Round-up
for week ending April 27
Boston
Standard Premier Division
A shock win for Harry ‘Lottery’ Lee this week in the top
section saw the title virtually handed to Martyn Palmer. Harry beat contender
Graham Sharp. The game was no classic as Harry hit his usual array of scores
(the lowest being 3) while he also hit a 180 as his scoring range
dramatically varied. He found himself 2-0 up before Graham really got going
with a 19-dart leg to make it 2-1. But missed doubles then cost Graham the
chance to draw level as Harry pounced to hit a 70 checkout to go 3-1 up. Leg
five saw a battling Graham checkout on 86 on the bull to stay in the match at
3-2. But he had no answer for leg six that came as a bolt out the blue. Harry
hit scores of 180, 123, 28, 100 and 70 (out) for a match-winning 15-dart leg.
The top of the table encounter between Ady Parker and
Colin Hewson failed to reach great heights. A tense match got the better of
both players as Ady found some strange trajectory with his darts to hit the
doubles and go 3-0 up as Colin once again became “miss-man” instead of
‘Hit-Man’ although he did take leg four. But it was too little too late as
Ady boosted his chances with a 4-1 win. Dave Hasnip must have feared the worst as he tried to
avoid being another high-flying casualty of
Harry ‘Lottery’ Lee. But it was not the case as Dave cruised to a 4-1
win with 19 and 18-dart legs, the highlight including a 100 checkout. This was the division’s best and it was equalled by Tony
Hillyard when he faced Trev Day. Tony also hit a 180 in an 18-dart leg as he,
too, raced to a 4-1 win — but with a lot more darts thrown than Dave had
needed. Martyn Palmer once again showed his class up against a
difficult opponent in Kev ‘Grinder’ Lenton. Although Kev had chances to take
a 2-0 lead, he failed to take the opportunity gifted to him and trailed 2-0.
This became 3-0 after a 19-dart leg but a resilient Kev stuck to the task,
taking leg four to trail 3-1. Martyn killed the game off in style scoring
140, 180 and 131 to leave bull and the chance of a brilliant 10-dart leg.
Although he missed, he went on to notch his 24th straight win with
a 25.33 average (division’s best). A “battle Royal” took place next as Deb and son Chris
clashed. It has been known for Chris to beat his mum and for Deb to throw her
darts in the Haven as a losing bet!
But there was no upset on the form book this year as Deb gained a 4-0
win. It was a damage limitation exercise next as Graham Sharp returned to
take on Derek Johnson. Thankfully for Graham, Derek’s run of poor form and
bad shirt choice continued, allowing the former to gain a 4-0 win, leaving
Derek in need of a shirt sponsor for next season! The bottom two battled out the final game of the night.
And despite Richard Pearson going 1-0 down to Kev Lenton, he battled back to
win 4-1 against a beleaguered Kev. The untimely withdraw of Pete Reid due to work
commitments means a points deductions for the second half results. Thankfully
the top six had all to play Pete, so any damage caused is minimal on to the
action. Rob Scrupps almost pulled off the shock result in the
division. Up against Darren Butler, somehow Rob found himself 2-1 ahead with
darts at doubles to win. But Darren used his get out of jail free card to
somehow escape with a 78 checkout and a 3-2 win, hitting a 21.07 average
(division’s best). Nathan
Richardson had an excellent night. With a double, he ended all hopes Redvers
Dickinson had of staying in the top three with a 3-0 win and a 20.53 average.
Then he followed up with a 3-0 win over Pedro Silva. This time he added a
20.31 average to pick up maximum
points. Rob Scrupps was then back in action and a 3-1 win over
Mick Flynn was a nice consolation for a hard night’s work. Daniel Martin
suffered yet another defeat as his season threatens to end with nothing. The
youngster seems to be falling apart towards the end after being to the fore
most of the campaign. A 3-2 defeat was not what he needed after leading 2-1. Ben Carr lost 3-1 to Kev Dickinson which means he should
be the only player relegated because the withdrawal of Pete Reid leaves the
league with 16 players, effectively saving anyone else from the drop. Rob Birtwhistle brought Dick Taylor’s winning run to an
end. Trailing 1-0 and in a spot of double trouble, Dick allowed Rob to claw
his way back in to the match to gain a 3-1 win. Finally Mick Vinters found
those all important doubles to gain a flattering 3-0 win over Mick Parker to
stay in the hunt in third place. John Smith’s Challenge Long time leader Dennis Turner suffered a setback this
week as Di Jenkins pulled off a shock win. The night had started so well for
Di as she had earlier gained a 3-0 win over Susan Games before going on to
complete a double, taking the scalp of Dennis. Di was 2-0 up before allowing
Dennis to save face and grab a consolation point. The chasing pack all slightly closed the gap on the
leader as a result of this with Scott Lea picking up maximum points with a
3-0 win over the luckless Susan Games. And Paul Limb also gained a 3-0 win
over Carla Slade. But it looks to have come too late for Paul this season. The focus was then on James Harmer (fourth), but he made
hard work of beating Tracey Richardson. Trailing 1-0, he scraped home 2-1.
