REPORTS ARCHIVE 2006

Week ending August 27

On bank holiday Saturday afternoon (August 26) Jim Boyle was the Boston Wheelers’ only entrant in the Ely CC 10-mile time-trial in Cambridgeshire. The weather was cool but good for cycle racing and from a good field of fast riders Jim took third place with 21mins 42secs. Fastest rider was D Staite in 21.30. Runner-up was Ian Cammish in 21.37.

Week ending August 20

On the morning of Sunday August 20, the Lincs RRA hosted an open 10-mile time-trial north of Lincoln on minor roads alongside the A15. The going on the outward section was fast but hard work on the way back.

Boston Wheelers’ Jim Boyle took fourth place with 21.59. Adam Ellis came in with 23.25 and Dave Grayson, well recovered from his 12-hour ride the previous week, achieved 24.42.Of the 82 riders, Julian Ramsbottom was fastest in 20.46.

Next month sees two important events in the LRRA racing calendar. On September 10, the Wheelers are hosting the LRRA 30 mile TT championship followed the week after by Sleaford Wheelers being in charge of the “50” championship.

Week ending August 13

Two riders from the Boston Wheelers showed strength and determination on Sunday when they rode in the North Midlands Cycling Federation 12 hour time-trial. For Dave Grayson and Tim Smith, it was their first attempt at an event that had them racing from 6am to 6pm.

The event was run on roads further north and with brilliant marshalling, but the rain came down all day, at times some heavy downpours and with a strong wind to combat it took all their determination to carry on.

Dave was ready to call it a day after 100 miles but was encouraged to keep going and carried on to ride 215.47 miles that was well above his standard. Tim was determined to do well at the event, an entirely different attitude to riding flat out in a 10 or 25-mile race. He paced himself well and finished with 218.15 miles in his legs. Only 16 riders had entered for the race and bringing in most miles was Andy Parfitt with 259 miles. Dave and Tim had excellent help and support from Pete and Felicity Saint. Thanks went to both.

The Thursday evening 10-mile league has now finished and for a final get-together several riders turned out again last week.

Rick Tawn and Tony Ladds on tandem rode their fastest time together with 24.33. Pippa Saint has ridden very well throughout the league but this time the wind was strong and she could only manage 33.36 but well inside her first time ride. Mik Barker (29.31), Adrian Thurston (30.42 private trial) and — pairing up together as a team — were Tim Smith and Pete Saint to record (23.50).
