Week ending June 25

There were more good results from Boston Wheelers racing team on Sunday morning when seven riders of the club entered the Spalding Wheelers Open 25-mile time-trial.

Almost 60 riders turned out to ride on what was a quite blustery morning and Jim Boyle of the Wheelers made the winning time of 54.36. Pete Saint’s time of 57.44 and Adam Ellis’s 58.07 ensured that the Boston boys were again the winning team. Dave Grayson’s 1.2.54 and Tim Smith’s 1.3.52 gave them good support and young Pippa Saint found it a hard ‘25’ but still did 1.25.47. Pete’s time also brought him the award for fastest in group A and Adam took fastest in group B.

For the latest race in the Thursday evening 10-mile league the wind again was strong on several stretches of the course and this was reflected in slower times all round. Tony Ladds and Rick Tawn tiding tandem were unlucky enough to puncture just before the last three miles that was the best bit wind wise. Results: Peter Flint 27.52, Julian Cummings 27.39, Pete Saint 25.05, Tim Smith 25.26 and Dave Grayson 25.50.

Week ending June 18

Boston Wheelers racing team have been active over the last couple of weeks with several events in the area. Last Tuesday evening they were in action for their inter-club event.

The inter-club 25-mile time-trial race was begun in 1948 between Heckington and District CC and Boston Cycling and Athletic Club at a time when grasstrack racing was very popular with the two clubs. Eventually Heckington and District became Sleaford Wheelers and the two clubs (Boston and Sleaford) were joined in the event by Spalding CC.

And this year for the first time they were joined by Yello Velo. The fastest three riders from each club determined the fastest team time for the host to hold the shield for the year. Boston Wheelers last held the shield in 1989, so were well due for another win.

Each club had entered either nine or 10 riders so interest on the outcome was high. However, Boston Wheelers had the three fastest riders overall which sealed the trophy for them. Fastest ride was done by Jim Boyle (55.24). In second place was Pete Saint (57.29) and third place went to Adam Ellis with 59.20.

The club had some good back-up riders with Dave Grayson taking fastest veteran award with 1.02.07 and Tim Smith bringing in a personal best by 2mins for a 1.02.33. Pete Flint’s time was 1.10.50 and James Harness’ time was 1.05.40. A good time came for Pippa Saint when she knocked off 5 minutes from her first “25” the previous week by coming home with 1.17.16 and this gave her first handicap.

On Thursday evening the 10-mile league times were: Mik Barker (25.57), Pippa Saint at last getting inside evens (20mph) did 29.13. Tandem riders Tony Ladds and Richard Tawn changed places after last week and saw much improvement when they cam back in 24.44. James Harness shaved 30 seconds off his previous best to record 23.24 and Tim Smith close to his PB did 24.32. Peter Flint’s time was 26.41 and, riding his first race this year, Julian Cummins did 26.38 while Pete Saint’s 22.43 was fastest. Private trial times were: Adrian Thurston 29.13, Alex Wade 25.45 and Will Hare 25.42.

Dave Grayson was the Wheelers’ only rider on Saturday in With Wheelers’ 10-mile time-trial held on the A1 around the Long Benington area. From a field of 106 riders. The fastest rider was J Perkins of Zenith RT in 20.02. Dave’s time was 23.23 but he’s a little but off form at the moment.

On Sunday morning, Jim Boyle became the new LRRA 25-mile TT championship when he was fastest of the field with 55.17. The Wheelers also took the team championship with support from Pete Saint (58.21) and Adam Ellis (58.52). The wind was strong against them on the way out but all times from Boston riders were good — Dave Grayson (1.03.30), Tim Smith (1.04.40) and another PB for James Harness when he came back in 1.01.00. Organiser of the LRRA 25, Ian Hall, thanked the many helpers at the event.

Week ending June 11

The evening of Wednesday June 7 saw Boston Wheelers hold their annual open 25-mile time trial on the Donington, Osbournby and Quarrington course. There seemed to be a strong wind at the start that was helpful on the way out and later died away to give some good times. Coming back with a new course record of 53mins 37secs was Ian Dalton of Cherry Valley RT.

In second place was Wheelers rider Jim Boyle in 54.54, this also gave him the club 25-mile championship. Coming in for third place was Pete Saint of Boston Wheeler with 57.06. Dave Grayson of the Wheelers did his usual good time of 1.2.11 and young Pippa Saint, riding her first 25, rode well and came back with 1.22.49. Tim Smith was going well until he lost his chain and after spending what must have seemed ages he resumed his ride but had lost his motivation so had to be satisfied with 1.5.21.

Winner of group B was Mike Ewet (Sanyan Design) in 57.21; Group C, Gary Smith (King’s Lynn CC) with 1.2.10; Group D, Mark Garwell (Yello Velo) 1.7.58; and Group E, Lynn Marris (Brocklesby CC) in 1.13.46.

This coming Sunday the Wheelers are hosting the Lincolnshire Road Riders Association 25-mile championship. The organiser is Jan Hall and he has a good field of 70 riders entered.

Week ending June 4

For the last two races in the Boston Wheelers Thursday evening 10-mile time-trial league, the weather conditions have been favourable for cycle racing.

In week four of the 12 events to count, most points were gained by Tim Smith in 24.29 just getting the better of Dave Grayson’s 24.46. Ian Hall improves weekly, now at 28.42 and Pippa Saint faster each week did 31.34. Other times were: Tony Ladds 27.38, Peter Flint 27.15, A Wade Spalding 26.09. M Wood (private trial) 28.50, A Thurston (pt) 29.43, Will Hare (pt) 26.22, Ian Fensom (pt) 25.45 and A Smith (pt) 27.02.

Week five saw more fast times when Peter Saint was a clear winner in 22.30 while Tim Smith did a personal best with 24.19. Tony Ladds and R Tawn rode tandem for a change and came back in 29.07, for some reason not as fast as a solo rider. Ian Hall has knocked three minutes off his first week’s ride and went round the course in 27.38. Pippa Saint, still improving did 31.33. Other times were on private trials bases for:  A Wade 26.57, W Hare 26.30, Jan Fensom (racing this year after a 10-year lay-off) 25.29, A Thurston 29.55, M Robinson 27.03 and Simon Hare 26.17.