This was also the case for George Harness as leading lady Sharon Butler went
down fighting 2-1. Angie Upsall beat Tina Willicombe 2-1. Despite defeat
Tina was chuffed to get a leg as it gives her as many points at the bottom as
Susan with only leg difference now separating one of them from being the strongest player in
the league. Finally after 137 darts thrown, Louise Charalambou came
back from 1-0 down to beat Adam Kemp who (despite throwing 132 darts himself)
could not hold on to the lead allowing Louise to cross the winning line with
a 2-1 scoreline. Darts news in brief The second staging of the Ann Jenkins memorial mixed
pairs competition takes place at Skegness at the Sun Castle on June 10. This
popular county/local league player lost her fight against cancer and anyone
wishing to take part can do so with an entry fee of £5. This gives players
the chance of taking on defending champions Graham Sharp and Debra Royal.

Round-up
for week ending April 20
Boston
Standard Premier Division
The Friday night individual league programme was once
again hit by the goings on associated with the Old Leake League! Bizarrely, a league that is played around
the pubs and clubs on a Monday night seems to be able to disrupt the fixtures
of others on a Friday night and also on Tuesdays in the Boston and Skegness
area. This resulted in just five games being played in the
Boston Standard Premier Division, including three of the top five
competitors. Here, Colin Hewson got the action under way against Debra Royal.
This game started well for Colin as he opened with a 16-dart leg to go 1-0
up. But the remaining legs were all tight and perhaps Deb would consider
herself to be unlucky as she found herself on the receiving end of a 4-0
defeat as Colin took his chances with a 22.51 average (division’s best) while Deb was unable to take any of hers. It kept the pressure on Ady Parker who toed the oche
next against Trev Day. And this was a similar story as Ady secured a 3-0
lead, leaving Trev to bemoan his missed chances in the opening three legs.
This was until Ady showed some quality to secure the match with the best leg
when hitting a 20-dart leg to leave Trev in his wake back on 207. Thus Ady
moved into second place and ready for a showdown with Colin to look forward
to next week. So with wins secured for two of the top five, the focus
now was on Dave Hasnip next as he faced Bob Mountain. This game swung one way
then the other as Bob held the advantage at 1-0 and 2-1 only to be pegged
back both times. But he did regain the lead for the third time at 3-2, only
to watch helpless as Dave hit a 19-dart leg leaving Bob on 239 to tie it up
again at 3-3. After all the hard work Dave had put in, he looked to be in
control of the decider. But when his chance came the doubles let him down and
he went down 4-3. However both players were soon back at the oche and they
came away with different results. This time Bob found himself outplayed by
Tony Hillyard as the latter hit a 180 in a 4-1 win and Dave was quickly back
to winning ways as he beat the elusive Richard Pearson. who gave up his rod
and reel this week after getting “water-licked.” He decided to turn up only
to get beat by a 4-1 scoreline allowing Dave to join in with a share of
fourth place. Lincs Racing Championship The much-awaited top-of-the-table clash between Darren
Butler and Pete Reid failed to happen as the latter failed to show. The
outcome of this match will now go to the committee room on Friday night. This
allowed “The Baker” Daley Richardson to take over at the top, although it may
only be for just a week. A great run of late has seen Daley rise in to contention
for some serious dough after he picked up a vital three points a 3-0 win over
Redvers Dickinson (third) with a 19.02 average was the icing on the cake! Fellow contender Daniel Martin suffered a big set-back
to his hopes as Dick “Top Pocket” Taylor found the doubles with aplomb to
beat the youngster 3-0. At the other end of the table Ben Carr is still giving
it his best despite the spectre of near-certain relegation. A win was
achieved this week when he gained a 3-2 success at the expense of Rick Woods
who he felled on the doubles. Mick Parker clearly has other things on his mind. He is
now two points adrift of safety after a 3-0 defeat to Redvers Dickinson with
the latter having played more games than those around him he too looks
vulnerable in third place. Pete Johnson must also be looking over his shoulder. Two
costly defeats came for him on the night. They combined to see him lose 3-1
to Pedro Silva and Mick Flynn with Mick coming back from 1-0 down to produce
the division’s best average of 20.61. Finally another one of the top five had a night to forget as Mick Vinters, a front runner for a long way this season, crashed to a 3-2 defeat against Rob Birtwhistle. It’s a result that drops him to a tie of fourth place. | ||||||||
