REPORTS ARCHIVE 2005-2006

Week ending March 26:

There were good results from Boston Wheelers racing cyclists who rode in Spalding CCs 27-mile hilly time-trial. Held on Sunday morning in fine weather — although still quite windy — the course was based around Edenham and Bourne and brought in a field of 45 riders. Jim Boyle was fastest rider in group A with a time of 1.2.43 while Adam Ellis improved by six minutes on his time last year and was fastest in group B with 1.3.59. Pete Saint’s time of 1.5.07 ensured the fastest team time for the Wheelers. Dave Grayson, improving by two minutes, came home in a.8.41 and Tim Smith got well into time trialling with a 1.11.47. James Harness was fastest in group D with a 1.8.54. Winner of the race was Andy Proffitt of Artic Shorter Rochford RT in 59.13.

Members of the Wheelers were saddened to learn of the death of Nev Crane of Sleaford Wheelers.

In his younger days Nev rode well for the Wheelers and represented England in several road race events at home and abroad. He was a lively person with a huge interest in cycling and will be a great loss to those who knew him.

Week ending March 19:

Boston Wheelers had 35 teams of two riders for their open two-up 25-mile time-trial on Sunday morning.

Starting just along the seven mile straight, they rode south and turned onto the road to Sibsey before turning left up to Keal Hill for another left turn to Revesby. There they then rode along the straight again to finish not far from race headquarters at Ashcroft Fabrics. Riders faced the hardest stretch against the wind on the first few miles into Sibsey.

Fastest team was Paul Russell and Paul Ashby of the Fat Birds CC with 54.49.Taking second place — for a chance — was Ian Dalton and John Surtees of Cherry Valley RT in 54.52. Third fastest were Chris Hurd and John Greed (VC Lincoln) in 57.47. And the final pair among award winners for fastest times were Michael Wills and Phil Harris of Hinckley CRC with 58.08.

Other teams riding under the hour were Pete Saint and Jim Boyle (Boston Wheelers) with 58.46 and L Leadbetter and P Ackerman of Fenland Clarion with 59.07. Fastest composite team were Duncan Puttman of Hull Thursday RC and Adam Hardy, Wolds RT in 59.58. Male/female team winners were Z Dhaiyi and Mrs A Lilley riding for Fenland Clarion and Peterborough RC with 1.11.13.

Wheelers riders Dave Grayson and Adam Ellis rode well for 1.00.59 while Tim Smith had to ride solo for a lonesome ride for a 1.7.33. Tony Ladds of the Wheelers partnered young Yello Velo rider Thomas Garwell to a 1.23.56. Organiser Jack Mitchell thanked everyone who helped and the young boys who looked after the numbers. Thanks also went to Ashcroft Fabrics for use of car park and other facilities.

Week ending March 12:

Five racing members of Boston Wheelers took part on Sunday morning in Bourne Wheelers Open 22-mile hilly time-trial. Based around the hilly area of Essendine, the race was cut short because of roadworks and so one lap was ridden instead of two, bringing the distance down to 11 miles.

Although it was another bitterly cold morning, the Wheelers had good results with second, third and fourth placings bringing them the team award. Of the 39 entries, the fastest time of 27mins 43secs was done by Ian Dalton of Cherry Valley RT. Taking second place and fastest in category A with 29.21 was Boston Wheeler Pete Saint, followed by club-mate Jim Boyle in third place with 29.34. Third Wheeler home in fourth place to clinch the team prize and fastest in category B was Adam Ellis in 29.44. Wheelers’ back-up rider Dave Grayson finished in the top 10 with 31.03 and a hard ride to complete the course in 33.06 was Tim Smith.

This Sunday the club holds its open two-up 25-mile time-trial beginning at Frithville and on to Sibsey, East Keal and Revesby before finishing along the straight just before Ashcroft Fabrics, the race headquarters.

Week ending March 5:

Boston Wheelers held their annual early season 18-mile hilly time-trial on Sunday morning when 18 riders from various clubs turned up to take part. The race was — and still is — mainly a club event and awards are given on handicapped times. But over the last few years it has also been a popular race with other clubs’ riders.

It was another cold morning with an icy wind on many open stretches and although glad to have taken part, all competitors were please to reach the finish. The course began at Mareham-le-Fen, through Revesby with a ride up the hill to south of Horncastle where they turned sharp left through to Haltham, left at Swan Neck corner and on to the finish at the top of the hill at Revesby.

In the awards section, taking fastest handicap time was David Kemp with 49.48 (actual 57.18). In second place was scratch rider Dave Grayson in 51-24 and next was Tim Smith 53.40 (actual 55-34). Enjoying an early race in the year after major surges last year was Ken Syrett in 57.10 (actual 1.00.04).

Other times from various clubs were: S Blackbourn 56.42, R Forman 55.42, T Garwell 1.2.55, K Wells 51.08, J Ashworth 54.12, P Griffiths 47.27, D Tuplin 56.04, a Tuplin 49.50, P Rymer 50.13, I Harrison 1.07.04, M White 51.36, C Lamb 46.43, D Waters 1.11.42. Fastest rider of all was Ian Dalton of Cherry Valley RT with 43.28.

Thanks went to timekeepers, tea ladies and all marshals who stood out in the cold to see riders safely through. Next event is the Wheelers’ open two-up 25-mile time-trial on March 19.
