REPORTS ARCHIVE 2006

Week ending September 17

Riders representing Boston Wheelers Cycling Club were among the prizes on Sunday in the Lincolnshire Road Racing Association’s 50-mile time-trialling championship. The event, organised by Sleaford Wheelers, was held over an area around the host town. It represented a rerun of the event held the previous week when the race had to be stopped due to the road being blocked near one of the roundabouts by a crashed lorry.

This time around, the race attracted a field of almost 60 riders on a morning that brightened up after a cloudy start. Jim Boyle rode in determined fashion to claim the second fastest racer accolade in a time of 1 hour 56 minutes and 57 seconds. Other times: Adam Ellis 2:04.46, Peter Saint 2:05.45, Dave Grayson 2:13.58 (fastest on standard with a plus of 21 minutes). These times also combined to see Boston Wheelers take the overall team title.

Fastest rider in successfully defending the title was Cherry Valley’s Ian Dalton in 1:53.48.

Week ending September 10

Conditions on the morning of Sunday September 10 were ideal for cycle racing with practically no wind. And all riders who took part in the LRRA 30-mile time-trial championship enjoyed the elements. Incorporated in the event, which brought in almost 60 riders, was a race for the North East Midlands Veterans’ TTA and also an open section which attracted eight riders.

In the LRRA race, the 30 mile championship title was taken by Cherry Valley rider Ian Dalton in 1hr 6mins 15secs. Close behind was Jim Boyle of Boston Wheelers in 1.6.49 and taking third spot another Cherry Valley rider Andy Moore with 1.9.41. Cherry Valley also took the team title assisted by Aaron Tuplin in 1.13.22. First handicap award was taken by M Colclough (Sleaford Wheelers) in 1.11.31 actual time and in second place was R Linton (Alford Wheelers).

Other Boston riders did well with their times: Pete Saint 1.12.13, Dave Grayson 1.15.40 (this gave him third spot with a standard time of plus 14.40). Adam Ellis also rode well to a time of 1.11.08. Mik Barker has ridden the 10 league this year and this was his first and last attempt at other distances for the time being, pending an operation needed as a result of a serious accident several years ago. His time was 1.33.57.

Winner of the NEM section was G Lesley of the Pennine CC with 1.12.54. First handicap award went to K Wells (Alford Wheelers) whose actual time was 1.16.30. The standard award was taken by R Hallam, South Pennine CC in 1.16.20, a plus of 27 minutes.

In the open section the fastest rider was E Humphries of the GB fire station/profile racing team in 1.8.23, handicap award taken by R McCabe of North Notts Olympic in 1.13.37 and C O’Rourke of RAF racing team won the standard prize in 1.11.07 which brought him a plus of nine minutes. The fastest lady rider was Felicity Hart of Sleaford Wheelers with 1.14.40.

The Wheelers and organiser Jack Mitchell thanked other club members for all their help at various points. Thanks also went to Lincoln Wheelers and Alford Wheelers for help in marshalling and to Ashcroft Fabrics.

Week ending September 3

On Saturday evening (September 2) the weather was really against cyclists. Three Boston Wheelers entered for the North Notts Olympic 10-mil time-trial along the A1 in the Long Benington area. Gale force winds made almost half of the 90 entries think twice about venturing out, so there were many gaps in the field. Those who rode had a good ride to the turn, but times for the return leg were slower than usual. Jim Boyle finished in fifth place with 22.27, Pete Saint recorded 25.08 and Dave Grayson’s time was 24.55. But there was no slowing down for the winner Kevin Dawson in 20.41.

This Sunday (September 10), the Wheelers are hosting the LRRA 30-mile TT championship and race headquarters are at Ashcroft Fabrics.
