On Saturday April 29 four members of the Boston Wheelers set-up took part in the King’s Lynn 10-mile time trial. The race began by heading north from South Runcton on the A10 and turning just outside King’s Lynn before retracing their steps. The weather was still quite cool and the course had several long hard drags. Jim Boyle’s time was 22.14, Pete Saint 22.55, Adam Ellis
23.09 and Dave Grayson 25.01. A total of 90 riders had entered the event and
fastest rider was Steve Hunt of Icknield RC in 21.05. James Hunt, meanwhile,
rode in the University 10-mile TT at Cambridge and came back with a personal
best of 23.50. |

During the Saturday of Easter bank holiday the Boston
Wheelers’ male racers tackled events in Sleaford and in the Tuxford area. There were more than 50 riders in Sleaford Wheelers’
open 10-mile time-trial contest. Wheeler Jim Boyle took fourth spot in 22
minutes 17 seconds and was faster by exactly a minute than club-mate Adam
Ellis’ time of 23.17. James Harness’ time was 24.00. Tim Smith decided to get
in some extra miles by cycling over to the event from Gosberton, riding the
course in 24.55 before then returning home on his cycle. It was a fine day
with head wind out and fastest on the day was Gary Empson in 21.09. Elsewhere, in the Tuxford area, the race started six
miles down the A1. And on a fast course Pete Saint did well for the time of
year by recording 21.49 followed by Dave Grayson in 23.28. They encounter a
fair side wind both ways. The race was run by the VTTA and attracted 118
riders, almost a full field. Several events are looming up over the next few weeks,
among them the Wheelers’ 10-mile league on the first Thursday in May. |

April 9:
Boston Wheelers’ racing team had more good results on
Sunday morning. They rode in Skegness Wheelers 25-mile time-trial. Starting at
Candlesby, the course took them on the hilly roads with a strong cold wind
until they turned just outside Louth. And from there they had a good ride in
from a back wind.a total of 36 riders had entered and the winner by a clear
four minutes was Wayne Randall of the Planet X team in 56.14. The Wheelers won the team prize. Taking fourth place was
Pete Saint in 1.2.47, Adam Ellis gained second handicap with 1.3.13 and Jim
Boyle after slipping his chain on one of the hills, still did a 1.13.16 and took
his first vet award. Tim Smith’s time of 1.10.18 brought him first handicap
and Dave Grayson was pleased with his 1.8.15 for second veteran’s prize. |

April 2:
The time trialling season is now getting fully into
gear. And at the weekend six riders from Boston Wheelers went over to the
Saxilby roads to take part in the LRRA two-up 25-mile time-trial. It was
again a windy morning for the 22 teams to battle against and only two pairs
managed to get under the hour. Fastest were Ian Dalton and John Surtees of Cherry
Valley RT in 55.44 and runners-up was the Boston team of Jim Boyle and Adam
Ellis in 57.54. Taking fourth place for the Wheelers was Pete Saint and James
Harness in 1.1.37. Dave Grayson and Tim Smith were going well until they took
a wrong road because of unclear marshalling and had gone some way before
realising they were wrong. So that was a wasted journey as well as much
annoyance to the riders. The 10-mile league starts in a few weeks time. And the
Thursday evening-run contest looks like being an interesting championship
this time. |
