier Division

With both scheduled fixtures being postponed, there are no details to report from the latest weekend of the Boston Sunday League.

April 15 round-up:

Workforce Unlimited Premier Division

With just one League game scheduled for the day, the action took place at Sutterton and it certainly provided an entertaining game.  The Magnet played the first 15 minutes with just nine men and it was Park Avenue, taking advantage of their extra numbers, who took the lead. With some good work down the left side, David Slaughter got on the end of a good cross. Cutting across, he first beat the advancing defender before sliding the ball past the outstretched arms of the Tavern goalie. The Magnet then equalised through Leroy Medina who coolly slotted home after beating three Park players. And they also then saw additional players come on to take them up to the full compliment.

The game swung from one end to the other with both teams missing chances. But just as it looked like the teams were going into the break on level terms, Park spurned a good scoring opportunity. The ball, having been played into the box and deflected off the goalie, fell to the normally reliable Matthew Bates – but he skied his shot and when it fell, Paul Barker saw his drive hit the underside of the bar and fall into the arms of the Tavern keeper. He then kicked the ball down the pitch and Magnet made no mistake to take a 2-1 half time lead, Medina completing a brace.

After the break Magnet increased their lead still further, Jimmy Britton grabbing the first of two after some good pressure in the box.  Paul Barker reduced the deficit only to see the visitors score again following some excellent one-touch football, Leon Kitta completing a good move. Matthew Bates redeemed himself after his earlier miss when taking the ball from his own half. He then drew out the keeper and slotted the ball past him to create an exciting last 10 minutes. On the 85th minute, though, it was all over as the Magnet’s Britton completed the 5-3 scoreline from the penalty spot.

April 1 round-up:

Workforce Unlimited Premier Division

The talk of the Boston Sunday League after the latest programme of action was all about Magnet Tavern’s rampant and ruthless goal spree against a hapless Ship Inn outfit when their Premier Division meeting ended with a remarkable rugby-style 32-0 scoreline.

Man of the match for Tavern was Nick Lovelace who scored his maiden hat-trick — indeed, his first goals this season too. The half-time score alone resembled a near record scoreline on its own at 16-0. And the game continued in similar fashion in the second period — although some of the Ship’s players could take no more and the team were reduced to eight for much of the second half. Magnet paid tribute to the remaining players who managed to stay the course until the final whistle blew.

The scorers were John Rutherford (eight), Jimmy Britton (seven), Nick Lovelace (three), Paul Vaughan (three), Mark Wakefield (three), John Reeson (three), Ben Chapman (two), Nick Maddison, John Chand and new signing Russell Murphy. Meanwhile, Steve Appleby and substitute Mark Thompson were the only players not to get their names on the Magnet scoresheet.

Workforce Unlimited Shield

On a glorious Sunday afternoon it seemed only fitting that the Division One champions and runners-up battled it out for the right to lift the Workforce Unlimited Shield.

An even first half at the Tattershall Road home of Boston Town produced only two clear opportunities for the Carpenters Arms and the Black Swan Coningsby twice saw the ball pass the face of the goal. Carps’ captain Dean Appleby came closest with a good header. In the second half the deadlock was finally broken when a Scott Wiseman free-kick was met by a firm header from top scorer, Declan Wilson.

Black Swan tried in vain to level things but dependable striker and Division One leading marksman Lee Croft wasn’t getting the service from his midfield and they saw a penalty appeal turned down. A flowing counter attack allowed man-of-the-match Wiseman to play in the speedy Leon Pycock who rounded the keeper and slotted home. The Carps defended their lead brilliantly with excellent displays notably coming from Bob Warby and Andy James to help secure the trophy and complete the double via a 2-0 scoreline.

Dixie Deane Memorial Cup

The Mill and Boston College both approached the league committee to request that the original Dixie Deane Memorial Cup game be played as a double header as the clubs were due to meet next week in the league and this was agreed.

The Mill started and ended proceedings game with just 10 men and a weakened side at that. Nobby Goy took the keeper’s gloves and proved to be the star of the game with a number of class saves. The College were the first to score, Jamie Skinner latching on to a good through ball before finding the net.

After the interval it was the Mill who created the better chances and they were rewarded for their efforts from the penalty spot, Andy Brown making no mistake. College took the lead for a second time, this time Daniel White with a fine effort, but the Mill kept chasing the game and levelled through Rob Marsden. Both teams had good chances to win it, but both keepers put in some excellent work to keep the honours even.
