REPORTS ARCHIVE 2005-2006

Week ending February 26:

On the afternoon of March 4 three of Boston Wheelers’ members took part in the Coalville Wheelers Open 25-mile time trial over two circuits of the Griffydam course in Leicestershire. The weather was cold and windy but the beautiful rolling countryside made it all worthwhile. Peter Saint recorded a good time of 1hr 4mins 13secs. Jim Boyle, a new member, came home in 1hr 4mins 41secs and Dave Grayson pedalled ton 1hr 9mins. Winner was J Perkins in 1.00.07.

The first Wheelers club event of 2006 was on Sunday morning — the club reliability trials. One group rode 50 miles in which 10 riders took part starting and finishing at the racing secretary’s home at Frampton.

The course took them onto Ralph’s Lane, Kirton end, Blackjack Road, onto the A52 heading to Billingborough, Dunsby up onto the A15 before making a sharp left turn to Dyke. Then it was on to the Bourne-West Pinchbeck Road, turning right for Spalding, on to Gosberton and back to the start/finish for well-earned refreshments supplied by Beryl and club president Doreen. All riders had their own stories to tell of how hard it was. One rider said it took 24 minutes for his group to do the first 10 miles, the on the Bourne to Twenty road things were slower because of the open country and head wind. Eight riders finished well within the time allowed — Dave Grayson, Tim Smith, Adam Ellis, Pete Saint plus Ian Hall and Yello Velo riders Charlie Porter, Martin White and Mark Garwell.

The 33-mile section took the same route to and through Billingborough and turning onto Hundred Fen, Gosberton and Frampton. All riders rode well but two did not finish. In this group were Tony Ladds, Miki Barker, Felicity Saint, Pippa Saint (14), Lennox Saint (10), Tom Garwell (Yello Velo) plus Wheeler Jim Buckley who started late due to a puncture on the way to the start. He was allowed to ride, and after a long hard chase caught and finished well within his time limit.

Sunday March 5 sees the club hold their first hilly time trial of the season of 18 miles starting at Mareham le Fen on the east side of the village at 10am. Those who wish to ride there should meet at the Post Office in Wide Bargate at 9am. Volunteers to help with marshalling duties are also sought.

Week ending February 12:

Boston Wheelers time trialling team had good results in an early season race at Ely and District hard-riders 25 mile open time trial. On a far from perfect morning with a strong cold wind, the roads at the start and finish were, in places, not much better than farm tracks, just made for tough riding and aptly named hard riders.

Dave Grayson, just recovering from a heavy cold, had the misfortune to slip his chain at one time so was disappointed with his time of 1.11.35 and newcomer James Harness was unlucky with a puncture.

New rider Jim Boyle was the Wheelers fastest with 1.00.51 to take third place, while Pete Saint, the club’s best all-rounder, did 1.02.42 and another new rider Adam Ellis recorded 1.04.07. These times gave the Wheelers the team fastest award by 10 minutes. Winner of the race was e country’s best all-rounder Michael Hutchins with 57.02.

Several club members attended the Lincs Road Riders Association prize presentation to collect awards.

Pete Saint took the first novice and was the LRRA’s best all-rounder taking first place in the 12-hour ride and second in 100-mile time trial championship. Pete, Dave and Tim Smith collected the 30-mile team championship award. Next event in the calendar is the club’s reliability 33 or 50-mile ride on February 26 starting from Jack and Beryl’s at 9am.
