REPORTS ARCHIVE 2006

Week ending July 30

In the concluding event of the Boston Wheelers’ Thursday evening 10-mile league, the times recorded by some riders were not as fast as had been anticipated. After an early shower, the air had cleared and so had road surfaces.

But it was a struggle for the last three miles with a strong and humid wind. The three fastest riders finished with only eight seconds between them — Pete Saint (24.29), Dave Grayson (24.24) and, just pipping them, Tim Smith (24.21). Other times were: Mik Barker (29.40), a little slower than usual was Peter Flint (27.12), Tony Ladds and Rick Tawn riding tandem (25.23) and a private trial from young Will Hare (26.30).

Week ending July 23

For the penultimate race in the Boston Wheelers’ Thursday evening 10-mile time-trial league, the weather was good and most riders were satisfied with their times.

First away was Mik Barker with 28.25 and Ken Slaney’s time was 32.05. James Harness rode very well to return with 22.58. Ian Hall’s time was 28.14 and Peter Flint’s time of 26.01 was his best this year. Peter Saint couldn’t quite get under 22 minutes for his fastest in the league this year. Never far apart with their times at this distance were Dave Grayson 24.15 and Tim Smith 24.11. Pippa Saint, in her first year of time trialling, was just a few seconds away from her personal best and was the winner of the Arthur Rayner Trophy in 29.37. With one more ride in the league to count there will be two extra ‘fun’ rides but still the full 10 miles distance.

Week ending July 16

Three riders from the Boston Wheelers rode over to the Witham Wheelers Open 25-mile time trial. The event, on the A1, started at Long Benington and turned at Carlton on Trent. A total of 120 riders went to the start line and rode the well-known course in quite windy conditions.

Jim Boyle took second place with a personal best time of 53 minutes and 42 seconds. Pete Saint did well with a time of 55-42 and Dave Grayson’s time was 62.54. Winner of the event was Gary Empson (API Metro) with a time of 52.57.

Week 10 of the Thursday evening 10-mile league turned out to be another windy ride for all concerned with no personal best times recorded. Those finishing were: Pippa Saint (31.54), Mik Barker (30.07), Tim Smith (24,37), Adrian Thurston (prive trial, 29.40), Pete Saint (23.36). In addition, Rick Tawn and Tony Ladds achieved a time of 25.40 on their tandem.

On Sunday July 16, several riders and friends gathered for the Wheelers’ annual leisure ride. The entrants covered 36 miles with a stop at Birchgrove Garden Centre for hot food. They all returned home by 2.30pm.

Week ending July 9

On Sunday morning three riders from Boston Wheelers Cycling Club rode in the Yorkshire Cycling Federation 100 mile time trial. And because of a shortage of races at this distance in Lincolnshire, the event was used for the LRRA championship.

The race was run on circuits around Boroughbridge, Thirsk and Northallerton mainly along the A19 and was well signposted and marshalled. Although gale force winds and several heavy showers came along the trio weathered the storm well. Dave Grayson, hampered by a slipped chain, covered the 100 miles in 4 hours 47 minutes and 5 seconds for his first race at this distance.

Tim Smith had not ridden for a greater distance than 25 miles so was well pleased with 4.43.33. Pete Saint was last but one to set off from the full field of 120 and was going well but rode the last 18 miles on a soft tyre. His time and a few of the other late starters was in dispute, so no definite time to record at present. However, the Boston team were the winners of the LRRA team championship for the 100 miles.

In the latest Thursday evening 10 mile league things went well and all riders got close to their best times this year — Pippa Saint (29.33), Ken Slaney (32.02), Peter Flint (27.03), Dave Grayson (24.04), Tim Smith (24.25), Julian Cummins (26.36) and Pete  Saint (22.45). Private trial: Will Hare (26.04).

The Wheelers are having their annual leisure ride on Sunday and hope for fine weather and other cyclists to join them. They will leave the post office Wide Bargate at 10am and pick up at the Pincushion Inn, Wyberton about 10 minutes later before turning on to side roads heading for the Quadring and Gosberton areas. A stop will be made for lunch between noon and 1pm and estimate a return to Boston somewhere around 3pm.
